Paul Thompson will be hosting a panel on secondary education. Panelists include Prisca Bird (The Bear Creek School), Rob Sorenson (The Bear Creek School), David McFarland (Pacific Academy), Zachary Cote (Executive Director, Thinking Nation).

Moderator Bio | Paul Thompson

Following a thirteen-year career as a secondary social studies teacher in the New York City suburbs, Dr. Thompson earned his Ph.D. in American History from Emory University. He has been teaching History at North Greenville University since 2006, and since 2019 he has been Dean of Humanities and Sciences. He has been a member of the Executive Board of the CFH since 2018.

Panelist Bios

Prisca Bird teaches Honors Medieval & Renaissance Literature at The Bear Creek School. She holds a Master’s in History from Baylor University. She tweets at @PriscaBird.

Zach Coates serves as the Executive Director of Thinking Nation, a nonprofit that strives to empower secondary students to think historically. He tweets @zacharyfcote.

VerĂłnica A. GutiĂ©rrez (Ph.D., UCLA), is Director of the Great Books Program en español for the Angelicum Academy. A fully online Socractic discussion course for grades 9-12, this first-of-its-kind program launches October 4. GutiĂ©rrez specializes in the origins of Mexican Catholicism and spent 2012-2022 as Azusa Pacific University’s first and only Latin American historian, serving for one year as PI on APU’s institutional NEH-HSI grant and for 6 years as APU’s Director of Undergraduate Research.

David McFarland teaches Social Studies and IB History at Pacific Academy near Vancouver, BC. He holds a Masters in History (McMaster) and is currently completing a graduate certificate at Fuller Seminary. He tweets @MrMcFteaches.

Rob Sorensen (PhD, Faulkner University) is chair of the history department at The Bear Creek School in suburban Seattle, WA, where he teaches European history and coaches speech and debate.  He is the author of Martin Luther and the German Reformation (Anthem Press, 2016), and is an ordained Anglican deacon.

    Many of us have brainstormed and dreamt about how to build a better K-16 bridge. I think this initiative is going to be a great way to get the ball rolling!
