Eric Metaxas gained fame in 2009 when he published a deeply flawed biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer that was universally panned by Bonhoeffer scholars. In 2016, he endorsed Donald Trump for president in a much-discussed Wall Street Journal op-ed.
Here are some more of his “greatest” hits. They are listed here in chronological order to reveal his descent into the MAGA-world:
- In June 2016, he published a history of the American founding riddled with historical errors.
- In December 2019, he said that efforts to impeach Donald Trump for a second time were “demonic”
- In August 2020, he claimed Jesus was white.
- In August 2020, he sucker-punched an anti-Trump protestor outside the Republican National Convention in Washington D.C.
- In October 2020, he wrote about Trump: “Is there anyone unto him.”
- In November 2020, Metaxas compared his fight against “voter fraud” in the 2020 presidential election to the courage one needs to stop a heavily-armed man who is trying to murder his child.
- In December 2020, the late Michael Gerson, playing on evangelical conversion language, said that Metaxas had “publicly committed his life to Donald Trump”
- In December 2020, he said that “God acts in history” and has acted on the side of Donald Trump.
- In December 2020, he wondered why so many people were talking about COVID when “election fraud” was the new September 11th.
- In January 2021, he blamed the insurrection on the U.S. Capitol on Antifa and compared liberals to Nazi’s who used the Reichstag fire to gain political power.
- In June 2021, he said that those who will not defend the January 6th insurrectionists are “dead to him.”
- In July 2021, he told his followers to “be a rebel” and refuse to get the COVID-19 vaccine. He also told his followers to “get a gun” to stop the government from gathering vaccination data.
- In August 2021 (and on many other occasions), he defended the views of conspiracy theorist Mike Lindell.
- In October 2021, he asked his followers to vote for him for Culture Warrior of the Year.
- In February 2022, he used his radio show to push pro-Putin propaganda.
- In March 2022, he and Charlie Kirk floated the idea that the coronavirus came from “Ukrainian biolabs.”
- In September 2022, he said that “the evangelical church is enabling Hitler”
- In October 2022, he called evangelical megachurch pastors Rick Warren, Tim Keller, and Andy Stanley “Hitler’s favorite kind of pastors.”
- In November 2022, he said that Christian Right Pennsylvania gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano would win the election “by divine appointment” and will be a “miracle.” (Mastriano lost in a landslide.)
- In September 2023, he said that Mike Pence was not a good Christian because he chose to certify the 2020 presidential election.
- In March 2024, he described Joe Biden’s State of the Union address as “satanic” and described the president as a “puppet of the devil”
- In February 2024, he suggested that Joe Biden was a murderer.
- In May 2024, he compared Donald Trump’s conviction in the New York hush money case to a “lynching.”
I think you get the idea.
Here is Metaxas’s latest:
What a truly strange dude he is.
He is so far in left field as to be out of the park. Christians need to stop reading his books and listening to him.
Nothing that MAGA does surprises me anymore
Metaxas seems to be the primary influence on Republican voters in my congregation. Astounding.
Metaxis should learn from RFK Jr’s experience and have the brain worm removed immediately.
