7 days until Election Day. What are evangelicals saying?

John Fea   |  October 29, 2024

Yesterday Donald Trump spoke to the members of his National Faith Advisory Board’s National Faith Summit in Powder Springs, Georgia. Newsweek covers it here.

Watch:

At about the 29:55 mark, Paula White says “we believe that God has saved you for a purpose…there is a country to save.”

33:00: Paula White says that Trump will open a “faith office” in the Oval Office. Really? In the Oval Office?

33:49: Notice that Paula White calls Trump a “fighter.” As I will argue in my forthcoming book, one of the reasons so many evangelicals turned toward Trump in 2016 was because they did not think George W. Bush or previous GOP presidents (Reagan and George H.W. Bush) were “fighters” for their causes.

33:45: Veteran Christian Right activist and 2000 presidential candidate Gary Bauer is in the house. Bauer praises Trump for “turning Madison Square Garden into MAGA Square Garden.” Let’s remember that Bauer is endorsing this. Bauer says that conservative evangelicals will vote for Trump out of “gratitude.” He says that it is a “Christian virtue to be grateful.” Again, I think the subtext here is the Barna survey that indicates millions of Christians will stay home in November. Bauer appears to be trying to shame conservative evangelicals into voting for Trump by telling them that they are not exercising the Christian virtue of gratitude.

Bauer then asks Trump about biological men playing women’s sports. Trump uses the opportunity to pivot to immigration.

39:00: Trump says “I’ve been better than any other president to Israel, by far.”

53:00: The Trump evangelicals come on stage to pray for Trump. The group includes Jack Graham, Ralph Reed, Tim Clinton, Jentezen Franklin, Johnnie Moore, and Jonathan Cahn. It’s a gathering of many of the old court evangelicals.

National Religious Broadcasters is getting out the vote for Donald Trump:

WASHINGTON, D.C. (NRB) â€” The National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) association, the world’s leading association of Christian communicators, has launched a series of free, downloadable radio spots encouraging Christians to exercise their right and privilege to vote.

These public service announcements (PSAs) are offered as a free resource to radio stations serving faith audiences. Stations are invited to air these messages through November 5, 2024. Download the PSAs HERE.

“We are proud to partner with respected faith leaders to produce radio spots that encourage and energize Christians to exercise their right and responsibility to vote,” said Troy A. Miller, NRB president & CEO. “In these final days before the election, we want Christian voters to receive clear and persuasive reminders that their vote will make a difference for the future of faith and freedom in America.”

The PSAs feature well-known Christian leaders, including Dr. David Jeremiah, Dr. Robert Jeffress, Jim Daly, John MacArthur, Allen Jackson, and James E. Ward. Jr., delivering an encouraging call-to-action to Christian voters.

Miller has penned several recent op-eds underscoring the importance of evangelical Christian participation in the 2024 election. Read more in the Daily Caller (“It’s Time To Get Millions Of Evangelical Voters To The Polls,” August 18, 2024) and Fox News (“This group has the numbers to decide the US presidency – if they turn out,” October 10, 2024)

National Religious Broadcasters is the latest organization worried about the Barna report that indicates millions of Christians may not vote next week.

Hey religion and political journalists: if you are looking for a story about evangelicals and the election, check out conservative evangelicals are freaking out about this Barna poll that says millions of Christians are staying home on election day. https://t.co/Ojdd7qDrpy

Let’s see what is happening on X:

Disgraced former Trump lawyer Jenna Ellis, who lost her license to practice law for her role in Trump’s efforts to steal the 2020 election, is talking about America’s “moral basis”:

America really needs to return to its moral basis if we are going to continue to inherent the blessings of liberty.

This election is crucial, but what we do after November 5th as conservatives is even more important for this nation.

The Faith & Freedom Coalition wants to make sure that everyone knows their founder, Ralph Reed, was present for this:

More on that Trump meeting with Paula White’s faith advisory board:

President Trump: “Religion is under threat in this country, serious threat. And we can’t let that happen because I really believe it’s the fabric of our country. It’s the thing that holds our country together. And we can’t lose it, and we’re not going to lose it.” pic.twitter.com/ZfhfWg0SX9

“God’s perfect timing”:

Would not have been possible to achieve this level of alignment of (Elon, RFKjr, Tusli, Tucker) and national momentum if this were the end of Trumps second term 2020-24. Who would have picked up the Trump assignment? Even JD wasn’t fully on board. God has perfect timing. https://t.co/5uncFR82da

Actually, this was not George Washington goal. Washington never once “pointed the fledgling nation to Jesus.” In fact, he only mentioned Jesus twice in all his writings:

G. WASHINGTON'S PRESECRIPTION FOR A HAPPY NATION
Our goal is not to turn Jesus into either a Republican or Democrat but to turn both toward Jesus, and vote for whoever is closest to Him. This was G. Washington’s goal, for upon winning Independence from Great Britain, he pointed

This is apparently what will happen if Christians don’t vote:

PRAY. VOTE. PRAY.https://t.co/tCIXBz1p2l

That nativist, misogynistic, xenophobic Trump rally in Madison Square Garden didn’t seem to phase Allie one bit:

How can I still vote for Trump as a Christian after the NYC rally? Easy. I find the unbridled celebration of baby-murder seen at Harris’s rallies as far more vulgar than off-color jokes about Puerto Rico. ‘Offensive’ words won’t destroy our country; bad policy will.

— Allie Beth Stuckey (@conservmillen) October 28, 2024

Eric Metaxas has a “I know you are, but what am I?” moment:

FUN FACT: Those calling Trump a Nazi are ACTUALLY the Nazis.

Tony Perkins on Harris’s position on abortion:

For any Christian thinking of not voting, consider what your absence will support.

Albert Mohler on the death of religious liberty:

"If Harris is elected president of the United States, she will accept no “concessions,” even for religious freedom. The most basic evil of abortion is that babies die in the womb. But we can also see that this is how religious liberty dies."

Huck voted:

Voted for ⁊@realDonaldTrump⁩ this morning. Easy decision. Who are those undecided voters? What the %#* are they undecided about? pic.twitter.com/jlWsjn6eUO

We have freedom here–I pray we use that freedom for good, spiritual and moral GOOD. https://t.co/F2eui2s4vr

Tom Buck on sin:

I don’t criticize anyone for voting for Trump.

I say it’s a sin to vote for Harris.

But, sadly, some say you must vote for Trump or you’re sinning and no better than Pilate who turned Jesus over to be crucified. https://t.co/dlVe1DsWOD

A “chosen vessel”:

— Sean Feucht (@seanfeucht) October 29, 2024

Marxists are on the loose!:

“Don’t do what we did. Our country is a shell of what it used to be. We have monuments to God but the church is empty and Marxists are driving out every mention of God in our land. Islam will replace Chrstianity as the predominant religion in my lifetime.” 😳@calvinrobinson

Sean is no fan of Christianity Today articles:

THE DUMBEST AND MOST BIBLICALLY ILLITERATE ELECTION TAKE OF ALL TIME. https://t.co/vvOxr6UVss

— Sean Feucht (@seanfeucht) October 28, 2024

World Relief VP Matt Soerens:

“If Trump wants to direct his trademark ‘You’re Fired!’ to
Harris, he must first do so to any advisors foolishly telling him
he must embrace abortion rights, become be so ‘tough’ on immigration that he separates families & keep out persecuted Christians” https://t.co/Til259i0Ma https://t.co/jvcFoIVKTI

— Matthew Soerens (@MatthewSoerens) October 28, 2024

Christianity Today podcaster Mike Cosper:

Abe Greenwald nails it on todays Commentary Podcast — all Trump had to do at MSG is make fun of Nazis and fascists, all of whom fell when they challenged the USA, offer the slightest unifying vision, and fly in the face of the “he’s a fascist” expectations. But he made no effort

— Mike Cosper (@MikeCosper) October 28, 2024

Cosper on the Trump MSG rally:

To my pro-Trump friends/followers. I just want to offer one more lens on this thing last night:

Stephen Miller echoes Hitler’s nativist slogan.

Tucker Carlson misidentifies Harris’ racial identity for the LOLs.

Tony Hinchcliffe calls Puerto Rico an island of garbage.

Sid

— Mike Cosper (@MikeCosper) October 28, 2024

It’s interesting to see the argument in defense of Trump that Tony Hinchcliffe’s jokes weren’t vetted, as though that excuses them.

It strikes me that if Tony’s jokes weren’t vetted, he’d have roasted Trump a bit more in the standard way he roasts everyone.

But even if true,

Jezebel.

“Jesus Christ may not be on the ballot, but the Jezebel is.” đŸ”„ @calvinrobinson

— Ryan Helfenbein (@RHelfenbein) October 28, 2024

It apparently all boils down to race:

It was never as simple as "economic anxiety." It was racial anxiety about the United States not being a "white man's nation" anymore. Much of what has brought us to the brink in this political season is linked to this fact. The sooner we admit it, the better we can resist it.
