There’s some wild stuff going on right now on conservative evangelical social media

John Fea   |  February 25, 2025

Some MAGA evangelicals are mad at the Philadelphia Eagles:

Let’s start off with some facts The Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles have not rejected an invitation to the White House.

But that did not stop many conservative evangelicals, looking for their next big grievance, to offer knee-jerk social media responses to rumors that the champs refused to make a visit to Washington to see Donald Trump. It looks like conservative media personality Megyn Kelly got things going by responding to an X post claiming the Eagles had rejected the invite:

SAME. GO F YOURSELVES EAGLES. My husband is a fan so I got onboard but F this BS https://t.co/KemoC67QEu

— Megyn Kelly (@megynkelly) February 24, 2025

The MAGA evangelicals smelled red meat and quickly started to stir the pot:

It is disgraceful and shameful that the Philadelphia Eagles petulantly refuse to accept President Trump's gracious invitation to the WH. I cannot again root for a team like this — and now I'm sorry I did. https://t.co/Hc6er7euKB

— Eric Metaxas (@ericmetaxas) February 24, 2025

The @Eagles are showing America how they can win it all but ultimately still lose in the minds of the nation.

— Sean Feucht (@seanfeucht) February 24, 2025

MAKE SPORTS UNWOKE AGAIN🙏🏽🇺🇸

— Sean Feucht (@seanfeucht) February 24, 2025

Not every NFL team has the same values or commitments when it comes to our nation. The @Chiefs and their ownership exemplifies a far more unifying and wholesome message for all Americans, especially young ppl. It’s why I rooted for them. @Eagles chose to make this about politics. https://t.co/3tEqM6Lgy0

There seems to be an X feud raging between provocateur’s Megan Basham and Anthony Bradley over race:

Irwyn Ince, director of the Presbyterian Church in America’s missions program apologized last week for a guidance that advised illegal immigrants on how to avoid ICE. This week, he is speaking at a racially segregated event for “black worshippers” only.

Is this how Christ’s… pic.twitter.com/9XxoLaFH4u

The following night, resurrection Oakland Church is holding separate event with Dr. Ince for the entire church.

But the one on 2/21 is only for those who are black. pic.twitter.com/1KboAFsiCt

It appears Dr. Ince has long advocated for segregated events. https://t.co/EbxTTMkHlr

Megan Basham is the personification of “Low IQ.” This is so dumb. This is the same ignorance that asks, “Why is there a Black Church?” Research shows that content like hers is a sure sign of significant father issues. pic.twitter.com/AQTf35YbtA

What can I say, I’m blessed in my critics who are so transparent in their inability to muster an intellectual (let alone biblical) defense that they’re left with nothing but the most frothing-at-the-mouth ad-hominem invective.

— Anthony Bradley (@drantbradley) February 22, 2025

This is disingenuous, as is every comment/retweet piling onto Dr. Ince.

Was "for Black worshipers" an awkward word choice? Maybe. But how many non-Black folks really want to come to a Black History Month event?

What do these folks REALLY want? 🤔 https://t.co/0im97YfYKr

— Rae Whitlock // Confessionally woke (@RaeWhitlock) February 21, 2025

This is the same tactic the kinists & racist theonomists (a neo-version of today’s Christian Nationalism) used when I was at Covenant Seminary. Same tribe, same methods but here’s Round 2. I’m not sure hearing from a bunch of racist Christian Nationalists is going to do!🤷🏾‍♂️ pic.twitter.com/xZq95g7ymo

— Anthony Bradley (@drantbradley) February 22, 2025

Sigh. More low IQ postings. Could you imagine attending such substandard seminaries and PhD programs that you never learned about the origins of the Black Church in America. The advantage of America PhDs is that you’re forced to take comprehensive exams to show broad knowledge. https://t.co/1bTcTcvuFp

— Anthony Bradley (@drantbradley) February 23, 2025

I know Megan’s family. I’ve known them for several years (almost several decades). I can say categorically all of Bradley’s comments are false.

First of all, @drantbradley has no clue what he’s talking about. He’s offering pure psychobabble pontifications that have no grounding… https://t.co/pQ5fwCeCfu

— Bill Roach (@billroach_) February 22, 2025

I first saw this kind of thing in 2018 when TGC hosted a meeting for "Women of Color." That was the last time any women from @gracebaptist attended anything TGC related. Sinful partiality is sinful no matter what your melanin count is.https://t.co/VTUdFlsYCQ https://t.co/w5OUNzU8UQ

— Tom Ascol @tomascol (@tomascol) February 22, 2025

I cannot believe this needs to be said, but no, churches should not hold events where only people with a particular skin color are welcome. Not in 1825 and not in 2025.

