Are we supposed to assume that the Gospel and Marxism are the same or at least similar? After all, the class of political leaders of Marxist regimes lived quite well, so they became like the rich that Marxism was supposed to bring down. Of course, Marx himself was a racist, odious human being and a freeloader, always asking wealthy people for money.
I remember when your hero Jim Wallis in 1979 excoriated people escaping from Vietnam in rickety boats, many of them perishing at sea, being robbed and raped by pirates, and then living in squalid conditions in refugee camps for years. How DARE they leave a Marxist country! He wrote in Sojourners, “Many of today’s refugees were inoculated with a taste for a Western lifestyle during the war years and are fleeing to support their consumer habit in other lands.” Amazing. They would be willing to forfeit their lives in order to shop at Walmart.
To be honest, I find it difficult to understand how confessing Christians can so admire the communist totalitarian states (we are down to Cuba and North Korea) because you believe that the welfare states they had were such paragons of morality that they canceled out all of the atrocities their leaders committed while in power.
