Mike Pence calls Pope Francis “Holy Father” and all hell breaks lose in the conservative evangelical world

John Fea   |  March 4, 2025

File this post under the “Anti-Catholicism is alive and well” category.

Here is Pence’s tweet:

One of my greatest honors as Vice President was the hour I spent with Pope Francis at the Vatican in January 2020. @KarenPence and I join Catholics around the world Praying for this humble and godly man. God Bless the Holy FatheršŸ™ pic.twitter.com/4TNWQi9Ksq

This guy is questioning Pence’s Christianity:

I have heard from people in my theological circles that you were truly a Christian. You even attended a church pastored by a friend of mine. To see you affirm Roman Catholicism and say the man who thinks he is Head of the Church and the Vicar (substitute) of Christ on earth is…

— Justin Peters (@JustinPetersMin) March 3, 2025

Not an evangelical?:

ā€œThe Holy Fatherā€? Your entire political career you have been promoting yourself as an ā€œEvangelical championā€. You are in zero way Evangelical, let alone Biblically Christian, if you consider the pope ā€œHoly Fatherā€.
ā€œAnd call no man father which is on earth, for one is your…

And the hits keep coming:

Only the enemy of the Gospel calls someone on earth, ā€œfatherā€ā€”let alone holy father. Your Father is in heaven, if you have ever known Him.

Guess what?
Any faith which deviates from the tenant of salvation by faith alone in Christ alone is considered a cult.

If the Roman mother-son cult deviates from that orthodoxy– and it has and does– then what we have is a cult, not a denominational difference.

Disagree?
Then…

In case you've forgotten, Mike, the Protestant Reformation happened because of the false teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.

Mr Pence, would the Mike Pence of 2014 have done this or not? You need to do some serious soul searching, because the man that my Indianan friends praised when I was in college is somewhat a different picture than what I saw (and voted for once) in White House office and after.

There’s only one Holy Father, Mike. And I’m pretty sure He doesn’t dress like that.

— The Think Institute | Joel Settecase (@theThinkInst) March 3, 2025

This is why so many Christians like me have lost respect for you. What kind of a Christian refers to any man as "the Holy Father?" That's blasphemous! God alone is our Holy Father. To pin that label on a false teacher of another religion is very wrong. Why would you do that?

— Jared (@Livng4Jesus) March 2, 2025

Mike, Roman Catholicism is the greatest counterfeit of Bible Christianity in all of history. Please don’t call him holy father.

2 Corinthians 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what…

— Charles Cooper (@wfx2yf5p8c) March 3, 2025

He is not "The Holy Father." Catholics and Christians are not the same thing Mr. Vice President. Do not get them confused. He also is not godly. He actively supports LGBT.

— David Taylor (@davidtaylor0390) March 2, 2025

Um, he’s a heretic, Mike.

As a Protestant Christian, I would think you would know this.

It it ā€œgodlyā€ to anathematize the gospel? pic.twitter.com/znFolY5hJ1

— ChristopherT (@CBT_91) March 2, 2025

It is a shame that you profess to be a True Christian and then post something like this. Either you are naive or an imposter. The Pope is not a Christian and by you posting this it makes you suspect too.

— Russ Rice (@rricecoramdeo) March 3, 2025

@Mike_Pence Any respect that I had for you following the 2020 election has now been completely lost. May God open your eyes to see His truth. šŸ™ā˜ļø

You literally sat down with the Antichrist and called him the "Holy Father???!!! You continue to discredit yourself!

Evangelical fraud, @Mike_Pence , slithers back to his mama Church and pays homage to the Vicar of hell: "God Bless The Holy Father" – Mike Pence https://t.co/Poe5yF8BmD via @YouTube

I wonder what these people think of J. D. Vance.

One of several reasons the “Christian nationalism” program is heading toward choppy waters. A significant percent of the kinds of folk who will be pushing for such a program are some inveterate yahoos, frankly, and their yahooism isn’t reserved for “secularists” and scientists and the higher critics. It zeroes in on anything that deviates from its orthodoxy, and it isn’t gentle in its corrections. Getting all those people together is going to look like the ideological equivalent of Lebanon in the 1980s.
