So sad to his hear this. Peter Carmichael was the Robert C. Fluhrer Professor of Civil War Studies and Director of the Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College. He was 58.

Here is his obituary from The Gettysburg Times:

Peter S. Carmichael, 58, passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2024, of a sudden illness. He was surrounded by the love of his family and friends.

The son of Charlotte and Lowell Carmichael, Pete was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on February 23, 1966. He remained a devoted Hoosier throughout his life.

Pete was the beloved husband of Beth Carmichae,l and the loving father of two daughters, Isabel and Cameron. He is also survived by his mother, Charlotte Carmichael; his extended Brian family cousins; his half-sister Kim Jennifer; and his Parreno family. Also surviving are his mother- and father-in-law, Janet and Jack Getz; his brother- and sister-in-law, Christopher and Stephanie Getz; and his four nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Lowell Carmichael.

Pete graduated from Pike High School in 1984 and Indiana University – Purdue University in Indianapolis in 1988. He then earned a PhD in history from Pennsylvania State University. During his studies, Pete spent summers working with the National Park Service in Appomattox, Richmond, and Fredericksburg, Virginia, forging dear friendships across the Civil War community. He met Beth in Fredericksburg, and they were married there in 2003.

Pete started his academic career at Western Carolina University and later taught at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and West Virginia University. He spent the last 15 years on the history faculty at Gettysburg College and as the director of its Civil War Institute. His greatest joys were teaching and mentoring his students. He was also immensely proud of establishing in 2011 the Brian C. Pohanka Internship Program, which provides Gettysburg students with unique summer opportunities to work at National Park sites and museums across the East Coast.

Pete loved Indiana basketball; delighted in conversations about art, music, and current events; and was dedicated to exercising with his CrossFit family. He embraced any opportunity to travel, especially to Europe, and was happiest wandering the streets and museums of Paris and reading in the Luxembourg Gardens. Studying the Civil War era, Southern history, and the lives of historical actors energized him daily.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 27, 2024, at Christ Lutheran Church, 30 Chambersburg Street, in Gettysburg, with Pastor Stephen Herr officiating.