It’s all vile sin and shames the body of Christ.

— Megan Basham (@megbasham) February 22, 2025

I wasn’t going to do this tonight, but given that the conversation has carried on over the weekend…

Some, like @drantbradley, keep insisting that just because the event @Irwyn spoke at this weekend said it was for “black worshipers,” that doesn’t mean it was ONLY for black ppl.… https://t.co/2HEUtPV1wX

— Megan Basham (@megbasham) February 24, 2025

Sometimes 4, sometimes 5. pic.twitter.com/6bxeUqgpze

— Anthony Bradley (@drantbradley) February 24, 2025

Jesus had harsh words for legalistic religious leaders: hypocrites, blind guides, whitewashed tombs, brood of vipers, fools, lawless ones, children of hell, murderers of prophets, thieves, & sons of the devil—condemning their hypocrisy & spiritual blindness (Matt 23, John 8).

— Anthony Bradley (@drantbradley) February 24, 2025

Brothers & Sisters in Christ, the vitriol being unleashed on @drantbradley & @Irwyn is simply evil. We need to stand w/ these brothers in the face of wolves in sheep’s clothing. Doing so exposes us to the wolves’ attack. But the Great Shepherd is with us.

— Brian Fikkert (@Fikkert) February 24, 2025

Fascinating. I think his point is that this would be considered de facto partiality, which aligns with US church history. While evangelicals once praised de jure partiality as Godly, many today seem perfectly comfortable with its de facto form (see Basham below). Thoughts? https://t.co/teDZsCgIFo

— Anthony Bradley (@drantbradley) February 24, 2025

I also still do believe that the charge against is Rev. Ince is “ludicrous” and baseless, as Brad Edwards explains below. It was, indeed, posted out of ignorance of the black church experience in America and the black experience in predominantly white churches. https://t.co/iJ1ybIYxZf

— Anthony Bradley (@drantbradley) February 24, 2025

And, accusations like the ones wrongly launched against Rev. Ince have a long history amongst white conservatives. I have seen the worst through my career. It is, in my experience, a Christian sub-culture. It’s a tribe. You can read about it here: https://t.co/o6Uca4s4fL

— Anthony Bradley (@drantbradley) February 24, 2025

If you’d like to understand why what Rev. Ince did was benign, I’d recommend everyone, esp. Ms. Basham, read my book, “Aliens in The Promised Land.” I’d be honored if she posted a review. https://t.co/fZoxRdyBRb

— Anthony Bradley (@drantbradley) February 24, 2025

I do agree with Dr. Edmondson, “There is a real life person behind sister Basham’s avatar with real joys, sorrows, and burdens. I am praying for her today and invite you to as well. May the Lord meet her in her burdens & lift them.” This is my prayer as well.

— Anthony Bradley (@drantbradley) February 24, 2025

If this was a honest question, “Is this how Christ’s kingdom is supposed to work – – dividing up for events by skin color?” all Ms. Basham had to do what contact the church or Rev. Ince to get an answer before addressing it. That would have been the most charitable approach.

— Anthony Bradley (@drantbradley) February 24, 2025

“your boy”:

Anthony Bradley 🤝 Joe Biden: "You ain't black"

(Someone, seriously, from @ActonInstitute or Kuyper College, come get your boy) https://t.co/Sqa9kjMTcL

— William Wolfe 🇺🇸 (@William_E_Wolfe) February 24, 2025

I normally appreciate Baker’s perspective, but if he can look at Anthony Bradley’s nasty slander of @megbasham and just shrug it off, then he clearly has a discernment problem. https://t.co/9Z50wKRDom

— Eric Landfried (@e_landfried) February 24, 2025

This is so dishonest. Its worse than a straw man. Hunter is slandering Megan. I’ve never felt more welcome than when I attended a “black” church. Dylan Roof was welcomed at a “black” church. They don’t segregate. All are welcome. We’re criticizing #pcaga racial segregation https://t.co/baf9jt4bM2

— mason: i’m not just colorblind, i’m anti kinist (@2DLARBN) February 24, 2025

The @tgc crowd is now wagon-circling for the very woke @Irwyn and his racially-segregated church meetings https://t.co/Nsihb5zK7T

— William Wolfe 🇺🇸 (@William_E_Wolfe) February 24, 2025

This is crossing the rubicon. A big “masks off” moment.

