Brent Leatherwood is back as president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission.

John Fea   |  July 23, 2024

Last night, Brent Leatherwood was fired as the president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC). Or was he?

Today, Leatherwood is back.

The latest:

So what happened in the last 36 hours or so?

On Sunday, Brent Leatherwood said that Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race was an unselfish act. Conservative Southern Baptists and their political allies went nuts because they thought Leatherwood was echoing Democratic talking points. We covered this in detail here and here.

One of the ways Leatherwood weathered the storm of social media attacks against him was to tweet about his anti-Biden/Harris bona fides. Here is what he was tweeting yesterday, just hours before his firing:

What Douthat is getting at here is important. While I understand the President isn’t feeling well, the technology exists to make him available or allow him to more fully explain his decision. The White House should make this a priority right now. https://t.co/xOrSFXrq7K

Most people pay little attention to the Vice President. Historically, it is a bit of an afterthought. Still, VPs often have a record of their own. Given Pres. Biden's decision to end his campaign, VP Harris's record merits examination. We did so here: https://t.co/97yMyk7DbR

— Brent Leatherwood (@LeatherwoodERLC) July 22, 2024

Southern Baptists have been clear in their defense of life and the dignity of the preborn by supporting pregnancy resource centers. As attorney general, Harris attempted to force PRC volunteers and workers to refer patients to abortion providers.

— Brent Leatherwood (@LeatherwoodERLC) July 22, 2024

Southern Baptists have always stood up for religious liberty. Harris supports the Equality Act, which would be the most extreme attack on religious liberty ever considered by Congress.https://t.co/ONmoc5Wkkm

— Brent Leatherwood (@LeatherwoodERLC) July 22, 2024

Needless to say, this track record is alarming. Read more from the @ERLC here.https://t.co/97yMyk7DbR

Sadly, these seemed like the tweets of a guy trying to save his job. By going after Harris this way, Leatherwood, in his final hours as president of the ERLC, was desperately trying to convince his detractors that he is not a mouthpiece for Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, or the Democratic Party.

Last night, the following statement was issued by the ERLC:

NASHVILLE, Tenn., July 22, 2024 —The executive committee of the board of trustees for the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention has issued the following statement.Ā

In accordance with our bylaws, the executive committee has removed Brent Leatherwood as president. Further details, as well as plans for the transition, will be provided at our September board meeting. Until then, the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees will assume directional responsibility for carrying out the ministry assignments for the ERLC.Ā

Leatherwood was out. Here is how people responded:

Russell Moore was apoplectic:

Shameful and disgraceful. A great Christian man who lived through his children barely surviving a school shooting.

Southern Baptists, how much more of this are you going to let go on?

You cannot pretend not to see what is happening in your name.https://t.co/omsVUeWaRj

— Russell Moore (@drmoore) July 23, 2024

Karen Swallow Prior:

The Lord has given the SBC over to its sinful desires.

May he have mercy on them and on us all.

— Karen Swallow Prior (Notorious KSP at The Priory) (@KSPrior) July 23, 2024

Megan Basham:

These are the media figures boosting @drmoore’s angry comments about the @erlc. Understand, they don’t like to see their primary vehicle for influencing the Southern Baptist Convention slip away. pic.twitter.com/BiHajyietH

— Megan Basham (@megbasham) July 23, 2024

Clint Pressley, president of the Southern Baptist Convention:

As Southern Baptists we should all care about our entities and their wellbeing. Let’s pray for Brent, for the ERLC, its employees, and their trustees.

— Clint Pressley (@pastorclint) July 23, 2024

Tom Ascol thinks it was a “righteous act” to remove Leatherwood:

Imagine what can be…if only we could be unburdened by what has been. https://t.co/P5nTnO2lxL pic.twitter.com/HeobMkqeRK

— Tom Ascol @tomascol (@tomascol) July 22, 2024

A Russell Moore wannabe whose noteworthy achievements include working to suppress the trans shooter’s manifesto, lobbying for gun control laws, and flacking for Biden and Kamala. All on your tithe dollars.

