Evangelicals respond to the Democratic National Convention (so far)

John Fea   |  August 22, 2024

Night four of the Democratic National Convention is here. It’s Kamala Harris’s night.

Here is what some American evangelicals have been saying this week as the Dems gather in Chicago:

The former president of the Southern Baptist Convention believes that politics cannot “change the world”:

I'd rather attend the Southern Baptist Convention than either of the political conventions.

1. There are more people there.
2. We actually believe what we're singing and talking about.
3. There's 10 times more power there to change the world.

— Bart Barber (@bartbarber) August 21, 2024

Dwight McKissic of “Evangelicals for Harris” on why he will not vote for Donald Trump:

Twelve Reasons Why I Cannot and Will Not Vote for Donald J. Trump:
1) Inciting the January 6 insurrection
2) Offering complete immunity to police who murder innocent, unarmed persons, as in the case of Sonya Massey, where he declared on the heels of her murder, if elected…

— Dwight McKissic (@pastordmack) August 19, 2024

Pastor Dwight calls attention to the pro-life Democrats in Chicago:

Inclusion of Pro Life Democrats? An idea whose time has come.pic.twitter.com/DGDOPLGKkb

— Dwight McKissic (@pastordmack) August 20, 2024

Pastor Tom thinks Pastor Dwight is representing “Evangelicals for Molech”:

Behold the vacuous moral equivalence that is plunging our nation further into the hellacious pit of child sacrifice. It goes like this:

"I agree child sacrifice is evil but Orange Man Bad. Therefore, I stand with evangelicals for Molech."

May God have mercy! https://t.co/qRT5Azq4Rv

— Tom Ascol @tomascol (@tomascol) August 21, 2024

Politics as spiritual warfare is a big theme among many conservative evangelicals:

Behind all the emotional speeches about hope and love and compassion at the DNC, babies are literally being murdered in sacrifice to their god. Fitting, since Satan always disguises himself as an angel of light https://t.co/hRP6XYtMPj

— Allie Beth Stuckey (@conservmillen) August 21, 2024

Christianity Today podcaster Mike Cosper on Gus “That’s My Dad” Walz:

Look… if you make fun of kids during an election,

You’re a ghoul.

Doesn’t matter which party. Off limits. Period.

— Mike Cosper (@MikeCosper) August 22, 2024

Lisa Sharon Harper is part of the “Evangelicals for Harris” campaign. She is not happy about how the convention is treating the Israel-Palestine conflict:

By erasing the Palestinian voice, the @DemConvention is telling us: The diversity, the tears, the inspiring coach, the Oprah, the Obamas, and even the Black woman at the top is all wallpaper over the same white supremacy infested same-old-same-old. @Tim_Walz @Oprah @BarackObama…

— Lisa Sharon Harper (she/her) (@lisasharper) August 22, 2024

There is still time to change course, @DemConvention. I have marveled that not even @RashidaTlaib was invited to speak.

How could you allow this, @KamalaHarris?

This erasure of Palestinian voice betrays a hierarchy of human belonging under the surface of the facade of Love…

— Lisa Sharon Harper (she/her) (@lisasharper) August 22, 2024

Shane Claiborne with similar thoughts:

Why I'm glad there are protests at the DNC…
we've got to stop supporting the genocide in Gaza.
As the Democrats party, women and children are dying every day.

— Shane Claiborne (@ShaneClaiborne) August 22, 2024

I stand with all those who are asking the DNC to let Palestinians speak.

Every Palestinian life is just as precious as every Israeli life.

Compassion has no borders.

We must grieve all the lives lost… set all the hostages free… and demand a permanent ceasefire now. And we… pic.twitter.com/Ku6MbLhinS

Sean has things to say about “victimization”:

Victimization is the highest virtue to the woke religion of the DNC. https://t.co/i78khzBYz6

— Sean Feucht (@seanfeucht) August 22, 2024

More demons:

The altars of the DNC gods have been erected for “The demons demand human sacrifice.”

Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council does not like what he saw in Chicago:

Meanwhile here in Dallas Ft Worth the Prestonwood Pregnancy Center Mobile Unit equipped with ultra sound and medical professionals is moving through out the Metroplex saving babies and offering hope in Jesus. Every Single Day We love life https://t.co/602CPiRWiS

— Jack Graham (@jackngraham) August 21, 2024

Franklin Graham:

The Democratic National Convention is being held this week in Chicago, and Planned Parenthood brought a mobile clinic to offer free medication abortions and “emergency contraception” on site. This shouldn’t be surprising and just goes to show the depravity of politics today. The…

Robert Jeffress is all over this story:

Eric Metaxas lives for this brand-building opportunity every four years:

There is nothing more evil than child rape. God is a judge. https://t.co/6gSzoTJKPj

— Eric Metaxas (@ericmetaxas) August 22, 2024

This blood is on the hands of @Evangels4Harris. Christians must speak out against this evil. https://t.co/1pBtbzhyFc

Pastors and priests like this man make me want to be an atheist. https://t.co/sivM1w985U

Another “Evangelical for Harris”:

JUST IN: Democrat Texas State Representative James Talarico, a Christian who is currently in Seminary and is supporting Kamala Harris has a warning to conservative evangelicals: "Donald Trump is taking your vote for granted. He thinks he's got it in the bag…and honestly, I… pic.twitter.com/1PN6Tz29Wy

— David Brody (@DBrodyReports) August 22, 2024

According to Ralph Reed, the media doesn’t portray the “real” Donald Trump:

This is the Donald Trump I know and the media will not show the American people. https://t.co/CWXipOvYIP

— Ralph Reed (@ralphreed) August 22, 2024

Gary Bauer is one of the few members of the Christian Right commenting on Harris’s economic plan:

pic.twitter.com/fAYTpKDt1c

— Gary L Bauer (@GaryLBauer) August 22, 2024

Andrew T. Walker doesn’t like “liberal Lutherans,” but he does like name-calling:

There must be some sophomore sociology major with a minor in religion from a lib Lutheran college running this account. Hallmark card theology meets social justice do-goodism. https://t.co/8J2IHhUms9

— Andrew T. Walker (@andrewtwalk) August 20, 2024

But professor Walker also believes in “wisdom” and “humility” and Jesus Christ:

First day of fall classes for me @SBTS. I wrote this classroom prayer that my class will pray aloud together today and through the semester. If this is a blessing to you, please feel free to take a copy for yourself. pic.twitter.com/djWBPfJv7R

— Andrew T. Walker (@andrewtwalk) August 20, 2024

Andrew Walker’s mentor, Al Mohler, on the “party of sterility an death”:

“It is increasingly clear that the Democrats really are the party of sterility and death. No less than The New York Times predicted that the DNC will be a display of “unbridled abortion politics.””

From my latest @wngdotorg. Link to read below.https://t.co/bIZ3sORy1h

— Albert Mohler (@albertmohler) August 19, 2024

Dr. Mohler is not happy with his governor:

Governor Andy Beshear’s Political Bluster at the DNC: It Was a Morally Reprehensible Denial of the Sanctity and Dignity of Unborn Human Life.

The theobros went after Oprah as well:

Pro-abortionists like Winfrey often hide the brutality of abortion behind euphemisms.

Here she says the American dream will die unless women have the right to choose when to bring their children into the world.

But no one is debating the timing of bringing children into the… pic.twitter.com/SUwppUglqf

— Denny Burk (@DennyBurk) August 22, 2024

They also do not like “Evangelicals for Harris”:

“You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.”

-Exodus 20:7 https://t.co/6a3MRz1Bg0

— Denny Burk (@DennyBurk) August 20, 2024

Phil Vischer has thoughts:

…so fanatically committed to unfettered access to assault weapons. And the other to unfettered access to abortion. If you're old enough, you remember that this was not always the case, and that both parties adopted their current positions …

On TwiXter you see a group of fellow Christians praise a speech as the best thing they've ever heard, while another decries it as words straight from the pit of Hell.

Mike Huckabee, former Southern Baptist pastor, is now making IQ comments about his political enemies:

3 Stooges? 3 Blind Mice? Cumulative IQ just barely above green beans. https://t.co/81C4fzy17T

— Gov. Mike Huckabee (@GovMikeHuckabee) August 21, 2024

Huck is the Christian Right king of one liners:

The DNC crowd waved signs reading “We (heart) Joe!” If they really (heart)ed Joe, they wouldn’t have (boot)ed Joe. That heart should have been a boot!

— Gov. Mike Huckabee (@GovMikeHuckabee) August 20, 2024

Huck is also turning on Caitlin Collins of CNN:

It's not journalism because Kaitlin Collins is no journalist. She's a partisan poser. To put it another way: She is NOT to journalism what Caitlin Clark is to basketball–@CaitlinClark22 is the GOAT! https://t.co/mrpdBOwSD4
