Evangelical roundup: Members of the Southern Baptist Convention turn on one of their own:

John Fea   |  July 22, 2024

Brent Leatherhood, head of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission

Evangelicals–left, right, and center–have now had a chance to sleep on America’s new political reality. We posted yesterday on their initial reaction to Biden’s withdrawal from the race. Let’s see what they are saying today:

President of the Southern Baptist Convention:

Sounds right. https://t.co/O3O8apHh6h

— Clint Pressley (@pastorclint) July 21, 2024

Warren Throckmorton:

So much projection. https://t.co/5ubAMPtSYc

— Warren Throckmorton – Telling Jefferson Lies 🇺🇦 (@wthrockmorton) July 22, 2024

Activist Jemar Tisby:

"Selfless and patriotic"–how unlike the GOP presidential nominee. https://t.co/aamuQx3661

— JemarTisby.Substack.com. (@JemarTisby) July 21, 2024

Southern Baptist professor:

If this is true, we are in a constitutional crisis. The 25th amendment must be invoked to remove him from office.

According to this report, the president’s brother says that the president is leaving the race because of his health.

People are really upset about the statement from Brent Leatherwood of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission.

“President Biden’s announcement is clearly the correct decision … an acknowledgment of both one’s own limits and political reality.”

Read more of @LeatherwoodERLC’s thoughts on President Biden’s decision in his op-ed for @BaptistPress:https://t.co/P62SoMBate

— ERLC (@ERLC) July 21, 2024

On the left is the New York Times editorial board. On the right is the @ERLC. Why do they sound almost the same? pic.twitter.com/Ug8qiwCksy

— Megan Basham (@megbasham) July 21, 2024

“Not only is this a historic decision, it is the right decision for our nation … Despite what some partisans will say, to walk away from power is a selfless act – the kind that has become all too rare in our culture.” — @LeatherwoodERLC https://t.co/SqAGZLb64N

— ERLC (@ERLC) July 21, 2024

Now watch them turn on one of their own:

This is one of the most dishonest and cynical political statements I have ever seen. No one believes that Joe Biden dropped out due to selflessness. It’s almost obscene to utter something so discrediting in a moment like this.

— Megan Basham (@megbasham) July 21, 2024

Brent Leatherwood is an embarrassment to the denomination. He is squishy on core issues of the faith and he seems to value looking nice over actually pursuing holiness and righteousness. I would prefer to have Joel Olsteen lead the ERLC because at least Joel is pretty obvious…

— Christopher Calvin Reid (@ReidFirm) July 21, 2024

If you want to know why @LeatherwoodERLC would perpetuate such lie, you need to order and read @megbasham's coming book. Then you will fully understand. https://t.co/Q0rLEb8u7U pic.twitter.com/b9NckZzgW8

— Tom Buck (Five Point Buck) (@TomBuck) July 21, 2024

Why does the ERLC prop up Democrat lies that Biden “selflessly” chose to drop out rather than was pushed out by the donor class when they could no longer cover up his mental unfitness?

My book explains. Preorder now to have on release day, July 30.https://t.co/BsoOGJymGY https://t.co/VfTHXV1xHx

— Megan Basham (@megbasham) July 21, 2024

Personally, I am praying that Mr. Leatherwood would make the same selfless decision at the ERLC… https://t.co/hmn2YWvzKN

— Ryan McAllister ن 🌲 (@RyanTMcAllister) July 21, 2024

This is ridiculous. https://t.co/P5nTnO2Tnj

— Tom Ascol @tomascol (@tomascol) July 22, 2024

Despite what some partisans will say, nothing in the record indicates Mr. Biden has “walk(ed) away from power” as “a selfless act.”

Nothing. https://t.co/asJEk1oUAk

— Mike Stone (@PastorMikeStone) July 21, 2024

And people wonder why we say the @ERLC is worthless, doesn't represent its SBC constituents, and should be abolished! https://t.co/Q0rLEb8u7U

— Tom Buck (Five Point Buck) (@TomBuck) July 21, 2024

Just like the debate was the beginning of the end for Biden, I think the ERLC statement tonight was the beginning of the end for Brent Leatherwood

The SBC President counter signaled him

And there are SBC pastors so squishy I have them blocked that are expressing frustration…

— William Wolfe 🇺🇸 (@William_E_Wolfe) July 21, 2024

Brent Leatherwood and the entire ERLC are nothing but idiotic clowns https://t.co/oNs9lvhvC5

— Tyler Siedell (@imtylersiedell) July 21, 2024

Once again the ERLC proving itself a sham and a shame. Parroting dem talking points and cheerleading a lib coup, all the while giving it the cover of selflessness. Trustees should help Brent Leatherwood step away from power—by firing him. https://t.co/5gfqOcC2bA

— Rhett Burns (@rhett_burns) July 21, 2024

I’m not supposed to hate. But I may hate Brent Leatherwood.

— Hunter (@DoItTruett) July 21, 2024

Thank you for posting this now. Our church has a Business Meeting next week. I will be making a Motion to exclude the ERLC from our Cooperative Program contributions.

Unbelievable.

Looking forward to the Motion from @tomascol that will be made in 11 months.

— Eric Beal (@LawyerBeal) July 21, 2024

I’m beginning to think that the good folks at the ERLC are nearly as compulsive with their lying as the Biden administration.