If Hunter, who is squarely in the Big Eva fold, can come out to defend the puerile and bombastic behavior of Anthony Bradley, then ALL of the tone-policing and “concerns” about social media from his tribe is over. It’s… https://t.co/LJKbWfw2d6

— William Wolfe 🇺🇸 (@William_E_Wolfe) February 24, 2025

In this particular case his attacks on Megan are unprovoked, extreme and personal. https://t.co/HAYuLkMa7O

— Nate Fischer (@NateAFischer) February 24, 2025

You should unfollow, then. When I was called a “nigger” for 7 years by people like Megan, no one came to my defense. And, if you think I’m going remain silent and be a beta when someone like her attacks my brother and my friends, you’re out of your mind. You have no idea what is…

— Anthony Bradley (@drantbradley) February 22, 2025

You don’t know the context. You weren’t around 1) when she mocked me years ago (you can find it) and 2) when people from her same worldview did this last time. So, yes, people like her. Where were you in 2007? https://t.co/EcbBUoPOTu

— Anthony Bradley (@drantbradley) February 22, 2025

This is pure racial Gnosticism. @hunterbaker is claiming the crashed-out Anthony Bradley has some special “knowledge” about the black church no one else could possibly have, so don’t you dare argue with him.

(Never mind this whole thing wasn’t about the “black church” it was… https://t.co/JK2TBvXuju

— William Wolfe 🇺🇸 (@William_E_Wolfe) February 24, 2025

This post from @hunterbaker is still up

He still needs to delete it

He still needs to apologize to @megbasham for siding with the race-baiting madman that is Anthony Bradley

There is a terrible look for North Greenville University https://t.co/LJKbWfw2d6

— William Wolfe 🇺🇸 (@William_E_Wolfe) February 25, 2025

I think you get the idea

Some of the same folks are also up in arms about Wheaton College. I don’t have time to delve into all the details here, but we have covered this mess at CURRENT here and here and here.

Last night William Wolfe and his crowd at the Center for Baptist Leadership hosted an online event in which Wheaton alumni bashed their alma mater over the Russell Vought issue and a bunch of other stuff. Watch:

Has Wheaton Gone Woke? The Russ Vought Controversy and Fallout (ft. Daniel Davis & Eric Teetsel) https://t.co/c3ozGrrLGW

— Center for Baptist Leadership (@BaptistLeaders) February 25, 2025

The MAGA website The American Reformer is covering this:

Continuing the discussion on @WheatonCollege, @EricTeetsel asks those "who have taken to Wheaton’s defense can put aside the straw men and grapple with the tough questions."https://t.co/ReXZlvqUlS

— American Reformer (@AmReformer) February 24, 2025

Rod Dreher is in the mix:

Are you an alumnus of Wheaton College, or the parent of a Wheaton student? Then read and consider signing this open letter to its trustees, calling on them to turn the Evangelical school away from decadence, and to restore its character. https://t.co/DSswcUCMXE

— Rod Dreher (@roddreher) February 17, 2025

Tim Bayly believes some rebuking is in order:

I get it that followers wonder why on earth I bother with Wheaton College? The horse is dead, right? Get off it.
But Jesus didn't abandon the church of His time. He rebuked Pharisees to warn His sheep. This was critical part of His caring for sheep without shepherds.
Do the same.

— Tim Bayly † (@tbayly) February 24, 2025

Even The New Yorker is paying attention to this:

A Fistfight Over Donald Trump At the Evangelical Version of Harvard: At Wheaton College, a controversy around graduate Russell Vought, a Trump Administration official, shows how deeply the past decade has fractured conservative Christians (NYer) https://t.co/btloB5lfLg

Timothy Larsen responds:

More Timothy Larsen, the McManis Chair of Christian Thought at Wheaton:

"A prominent evangelical leader recently said publicly that you should not send your children to Wheaton, but to a truly Christian school such as Hillsdale. Hillsdale has many strengths, but being a thoroughly Christian college is not one of them." https://t.co/ZhDAUQ02tM

A theologian associated with Douglas Wilson and the reconstructionist Calvinism he promotes in Moscow, Idaho recently wrote a book titled The Sin of Empathy: Compassion and Its Counterfeits. Here is a description of the book:

The so-called virtue of empathy is the greatest rhetorical tool of manipulation in the 21st century.

