Metaxas: “God has called me to fight to the death for what is true and right”

John Fea   |  September 11, 2022 Leave a Comment

Back in April 2021, I wrote a piece at Current titled, “The Education of an Evangelical Insurrectionist.” It told the story of Tyler Ethridge, a graduate of Charis Bible College who entered the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021 during the insurrection.

This weekend Charis Bible College, which is headed by New Apostolic Reformation culture warrior Andrew Wommack, hosted its annual Truth & Liberty Coalition Conference. Speakers included U.S. Congresswoman Lauren Boebert, “prophets” Mario Murillo and Lance Wallnau, and Christian nationalist “historians” Bill Federer and David Barton.

Another speaker was author and radio host Eric Metaxas. I got a chance to listen to his Saturday afternoon talk at the event and did a little live tweeting:

Eric Metaxas is speaking right now at the Truth and Liberty Coalition Conference in Colorado. The conference is sponsored by Andrew Wommack of Charis Bible College, the school that trained a January 6 insurrectionists. https://t.co/O2GnJXBvy9 #metaxas

Other speakers include Lauren Boebert, David Barton, Lance Wallnau, William Federer, and Mario Murillo–a mix of Christian nationalists and New Apostolic Reformation "prophets." Watch: https://t.co/TQ0cJ2o5xz

The sad part of Metaxas's speech here is that he suggests that an evangelical conversion experience automatically leads to a Christian Right-Trumpian brand of politics and a culture war mentality. https://t.co/TQ0cJ2o5xz

Metaxas is now starting to talk about his book *If You Can Keep It*. It is a deeply problematic book: https://t.co/csItfNqFJr https://t.co/TQ0cJ2o5xz

Metaxas praises Christian nationalist "historians" David Barton and David Federer and says that the homeschoolers who read and imbibe their work will soon "take over the world": https://t.co/TQ0cJ2o5xz

— John Fea (@JohnFea1) September 10, 2022

Eric Metaxas, the man who continues to embrace the Big Lie about the 2020 election, is now preaching about "truth." https://t.co/TQ0cJ2nxI1

— John Fea (@JohnFea1) September 10, 2022

Metaxas saying that Christians must "fight" to save America. This is what God is calling evangelicals to do. Suggests that this might require voting for a man who has been divorced three times. https://t.co/TQ0cJ2nxI1

— John Fea (@JohnFea1) September 10, 2022

Hard to tell from this talk if Metaxas got saved to a life of following Jesus or a life of fighting the culture war. https://t.co/TQ0cJ2nxI1

— John Fea (@JohnFea1) September 10, 2022

Metaxas sees the world in a Manichean, binary way. There are secular humanist atheists and true believers. https://t.co/TQ0cJ2nxI1

— John Fea (@JohnFea1) September 10, 2022

Metaxas says we must embrace the idea that "all truth is God's truth," but he demonizes Yale and other "elite" institutions. The implication is that truth cannot be found in these places. If all truth is God's truth then why can't truth be found anywhere? https://t.co/TQ0cJ2nxI1

— John Fea (@JohnFea1) September 10, 2022

Metaxas says evangelicals must "be in the culture," not just produce culture for other Christians. This is coming from the guy who publishes w/ Thomas Nelson, has a show on TBN, a radio show on Salem Radio, and speaks in churches & conferences like this: https://t.co/TQ0cJ2nxI1

— John Fea (@JohnFea1) September 10, 2022

Metaxas is now attacking the "Christians in the Republican Party" who refuse to fight. His entire approach to public life is built around gaining political power. https://t.co/TQ0cJ2nxI1

— John Fea (@JohnFea1) September 10, 2022

Metaxas says "God has called me to fight to the death for what is true and right." Here is Metaxas sucker-punching an anti-Trump protester a few years and then fighting him to the death! 😉 https://t.co/ATMoZx2Rxt

— John Fea (@JohnFea1) September 10, 2022

Eric Metaxas: "Christian must take back the culture for God." Uses Wilberforce's fight against the slave trade. In Metaxas's mind Wilberforce's fight vs. slave trade = supporting Trumpism and the Big Lie." https://t.co/TQ0cJ2nxI1

— John Fea (@JohnFea1) September 10, 2022

Metaxas now extolling Donald Trump as a "man of character" who challenged the deep state by moving the American embassy to Jerusalem. https://t.co/TQ0cJ2nxI1

— John Fea (@JohnFea1) September 10, 2022

Metaxas says "RINOs" are working on the side of the devil. https://t.co/TQ0cJ2nxI1

— John Fea (@JohnFea1) September 10, 2022

And he we go–as he is prone to do, Metaxas turns Dietrich Bonhoeffer into an evangelical Trumper. Here is Bonhoeffer on stupidity: https://t.co/XAzYRIUCDP

— John Fea (@JohnFea1) September 10, 2022

Here is a real Bonhoeffer scholar responding to Metaxas: https://t.co/Otzot2ncz8

— John Fea (@JohnFea1) September 10, 2022

It is clear that Metaxas's politics–his belief in the #BigLie, his support of Trump, and his culture warrior mentality comes from he believes he is hearing the voice of God. https://t.co/TQ0cJ2nxI1

— John Fea (@JohnFea1) September 10, 2022

Metaxas says it is the "Lord's will" to take over the Seven Mountains of influence. (They are business, media, education, family, religion, entertainment, and government). Crowd goes wild. https://t.co/TQ0cJ2nxI1

If I have time I will try to check out the Barton and Federer speeches since these interest me the most as an American historian. The writings of Barton, as I argue in the piece I linked to above, was an influential part of Tyler Ethridge’s training. In fact, the school of politics at Charis Bible College was once called the “David Barton School of Government.”

For more on Charis Bible College check out:

“An Open Letter to the Students of Charis Bible College“

“It appears we have a direct connection between Seven Mountain Dominionism and the insurrection on the U.S. Capitol.“
