Tim Walz: Springsteen fan

In case you missed it last night, Democratic VP presumptive nominee Tim Walz talked about a Springsteen concert he attended with Pennsylvania governor Josh Shapiro:

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz takes the stage at the first Harris-Walz rally in Philadelphia.

"There is no one you would rather go to a Springsteen concert in Jersey with than him," Gov. Walz says about Gov. Shapiro, who gave a fiery speech before Harris and Walz took the stage. pic.twitter.com/OUDDUtNxB4

As governor of Minnesota, Walz declared March 5, 2023 “Bruce Springsteen Day” in the state.

ā€œSpringsteen’s music is a source of inspiration for many people in Minnesota, reminding us of the values we hold dear, including kindness, compassion and fairness,ā€ theĀ proclamation signed by Mr. WalzĀ said. https://t.co/lgK3SyeosI pic.twitter.com/W9qNvaT6ge

By the way, the Springsteen t-shirt Walz is wearing in this picture is from the 2024 world tour. I need to see an older t-shirt or hear about Walz’s favorite Springsteen albums before I am willing to welcome into the club. šŸ™‚

Here is Nick Corasaniti at The New York Times:

Last year, a blue state governor signed a proclamation declaring March 5 Bruce Springsteen Day.

The state was not New Jersey.

Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, an enthusiastic fan of The Boss who became Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate on Tuesday, marked the rocker’s concert in St. Paul last year with effusive praise and a day of honor.

ā€œSpringsteen’s music is a source of inspiration for many people in Minnesota, reminding us of the values we hold dear, including kindness, compassion and fairness,ā€ theĀ proclamation signed by Mr. WalzĀ said.

With Mr. Walz expected to lean on his working class appeal as part of the Democratic presidential ticket, it is fitting how strongly he has embraced the bard of the working man.

Though Mr. Springsteen’s music carries wide appeal across the political spectrum (there are few bigger fans than Chris Christie, the Republican former governor of New Jersey), The Boss has long provided a boost to Democrats on the campaign trail,Ā supporting every Democratic nominee since John Kerry. HeĀ forged a deep friendshipĀ with former President Barack Obama andĀ narrated an ad for President Biden.

Former President Donald J. Trump, the Republican nominee and a New York native, has taken to mocking some of Mr. Springsteen’s appearances on behalf of Democrats. Campaigning in Atlanta, Ga., on Saturday,Ā Mr. Trump recalledĀ that Mr. Springsteen appeared at a rally for Hillary Clinton in 2016.

ā€œI’m not a huge fan,ā€ he said of Mr. Springsteen. ā€œI have a bad trait. I only like people that like me.ā€

Finally, has Jake Tapper of CNN ever been to a Springsteen concert?

@jaketapper Those weren’t boos when Springsteen was mentioned. They were chanting ā€œBruuuuceā€ for Bruce’s first name. If you’ve ever been to a Bruce Springsteen concert, you would know that. 😃

@springsteen can you please educate @jaketapper that people scream Bruuuuce and not boo your name when Tim Walz talks about going to your concerts!
