The Trump wrecking ball keeps swinging. What are evangelicals saying?

John Fea   |  February 13, 2025

MAGA prophet Lance Wallnau once claimed that God told him that Donald Trump “is a wrecking ball to the spirit of political correctness.” Well, it looks the prophecy came true. The new president, with the help of Elon Musk, is trying to use his proverbial wrecking ball to destroy the federal government. As historian Johann Neem recently wrote, Trump is no longer the President of the United States, he is a tyrant who is exercising a coup.

Let’s see what evangelical Christians are saying:

World Relief keeps us informed:

On the blog, catch up on our 2025 Policy Watch List and learn more about the recent executive orders that directly impact our work and the people we serve. As people of faith, we are called to act. We must stand in the GAP.

Take action today. šŸ”— https://t.co/koEmGr8yxV pic.twitter.com/YGniftRYN1

The Holy Post Podcast tackles the defunding of US AID:

If we say we want to help people and then oppose legislation that will do so, maybe we just don't actually want to help people. @philvischer

Today on šŸŽ™ļøHoly Post 656, we unpack the defunding of USAID and whether the White House's claims of waste & fraud are legitimate. pic.twitter.com/sOKRo0ZJ7P

Tony Perkins has thoughts on PEPFAR. The Christian Right has been making this argument since PEPFAR began more than 20 years ago:

There should be no congressional reauthorization of PEPFAR without a statutory attachment of the Mexico City Policy.

The promotion and tax-payer funding of abortion overseas has no place in America’s fight against HIV/AIDS.

— Tony Perkins (@tperkins) February 12, 2025

An evangelical cheerleader for Project 2025 wants a “moral vision”:

New @WNGdotorg: Present political momentum for the American Right must also include the restoration of a moral vision.

The real battle is not over tax rates or regulatory reform—important as those may be—but over the nature of family, the dignity of the human person, and virtue…

— Andrew T. Walker (@andrewtwalk) February 12, 2025

It looks like Andrew T. Walker, Jemar Tisby, and Kristin Kobes Du Mez all agree that activism is the answer. Keep the culture war going!

The culture war is just a dispute over reality. You can try to opt out, but if at any point you want to go along with what is true and real, you’re going to be found to be a culture warrior. Just own it.

Respecting reality is freeing.

— Andrew T. Walker (@andrewtwalk) February 8, 2025

Now, under this regime, it seems clear: more of us *should* have been speaking out. And the debate itself felt misguided then and foolish now.

— Jemar Tisby, PhD (@jemartisby.bsky.social) 2025-02-10T13:31:39.919Z

I remember it being a sloppy debate, too. As if using one’s scholarship to defend the status quo isn’t also activism.

Rick Warren is back in the news. He is today’s flavor of the day for the MAGA evangelicals:

John 19:18 ā€œThey crucified Jesus with two others-one on each side & Jesus in the middle.ā€
The guys on both sides were thieves.

If you’re looking for the #realJesus, not a caricature disfigured by partisan motivations, you’ll find him in the middle, not on either side. pic.twitter.com/wYmLyayqsZ

This is possibly the worst Biblical interpretation I’ve ever seen, and that’s really saying something.

Many MAGA evangelicals were thrilled to see Elon in the Oval Office:

Now that might explain why so many democrats are screaming bloody murder as fraud and waste is exposed! https://t.co/iLBiIODUUO

Eric has an interpretation of what Elon Musk was doing in the Oval Office on Tuesday:
