Kamala Harris could be the first woman president as early as today

John Fea   |  November 13, 2024

What if Joe Biden resigned today?

Here is Carrie Friedman at The Washington Post:

We owe a debt of gratitude to President Joe Biden for his lifetime of service — and for his patriotism in stepping aside in July. Still, I hope he’ll commit to one more selfless act for the good of the country: Step down and install Vice President Kamala Harris as the 47th president of the United States.

It would be a much-needed morale boost. We just watched this country elect its first convicted felon to the presidency, before its first woman. Half of this country can’t seem to envision a woman in the role of president. Biden can help them — by giving them a taste of how it could be.

Biden’s legacy is secure. He saved our country from financial disaster, brought us back from covid-19 and undid many of the first Trump presidency’s cruel policies. He gave us a robust job market and economy, despite what Fox News has told its viewers.

Come January, we’ll face emboldened xenophobic, misogynist and racist groups. The Proud Boys are already gloating on social media. We’ll soon learn just how quickly women’s rights will be curtailed by Project 2025, Donald Trump’s blueprint for the next four years.

Biden could show the world, show us all — but especially this country’s moms, daughters, and the Black and Brown women who have carried this country on their backs — that it can happen, it can be done. A woman can be president.

Harris is already our first female vice president. Doug Emhoff is our first second gentleman. (Imagine! He could decorate the White House for the holidays.)
