“Evangelicals for Harris” releases an ad. Is this a pro-Harris or anti-Trump movement?

John Fea   |  August 15, 2024

The group “Evangelicals for Harris” just released its first political ad. The ad makes me wonder: Is “Evangelicals for Harris” a pro-Harris political movement or an anti-Trump movement.?

Watch the ad:

Franklin Graham is not happy with the use of his father, Billy Graham, in the ad.

Others are unhappy with the whole concept of “Evangelicals for Harris.”

I went over to the “Evangelicals and Harris” website. Under the “On the Issues” tab, the site does a nice job comparing Trump’s policies and record with the Harris-Biden record. But I am still left wondering: How is “Evangelicals for Harris” any different from any other pro-Harris website? It says that “Biden-Harris delivers” on economic growth, jobs, manufacturing, healthcare, infrastructure, the pandemic, and creation care, but there is nothing about why these matters should be of concern to evangelical voters. The issue of abortion and gender identity, which are two of the main reasons conservative evangelicals won’t vote for Harris, are not even addressed on the website.

There are a lot of reasons why evangelicals should not vote for Trump. There a lot of reasons to criticize MAGA evangelicals. But why should evangelicals be for Harris? The title of the movement–“Evangelicals for Harris”– implies full-throated evangelical support for the vice-president. But so far I haven’t seen that case made. At this point it appears that “Evangelicals for Harris” is really just an “Evangelicals Against Trump.” movement.

I haven’t been able to find the “Evangelicals for Harris” ZOOM call that was held last night. Perhaps the content from that call will prove me wrong. But most of the “Evangelicals for Harris” X feed seems heavily devoted to anti-Trump tweets, with the exception of some vague references to “loving your neighbor” and “compassion” that are not connected in specific ways to Harris-Walz policy proposals.

Here are some tweets. Feel free to go to the “Evangelicals for Harris” X feed and see if I am being overly selective in my choice of tweets to post here. I don’t think I am.

Judgement ultimately comes from God but the problem is that Mr. Trump claims to be not only devout but a rightful judge of Christian values when it comes to the actions of others.

Why would any Christian accept this when Mr. Trump completely lacks humility before God?

We know this verse gets thrown around a lot so we’re careful but Jesus said clearly you cannot serve two masters. God can’t be first if America is first.

I implore you to listen to what our speakers actually said last night. We’re not voting for Harris because we think she’s… https://t.co/qXfRPRMEAH

Brother, please abandon your worship of Trump and come back to the tender embrace of Jesus.

Worshipping Trump won’t fulfill that longing you’re feeling — only Jesus can. Harris might have our vote but only Jesus has our loyalty. Come back home to, Jesus. We can’t wait to throw… https://t.co/Xr7EdcCp1K

“Respect”:

"For me, it's not a hard decision. I will eagerly support Vice President Harris and Tim Walls because I believe that even where we disagree there is respect." – Adam Kinzinger (@AdamKinzinger)

A great moment from our zoom call to support #harriswalz2024.

We would love for you…

Shane is going to vote for love and against Trump:

Let's be the conscience right now. And for me [that] means I'm gonna vote against Donald Trump. I'm gonna vote against hatred. I'm gonna vote against fear, and I'm gonna vote for love, and I'll do it with Jesus in my heart and mercy on my lips." – Shane Claiborne…

“not voting against Trump”:

So … it bears repeating that we do not worship political leaders. Trump is not God. Harris is not God. No political party is God.

God is God. We worship Jesus. Thus, not voting for Trump is not a rejection of the faith, but a rejection of Trump. That’s it. Happy to keep… https://t.co/9hUj7ZEJYH

— Evangelicals For Harris (@Evangels4Harris) August 15, 2024

The issue, Franklin, is that in your worship of Trump you have forsaken the Gospel.

We are voting for Harris but we only worship Jesus. Remember the calling to which you were called. You know the Lord’s grace is always ready to receive you. https://t.co/MpPz5OmKCg

“A vote against another 4 years…”:

"Voting Kamala for me is so much greater than policies. It's a vote against another 4 years of faith leaders justifying the actions of a man who destroys the message Jesus came to spread, and that is why I get involved in politics." – Jerushah Duford (@jerushahruth)

It’s not too…

Is this “pro-Harris?”:

You must've missed the call then, because the love our speakers poured out for this country, for the people that make this great nation, was so evident. The evangelical church loves America, and tonight's call was evidence of the devotion the church has to God first and foremost,… https://t.co/2TRT7fq7p2

“Why does Mr. Trump not feel the same?”:

The believer who loves Christ our Lord would read His words and walk away knowing that our Savior is devoted to helping the poor, the unhoused, the hungry, the infirm, and the soul fleeing violence and persecution.

Why does Mr. Trump not feel the same?

— Evangelicals For Harris (@Evangels4Harris) August 14, 2024

“Mr. Trump…does not”:

Christ teaches us to love all, care for the poor, house the unhoused, feed the hungry, welcome refugees, and embrace the most vulnerable among us.

Mr. Trump… does not. The choice is pretty clear.

— Evangelicals For Harris (@Evangels4Harris) August 13, 2024

He seems pretty angry, Brother. We're about love and spreading Christ's teachings. We believe Mr. Trump is exactly the opposite of that. We're gonna do the work to elect Kamala Harris, and we hope your day is filled with peace.#Evangelicals4Harris https://t.co/j22yewYbZh

Big fan of this quote from John Adams:

“The whole people must take upon themselves the education of the whole and must be willing to bear the expense of it.”

“Does Mr. Trump follow this? He does not.”:

"And Jesus replied: 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'"

Matthew 22:37-39

Does Mr. Trump follow this? He does not.

— Evangelicals For Harris (@Evangels4Harris) August 13, 2024

Brother, where in Christ's teachings is it godly for a leader to brag about disrespecting women and mocking those who are different?

We have grave doubts that Mr. Trump reads Scripture, which is evident in how he so terribly treats others. https://t.co/ky2alPv3Uy

— Evangelicals For Harris (@Evangels4Harris) August 13, 2024

I’ll stop there. I think you get the idea.

Let me be clear. I am not opposed ideologically, politically, or theologically to any of these tweets. My book Believe Me was dedicated to the so-called “19 Percent.” I just want to know more about why evangelicals should be FOR Kamala Harris. I hope “Evangelicals for Harris” will make a specific case that takes us beyond vague references to “love” and “compassion.”

As a graduate of an evangelical seminary and a historian of evangelicalism, I do think there is a case for supporting (vigorously) the Harris candidacy. If we start with the common sense view that neither candidate or party platform will be doctrinally pure, then we can see each through the lens of Jesus’ actual teaching. Who is talking about community and care for neighbor? Who is talking about compassionate welcome for the stranger? Who is speaking in a tone that conveys wisdom and grace and gentleness? This time around, only one candidate fits all of those qualities–things we evangelicals used to refer to as “Christlike.” Leading this diverse nation is hard. Leading it by dividing people and stoking anger is simply antithetical to everything evangelicals (should) hold dear. I am supporting Kamala Harris not only as a way of voting against her opponent, but as a way of publicly affirming the best and most universal of Christian values.

I agree with much of your comment John. But my point is not COULD a case be made for Harris, but rather has “Evangelicals for Harris” MADE the case. Right now it looks more like “Evangelicals Against Trump.” I was actually hoping to learn something from this group–something to help me make a legitimate case FOR Harris. Right now it just seems like warmed over progressivism. Let’s hear about why evangelicals should rally around Harris and Walz’s policies.
