The “Born to Run” conference

The Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music at Monmouth University in West Long Branch has issued a call for papers and panel abstracts for an academic conference devoted to the ā€œlife, work and influenceā€ of Springsteen to mark the 50th anniversary of the landmark album, ā€œBorn to Run,ā€ which was released Aug. 25, 1975.

The ā€œBorn to Runā€ conference is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 7; the deadline for submissions is Saturday, March 15.

Individual paper abstracts should be 150 to 250 words in length, with a brief author bio of 75 to 100 words. Do not send full papers, book chapters, CVs, etc.

Scholarship focused on ā€œBorn to Runā€ will be prioritized, but other possible subjects include:

  • Springsteen and Citizenship
  • Springsteen and Critical Theory
  • Springsteen and Race
  • Springsteen and Education
  • Springsteen and Gender
  • Springsteen and Musicianship
  • Springsteen and New Jersey

  • Springsteen and Politics
  • Springsteen and Psychology
  • Springsteen and Rock ā€˜n’ Roll Iconography
  • Springsteen and the American Pastoral
  • Springsteen and the Music Business
  • Springsteen and the Politics of Culture
  • Springsteen and/as Literature
  • Springsteen as Narrative Poet
  • Springsteen in the 21st Century
  • Springsteen on War
  • Springsteen’s Musical Contemporaries
  • Springsteen’s Musical Influences
  • Springsteen’s Musical Legacy.

Monmouth University is located about a mile from the bungalow in the West End section of Long Branch where Springsteen wrote ā€œBorn to Run.ā€

ā€œā€™Born to Run’ lifted us into another league,ā€ said Springsteen in his memoir, also titled ā€œBorn to Runā€. ā€œWe were a new young force to be reckoned with.ā€

The academic conference is the first of multiple ā€œBorn to Runā€ events the Springsteen Archives will be hosting to mark the landmark album’s 50th anniversary. More will be announced.
