Can the Democrats hold the Senate?
Yes. And it looks like they will. Last night the major networks called the Arizona senate race for Mark Kelly. At this moment, the Democrats and the Republicans each hold 49 seats in the U.S. Senate. Two seats have yet to be decided. In Nevada, Republican Adam Laxalt is leading incumbent Democratic senator Catherine Cortez Masto by about 800 votes. But Nevada officials are still counting votes in Clark County (Las Vegas) and Cortez Masto is outpacing Laxalt there. A … [Read more...] about Can the Democrats hold the Senate?
“I think we have yet to find the limits, or the bottom, of who and what White evangelicals might justify in their allegiance to Trump and the Republican Party.”
The quote in the title is from Robert P. Jones, CEO of Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) and the author of White Too Long: The Legacy of White Supremacy in American Christianity. It comes from an interview with Jennifer Rubin of The Washington Post. Here is a taste: What accounts for White Christian evangelicals’ acceptance of Republicans’ increasingly unabashed expressions of bigotry? White evangelicalism, with its strong emphasis on personal salvation, has … [Read more...] about “I think we have yet to find the limits, or the bottom, of who and what White evangelicals might justify in their allegiance to Trump and the Republican Party.”
Wehner: Herschel Walker is a “perfect candidate for a fallen party”
Here is Peter Wehner at The Atlantic on the GOP candidate for the U.S. Senate from Georgia: There have been plenty of awful candidates in American political history; what sets Herschel Walker apart is that he’s a wreck in so many different ways. Walker, the Republican Senate nominee in Georgia trying to unseat Democrat Raphael Warnock, is a compulsive liar, so much so that he falsely claimed he has not made false claims about graduating from the University of Georgia. … [Read more...] about Wehner: Herschel Walker is a “perfect candidate for a fallen party”
The Christian Right rallies around Herschel Walker

Journalists who showed up at the church Tuesday (Oct. 4) were told by church staffers they had to leave. You don’t congratulate someone who just robbed a bank (and other court evangelical news)
Yesterday Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell finally acknowledged that Joe Biden was the "President-elect of the United States of America. He also warned GOP senators to stop contesting the election. Meanwhile, House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy has not said a word. Trump continues to raise millions on his election fraud claims through his Trump Make America Great Again Committee. 75% of the money he raises can be used for his own political activity, including … [Read more...] about You don’t congratulate someone who just robbed a bank (and other court evangelical news)
Monday in Trumpland
It was a rough start to the week for the president. White House adviser Kellyanne Conway, a Trump loyalist who is one of the few staff members who has not left the administration, announced that she is leaving her position. The resignation comes after Conway's teenage daughter blasted her mother on Twitter and claimed that she was seeking emancipation from Kelly and her husband, GOP anti-Trumper George Conway. This is yet another tragic story of how Trumpism has negatively … [Read more...] about Monday in Trumpland
