Election Day was 5 days ago. What are evangelicals saying?

John Fea   |  November 10, 2024

The court evangelicals 2.0 preparing for January 20, 2025

It seems like there are two kinds of Trump evangelical voters. Those who voted for Trump as the “lesser evil” and those who saw Trump as the candidate that God favored. Blogger Samuel Sey seems to fall in the former group:

“…there is a major difference between MAGA voters who support Trump’s evil words about abortion and IVF and Christians who are grateful for God’s small mercies in Trump.

Christians can celebrate the victory of the lesser evil without rejoicing in evil. In other words, Christians like me are celebrating the lesser evil’s victory because it means God has restrained the greater evil.

Christians should be grateful when God restrains radical abortion policies. Christians should rejoice when God ordains Donald Trump over Kamala Harris.

Some Christians say Donald Trump is like King David. But that’s an insult to the man the Bible calls a “man after God’s own heart (1 Samuel 13:14).” Donald Trump isn’t like King David. He’s more like Cyrus the Great, an ungodly ruler God used to restrain evil.

Jim Daly, the president of Focus on the Family, is “encouraged” by the Trump victory. Here is his statement:

“Focus on the Family is encouraged by Tuesday’s election results – a decisive electoral and popular vote triumph for President-elect Donald Trump – but not because of any partisan cheerleading.

“Instead, the outcome confirms American families are hungry to live in a nation where they can raise their children in an environment that is physically safe, economically viable, and where moms and dads and kids can unapologetically worship God. They believe parents – not politicians – have the authority to guide and direct their children’s education. They believe their daughters shouldn’t have to fear boys in their locker room – or face off against them in a woman’s sporting event. They’re fed up with politicians making common sense complex in an effort to confuse and advance an anti-family agenda.

“Scripture commands Christians to pray for ‘all those in authority that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness’ (1 Timothy 2:2), and so we must lift up the former and future president, as well as President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris – and all those who are guiding and leading our nation.

“The 10 state abortion initiative results reflect divided and uneven sentiment regarding the sanctity of life in America. We celebrate pro-life wins in Florida, South Dakota and Nebraska. Special thanks and congratulations to Governor Ron DeSantis who boldly, courageously and successfully campaigned to defeat the Florida abortion initiative. He demonstrated strong and confident leadership in the face of angry and well-funded opposition. Governor DeSantis modeled the way to advocate for a principled position by leaning into the issue and not slinking away from it.

“Governors who embraced the fight for life delivered victories for children and their mothers. Those who hid from the issue saw defeat.

“In Florida, babies will now live as abortion remains illegal after a heartbeat can be detected.

“The tragic passage of abortion laws in seven other states reflects the important work we have in the pro-life movement to make abortion unthinkable. We now press ahead to persuade more people in every state that it’s a baby in the womb deserving of love and protection!

“As the apostle Paul commanded, “Let us not grow weary in well-doing.”

James Robison believes that the election of Donald Trump is setting the stage for the “greatest awakening in history”:

Samuel Rodriguez, president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, tries to explain why Latinos supported Donald Trump:

1. Rejection of progressive ideologies: Many Latino voters expressed disapproval of Critical Race Theory (CRT), Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, and wokeism, viewing them as divisive and misaligned with their cultural values.

2. Opposition to socialism and Marxism: Having personal or familial experiences with socialist regimes, particularly among Cuban and Venezuelan communities, many Latinos are wary of policies they perceive as leaning towards socialism.

3. Stance on cultural issues: The community showed resistance to policies allowing biological men in women’s sports and opposed late-term abortions, aligning more closely with conservative viewpoints.

4. Economic concerns: The handling of the economy, including inflation and job security, was a significant factor. Trump’s economic policies resonated with many Latinos seeking stability and growth.

5. Immigration policies: While immigration is a nuanced issue within the Latino community, there is a growing sentiment against open-border policies and the provision of resources to illegal immigrants at the perceived expense of American citizens.

6. Government overreach: Concerns about big government and intrusion into personal lives, especially regarding parental rights in children’s upbringing, influenced the shift towards a candidate advocating for limited government.

7. Commitment to Israel: A strong commitment to Israel, especially among Hispanic Christians, also played a role. Many Hispanic Christians view support for Israel as a key moral and spiritual issue, aligning with Trump’s clear stance on U.S.-Israel relations.

