In search of a good 5th-grade American history textbook

John Fea   |  August 29, 2022

A reader who teaches 5th grade American history at an evangelical elementary school is looking for a good textbook. This person is currently using a textbook published by a Christian conservative publishing house that is steeped in providential history and American exceptionalism. This teacher is wondering if there are any 5th-grade American history textbooks, preferably written by a Christian, that offer a responsible reading of the nation’s past.

I told this person that I was not familiar with the 5th grade American history textbook market, but I would be willing to share the request with readers of this blog. If you have any suggestions for this teacher feel free to comment below or, if you are not a Current patron (only patrons have access to the comments), send me an e-mail or FB or Twitter direct message.

I am imagining that this teacher is looking for the 5th grade equivalent of something similar to Eerdmans’s Unto a Good Land; Wilfred McClay’s, Land of Hope; or Thomas Kidd’s American History.

Thanks for your help.
