Some early responses to the death of Tony Campolo

John Fea   |  November 20, 2024

Tony Campolo stories abound. I never met him, but I saw him speak many times. I would go out of my way to hear him.

The first time I saw him was at the Ocean City (NJ) Tabernacle. Campolo spoke there every summer. During college I was dating a girl whose family had a house in Ocean City and we decided to go to hear him. Her parents were very conservative evangelicals and, for whatever reason, they decided to come along. Their pastor, who was ordained in the General Association of Regular Baptists, joined us. Very early in Campolo’s sermon he started preaching about how evangelicals did not care about the poor. My girlfriend’s parents walked out. So did their pastor. I later learned that they were troubled by Campolo’s social justice message. I am sure that wasn’t the first time someone walked out of a Tony Campolo sermon!

One of my favorite Campolo talks, I listened to it again this morning, was titled “Tradition: The Key to a Close Knit Family.” Listen to it here.

I will have more to say about Campolo in the next year or so. I am completing a book on evangelicals and politics in the 21st century and I cover Campolo and his work with Bill Clinton.

What are people saying about Campolo’s death:

Here is Christianity Today’s obituary.

Shane Claiborne:

Today I lost a dear friend and brother… Tony Campolo has been my partner in ministry for the past 20+ years at @RedLetterXians. I will miss him something fierce, but I know there’s a party on the other side.

I don’t have much more to say right now. But I will soon.

Here’s more:

Tony Campolo passed away today.

He was 89 years old.

He was one of the most gifted preachers I have ever heard.

If you have a few minutes, listen to him tell the story of throwing a birthday party for a prostitute in Hawaii.

It's worth your time. pic.twitter.com/8oHjiUulGc

One of my preaching hero’s, The Rev Dr. Tony Campolo has died. I was blessed to get a chance to meet him & he was everything I had hoped & more. He had a profound impact on my understanding of the Spirit, preaching, & living out the Gospel. Well done good & faithful servant! pic.twitter.com/NCSOiPaumZ

I read Tony Campolo in seminary when I was deciding on pursuing a PhD in sociology. Hadn’t ever read any evangelical sociologists before that. Gave me hope that being a social scientist could actually help inform faith rather than tear it down. Still think that.

RIP, Tony.

I heard Tony Campolo speak as a student at Taylor in the 1990's. Those were the most powerful talks I've ever heard. He was right that sex workers are human beings and we can be kind to them. He was also right that life is best understood as: it's Friday but Sunday's coming.

Wow, just saw that Tony Campolo died.

When I was at New Man magazine I wrote an open letter to him, challenging him on some point of theology. Not only did he reply with a lengthy letter, he met with me when he came through town. He was extremely gracious, seemingly unfazed by…

Tony Campolo died.

He preached in my small Texas town when I was a kid. He said something like: “Yesterday X number of kids in the USA died from starvation and malnutrition, and most of you don’t give a damn. In fact, you’re more upset I said ‘damn’ than you are that those kids…

Eastern University is remembering Tony Campolo who died this morning. Sociology professor, preacher–he helped Eastern be a more open institution, one focused on justice. As a colleague I was grateful for that. @EasternUhttps://t.co/vhiK4JqkQ9

There was no one quite like Tony Campolo. I first heard him preach in the 1980s, when I was a college kidhttps://t.co/Q2PAiucqdW

I am really sad to hear about the death of Tony Campolo. He was kind to me, and I respected him a lot from my teenage years on- especially his work for children in poverty around the world. Blessings to and prayers for the Campolo family

RIP Tony Campolo, who spoke several times at Bethel over the years. I think his first visit was in 1979, when his chapel talk was entitled, "Sacred Cows Make Great Hamburgers."Here he is preaching the one time I saw him, in 2005.cdm17518.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/coll…