Owen Strachan believes it’s “morning again in America.” It looks like he is sleeping better as well. Here is a taste of his piece at James Dobson’s website:

The days of our nation suffering the ravages of another leftist administration are now past. The Democratic platform was essentially everything God hates—championing unlimited abortion, open borders, and “gender-affirming care.” Whether our homeland as we know it would have survived the enactment of that agenda is questionable.

But God appointed a different outcome. Once again, He has shown incredible kindness to us. America is not finished.

Our nation has survived a nightmare. In this fall of 2024, The Land of the Free mirrors Britain in the summer of 1945. The UK won World War II alongside the Allies, but the cost of that war forever marked all who survived. So, too, are we scarred by the events of our country’s last ten years—particularly the recent five.

Lockdowns harmed us, woke voices accused us, and sexual paganism in schools and our culture soiled us. Added to the deviant developments, we lived with the menacing specter of eight more years of leftist rule.

If we are honest, the bundle of evils came with a cost. We struggled to sleep, and we prayed with our spouses as we battled against anxiety, doubt, and discouragement. But those challenges are now past.

In God’s providence, America has been given another chance. We have great cause for thanksgiving, prayer, and faith-fueled action in the days ahead. We must not grow weary in well-doing (Galatians 6:9). We must push on and continue our work for the good of our country and the cause of the gospel.

Take a deep breath, Christian. Much labor is ahead of us, but this is a time to celebrate.

It’s morning again in America!

Greg Laurie believes that the election of Donald Trump will bring about a new “Jesus Revolution”:

America has spoken. This past election wasn’t just about politics; it was about values and the soul of our nation. President Trump didn’t just secure the electoral vote—he won the popular vote as well, reflecting a deep desire for change across our country. People are tired of hearing that our values are outdated, that our men are backward or our women are weak. They’re tired of being told that it’s acceptable to undermine our young and innocent—from our unborn children to our daughters in sports and privacy. We’re watching as criminals roam freely while law-abiding citizens are left vulnerable. And friends, it’s not just about the laws or policies; it’s about the heart of our nation. We don’t want bigger government dictating every corner of our lives. We want the freedom to speak truth boldly, to share the gospel and to live as Christians without compromise. This is a pivotal moment for our nation. It’s time for America to turn back to God, to turn back to the Bible. If we want to see true and lasting change, we need a spiritual awakening—a revival that sweeps through our land. Let’s pray for another Jesus Revolution in America!

Daystar TV, a Christian network, flew several of its talent to Trump’s victory party. The groups included Jonathan Weiss, Lorenzo Sewall, Doug Brown, Rachel Lamb Brown, Rachel Knight, and Joni Lamb, Over at The Roys Report, Bruce Bowen wonders if this is an IRS violation:

Christian television network Daystar TV spent an estimated $38,000 this week to fly executives to Donald Trump’s victory party on Daystar’s private jet, raising questions about the ministry’s compliance with applicable laws.

The U.S. tax code prohibits churches and religious nonprofits from supporting political candidates or any political campaign activity, since the so-called Johnson Amendment was enacted in 1954. It’s uncertain who paid for Daystar’s trip, and whether it was considered a ministry expense or a personal one.

Also present at this event were Paula White-Cain and Sean Feucht. People also flew into the party on a plane owned by Liberty University at an estimated cost of $7,115.

A debate over whether David French lives rent-free in the heads of MAGA evangelicals:

Honest question: wasn’t David French’s main argument that folks should vote for Kamala Harris to punish Donald Trump? To ensure the Republican Party didn’t continue along the path he set?

— Eric Teetsel (@EricTeetsel) November 9, 2024

True on the ballot point, obviously, but the rest sounds awful similar (“voting to deliver a defeat to a movement that had abandoned its core principles and core constituency”).

— Eric Teetsel (@EricTeetsel) November 9, 2024

Nah, I think French and Trump are both avatars of a school of thought/cultural posture. Actually, that’s more true of French than Trump (French is in the minority of elites who understand Trump to represent a broader threat to their status, most voters just like him or don’t).

Justin Giboney on elitism:

This is how elitism works. They draw bizarre conclusions that don’t have to be explained and can’t be contested. We must agree or get called names.