The ERLC’s board clearly did the right thing. https://t.co/z5FxbN2gt7

— Rod D. Martin (@RodDMartin) July 23, 2024

This guy already had a replacement lined-up:

The next move is to make @andrewtwalk the next president. He would bring the organization back on mission and relevance to the SBC. https://t.co/LpNa6q3WNV

One more:

How you KNOW kicking Leatherwood off the island was the right thing to do in 4 pictures. šŸ‘ pic.twitter.com/yNzewwaHV4

— Adam Page (@AdamPage85) July 23, 2024

And then, this morning, we learn this:

BREAKING: Brent Leatherwood back as president of the @ERLC. pic.twitter.com/xl88l2xxLJ

— Liam Adams (@liamsadams) July 23, 2024

And this:

I am a trustee at @ERLC. Our president @LeatherwoodERLC was NOT fired yesterday. See this press release. Brent deserves countless apologies for this error and all the assumptions that came with it. He has proven to be a faithful leader and man of integrity time and again. pic.twitter.com/bUd0w3SbER

— Eric Costanzo (@eric_costanzo) July 23, 2024

Leatherwood is back:

I deeply appreciate everyone who has reached out, especially our trustees who were absolutely bewildered at what took place yesterday and jumped in to set the record straight.

More to come. https://t.co/QfJpbFAtkM

— Brent Leatherwood (@LeatherwoodERLC) July 23, 2024

But the real question is this: What the heck is happening in the Southern Baptist Convention?

People have some thoughts:

This is a complete embarrassment for the SBC. @erlc trustees need to come clean with the churches that own the entity. It’s time for transparency—which churches have been requesting for years. pic.twitter.com/dmSbW8gMtq

— Tom Ascol @tomascol (@tomascol) July 23, 2024

BREAKING:

Brent Leatherwood reinstated as ERLC President and ERLC Chairman Kevin Smith resigns

The current incompetence of the ERLC leadership cannot be overstated

Southern Baptists deserve better pic.twitter.com/d0dOn4Fq4y

— William Wolfe šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø (@William_E_Wolfe) July 23, 2024

No way!

I despise the @ERLC as much as anyone, know how incompetent the org is.

But this? This is unbelievably incompetent, even for them.

And imagine being @LeatherwoodERLC, fighting to keep this job after the internet blew up celebrating your firing. šŸ˜‚

— Jeff Wright (@merelyjwright) July 23, 2024

The Chair of the Executive Committee of the ERLC purported to act for the whole EC when he fired Brent. But he was acting unilaterally.

Yes, Brent needs to go but it must to be done properly, in order. So Brent is back (for now)

Much of the SBC is run this way. Disgraceful. pic.twitter.com/RVFL1L9ueT

— Joshua Abbotoy šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø (@Byzness) July 23, 2024

If we didn’t have an ERLC, or this ERLC, this wouldn’t be happening.

The SBC should #defundtheERLC until further notice. https://t.co/8ibVrNyPoI

— DavidSchrock (@DavidSchrock) July 23, 2024

As always I’m thankful for Brent’s leadership and faithfulness. We should all be praying for him as he continues to lead the ERLC. https://t.co/5h9D4yYt3N

— Eric Mayo (@ejmayo15) July 23, 2024

Russell Moore and his friends at CNN and the New York Times are still setting the agenda for the ERLC. More to come but it’s time to abolish the ERLC. It is an infiltrated institution that believes it is accountable to no one. https://t.co/K1hziEBtxG

— Megan Basham (@megbasham) July 23, 2024

This action almost guarantees Never Trumper Brent Leatherwood will remain as head of the ERLC through the election. Huge win for lifelong Democrat Russell Moore. https://t.co/uIPgm628AL

— Capstone Report (@CapstoneReport) July 23, 2024

Chaos and incompetence run rampant in the @erlc and its closest ally, the Democratic Party. https://t.co/uboX82b5H7

— Ginna Cross (@GinnaCross) July 23, 2024

What in the world is going on with the trustees of the @ERLC

This is an utter disaster.

The trustee system of the SBC is irrevocably broken.

I’m glad @LeatherwoodERLC remains in his position, but the trustees of the ERLC need to be vacated.

Complete insanity.

— Garet Robinson (@garetrobinson) July 23, 2024

The legislation Leatherwood opposed wasn't about "jailing women who choose abortion," but about holding accountable all who willingly participate in the murder of an unborn child. The law should hold each accountable according to the level of his/her involvement. He should've… https://t.co/0ISskqULvW

What a mess!