Because love is a real virtue, empathy’s power is in posing as selfless care for victims.

A sad polar bear paces as David Attenborough informs you that the family suburban is melting the ice caps.

“Jesus was an asylum seeker!” the sign reads at an Open Borders Rally.

A forlorn Bruno wishes he too could change in the women’s locker room, a place he’s always known he belonged.

“My mom said if we don’t go she’ll be just devastated.”

When you reject the sin of empathy, you reject the manipulation of the media, the manipulation of family and friends, and most importantly, the manipulation of your own heart.

Here is is how Joe Rigney talks about the book:

Why did I write “The Sin of Empathy?”
Because for over a decade, these sorts of manipulative appeals worked on conservative evangelicals, resulting in division in communities, harm to people, and dishonor to God.pic.twitter.com/tq8rFSf5PS

— Joe Rigney (@joe_rigney) February 25, 2025

This comment is particularly funny coming out of a decade or more in which feminism, wokeness, and soft-pedaling sodomy infiltrated the SBC, the PCA, and other conservative evangelical contexts.
That’s who I wrote it for. And judging by the feedback I’ve received from folks in… https://t.co/8l2eQUsO5n

— Joe Rigney (@joe_rigney) February 24, 2025

Rigney’s book caught the attention of Albert Mohler, who hosted him on his podcast. They take shots at everyone from David French to the Pope. Why David French? Because of this column.

Here is a taste of the Rigney-Mohler conversation:

Tom Buck likes the book:

For 30 years of ministry I have warned about the danger of Christians having “misplaced compassion” and the damage that does.

I think that’s the same as the “sin of empathy.”

— Tom Buck (Five Point Buck AKA Five Point Baptist) (@TomBuck) February 23, 2025

In the SBC, every 2021 annual meeting messenger who voted for the EC to waive attorney/client privilege, every EC member who then voted to do so, every SBC leader who pushed the EC to do it…

should read “The Sin of Empathy,” see the error of their ways, and repent.

— Tom Buck (Five Point Buck AKA Five Point Baptist) (@TomBuck) February 24, 2025

Here is Douglas Wilson:

In my view, the central reason for the heated reaction is that in this book Joe dissects what he calls untethered empathy, empathy detached from the realities of objective truth. And this is the world we live in now—where “the feels” are the great hegemon. 3/7

— Douglas Wilson (@douglaswils) February 20, 2025

And, of course, there is also the fact that someone like Al Mohler took the time to interview Joe on the subject. The argument Joe is presenting is desperately needed in our time, and it is now being taken as seriously as it should be. Those who are opposed felt they needed to…

— Douglas Wilson (@douglaswils) February 20, 2025

For my part, I would urge everyone to calm down. All Joe wants is for Aslan to breathe on the statues. 7/7

— Douglas Wilson (@douglaswils) February 20, 2025

George Yancey gets it right:

I decided to read the interview on the sin of empathy given the controversy surrounding the issue. Again and again it occurred to me that this idea has become popular in conservative Christian circles as a way to defend some of Trump's policies. https://t.co/iw2cVTRcSn

— George Yancey (@profyancey) February 20, 2025

This guy loves what he is seeing:

I love that the idea of empathy as a sin is becoming more mainstream. I was convinced of it years ago and searched to see if any Christians were talking about it. That’s how I first came across @joe_rigney. His new book The Sin of Empathy just came out and I’m excited to read it. https://t.co/ANfnNSdq99

— Josh Daws (@JoshDaws) February 19, 2025

What would a debate among conservative evangelicals be without someone mentioning Russell Moore:

The Sin of Empathy is why Russell Moore was allowed to destroy the SBC as we know it.

— William Wolfe 🇺🇸 (@William_E_Wolfe) February 20, 2025

And this:

Conservatives always find the worst arguments against bad things. pic.twitter.com/eQC1hW0BJF

— Nathan | Classical Conservative (@TheClassicalCon) February 20, 2025

Mike Stone ran for president of the Southern Baptist Convention a few years ago:

Having listened to the interview, no, I’m not “OK” with it.

I’m elated with it.

And last but not least, the theocratic wing of Reformed Christianity is not happy that Paula White-Cain is now working on “faith issues” for the Trump administration:
