9 days until Election Day. What are evangelicals saying?

John Fea   |  October 27, 2024

Alex Morris of Rolling Stone, who writes regularly about the Christian Right, has a recent piece on evangelicals trying to convince their fellow believers to vote for Harris. It focuses on Evangelicals for Harris and Doug Pagitt’s Vote Common Good. As I argued this week, there are a lot of evangelicals who do not want to vote for Trump. But I think they will be moved less by Evangelicals for Harris or Vote Common Good and more by Harris articulating a pluralist vision that includes evangelicals. But it’s probably too late for that.

When it comes to voting, we often hear that older evangelicals vote for Trump and younger evangelicals are more moderate or progressive. But as Harvest Prude writes at Christianity Today, things are much more complicated than that.

An evangelical political scientist does not like either of his major party options this year. But rather than voting for a third party candidate, he has decided he will not vote. Read Robert Postic’s piece at Christianity Today here.

In the “like father-like son” department, Jimmy Swaggart’s son Donnie Swaggart is condemning members of a Black evangelical denomination for supporting Kamala Harris. Here is a taste of a piece from the Christian Post:

Evangelist Donnie Swaggart, the only son of televangelist Jimmy Swaggart, is now coming under fire from black Christians after he delivered a scathing rebuke of the black church and Bishop John Drew Sheard, the presiding bishop and chief apostle of the Church of God in Christ, Inc., for endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris for president.

“The statement I’m about to make, I’m going to be called a racist and I will be called every name under the sun, but somebody needs to stand up and speak to the black church,” Swaggart began in his critique to members of the Family Worship Center Church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where his father remains senior leader.

“When the largest African American Pentecostal denomination, when that leader stands up and said I endorse that woman, he was saying, I endorse murder, I endorse homosexuality, I endorse lesbianism, I endorse transgenderism, I endorse every evil that Hell could prosper or bring up to [be] right. That’s wrong folks!” he said to applause.

Let’s check out what’s happening on X:

Roger Stone recognizes Donald Trump as an “apostle”:

Kamala tries to nuance her position on abortion:

WATCH: Kamala Harris tries to convince a PA voter that she believes Christian Americans shouldn’t be judged for their beliefs or have to change their views on abortion.

But days ago, she unequivocally opposed religious exemptions for her abortion-on-demand agenda. pic.twitter.com/ipmdoAWYaO

It’s a rare moment when I have no words but this legion of imbeciles is stupefying.

My take on this tweet: Tom forgot to capitalize Oval Office. 😉

Christians who support Kamala Harris for POTUS make me wonder if we are practicing the same religion. She is the most wicked, incompetent candidate we have ever had this close to the oval office. It will be a mercy from God if she is kept from being elected.

Eric Metaxas has been comparing Biden and Harris to Hitler for the last three or four years. Now he is worried about this:

Kamala and Hillary are so unhinged at the idea of Trump winning that they are comparing him to Hitler IN ORDER to incite someone to shoot him. That's obviously the campaign strategy. And for good measure they accuse his supporters of political violence. PRAY FOR THIS NATION.

Gary Bauer has some things to say about the Kamala Harris/”Jesus is Lord” controversy:

In this week’s “Defending Faith, Family, and Freedom” podcast for JDFI, I describe the moment when two young Christians proclaimed the name of Jesus at a rally celebrating abortion. What happened next might determine who leads America in the years ahead.https://t.co/JDxQoxwp15

Franklin is making his final push for Trump:

Just a few days ago Vice President Kamala Harris was speaking at a campus event and some students yelled out, "JESUS IS LORD!" Her response? "YOU GUYS ARE AT THE WRONG RALLY!"

That speaks volumes, doesn't it?

In contrast, former President Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump )…

When it comes to the Middle East, Shane does not think Harris is the answer:

People keep telling me that if we can just get Harris elected, she will change course on Israel. But someone dear to me said, “It sounds like an abusive partner saying, ‘If you’ll just marry me, I’ll change my behavior.’”

This Baptist wants pastors to “get political.” (Translation: Vote for Trump):

There is a lot going on in this Mark Driscoll tweet:

Men who support the genocide of unborn children have a millstone necklace waiting for them at the gates of hell.

Jemar is not happy with the Los Angeles Times:

What a weak excuse. He inserted himself into the editorial process to lend legitimacy to the candidate who has consistently said he will undermine democratic processes and use presidential powers to punish his opponents. Sad! https://t.co/8bSwdFL5zi