— Melissa the Homemaking 🏠Cheapskate đź’° (@BiblicalBeauty) July 21, 2024

And now back to our regular programming:

Albert Mohler:

What will this mean for Nov. 5? Frankly, it’s hard to imagine the nation being excited about a Kamala Harris presidency. Her campaign in the 2020 cycle ended as an embarrassment, but Biden chose her and, as his post Sunday indicated, he stands by her now.

The bottom line as Biden departs the race is that he has now done what conservatives predicted all along. He will go down in history as the man who made the leftward leap of the Democratic Party possible. He was elected as good old Joe from Scranton, the working man’s Democratic candidate. He had played that role (awkwardly and often embarrassingly) for more than three decades in the Senate. He then served as Barack Obama’s vice president, only to be snubbed after eight years of loyal service when Obama pushed him out of the way and supported Hillary Clinton in the 2016 race. He fought back in 2020 and gained the nomination as the only hope for Democrats to unite the party, but all along the Democrats assured themselves that Biden would be the bridge to a far more ideologically liberal party.

Understand clearly that the Democratic Party is going to lurch far to the left with this generational shift. With Biden out of the way, it will be full steam ahead. And Biden bears responsibility for making it all happen. The Democratic left had one final role for Biden to play, and he played it. They finally decided that he played it for too long and so the gig is up. Brace yourselves for what is to come.

And watch the parable unfold as President Joe Biden rather bitterly leaves the political stage. Exit, stage left.

Christianity Today Podcaster Mike Cosper:

Hear me — I get that this enormously consequential decision was difficult. It would have been far more admirable six weeks or six months ago.

— Mike Cosper (@MikeCosper) July 21, 2024

MAGA worship leader calls an “immediate press conference” to fight the “powers and principalities” of the Democratic Party:

🚨Emergency Press Conference: What the heck is going on?

My thoughts on the current political landscape: https://t.co/eGhACvbvuJ

— Sean Feucht (@seanfeucht) July 22, 2024

Huck being Huck:

Joe has been Executive Chef & Kamala is his pastry chef. Getting him out of kitchen is fine but the food on the menu still makes you sick.

— Gov. Mike Huckabee (@GovMikeHuckabee) July 21, 2024

Shane Claiborne:

Biden dropped out. And I won a few bets.

I just hope whoever our next President is will end the genocide in Gaza and stand up for the life and dignity of every human being. Some things are not about Left and Right… they are about right and wrong.

I will vote for the person I think is most committed to love and compassion and peace and justice, especially for those most vulnerable.

I don’t know who that is yet. I know I will not be voting for Trump and I wasn’t excited about Biden. For now I will continue to put my hope in Jesus, and in November I’ll vote for the person I think will do the least amount of damage to the world.

Megachurch pastor Greg Laurie:

President Biden has now stepped down and will no longer be running for the Presidency. It was only a week ago there was an assassination attempt on former President Trump. A lot of uncertainty. I reflected on that bit last night at the Harvest Crusade. pic.twitter.com/JQfwrCKdab

— Greg Laurie (@greglaurie) July 21, 2024

Writer and radio host Eric Metaxas:

Could ANYONE be worse than Kamala? And why would the Clintons have endorsed her except to spite Barak Obama and Nancy Pelosi? Will they now fight for their own candidates, like Michelle Obama or Gavin Newsome? This is going to be interesting.

— Eric Metaxas (@ericmetaxas) July 21, 2024

What lunacy! Can you imagine thinking it was somehow selfless? He was forced out, almost at the point of a gun. God help the @ERLC and the American Church. https://t.co/pb0ZlTjfuX

— Eric Metaxas (@ericmetaxas) July 21, 2024

Tim Barton, president of Wallbuilders:

Charlie Kirk:

Five white men and one white woman are being considered for Kamala’s running mate. There can only be so much diversity in the Democrat Party! pic.twitter.com/ZZUSWkZ2Cp

— Charlie Kirk (@charliekirk11) July 22, 2024

Right-wing radio host Todd Starnes with the conspiracy theory:

Something smells.

Why would President Biden announce such a momentous and historic decision on a Sunday afternoon on a social media platform? The letter he posted was not written on White House stationary. And his signature appeared to be photoshopped. Also, Biden’s signature was underlined and typically he does not underline his name.

His staff only found out once the message had been posted on X. And Cabinet members were notified by the Chief of Staff — not Biden.

The last time the public saw Biden he feebly walked down the stairs of Air Force One and had to be physically assisted into the presidential limo. He has not been seen in public since.

How do we know Biden wrote that letter? And how do we know that Biden posted the letter on his X page? There wasn’t even an official White House photograph of the moment.

His brother, Frank Biden, told CBS News that health “absolutely” was the deciding factor in the decision. And then he told CBS “Selfishly, I will have him back to enjoy whatever time he has left.”

Is President Biden still alive? Is he awake and alert? Is he in command of his faculties? With respect, we need to see proof of life.

Justin Giboney:

Christian leaders must be careful in this very polarized election.

They can’t be so in the bag for one candidate that they refuse to be honest about the candidate’s faults.

They can’t get so caught up in the election that they’re doing more fear mongering than inspiring.

I don’t know enough about the SBC to comment as anything more than an interested outsider, but if the ERLC is the place the convention has committed to informed and serious reflection about religious liberty, public policy, and ” the moral demands of the gospel,” then the recurring pattern of rising up in outrage against it by prominent sections of the denomination should occasion at least a moment of sober self-reflection.

It is hard to see the SBC as a Christ focused conference with all the partisan anger of names of people in an evangelical denomination speak using vile descriptions when speaking of Mr Leatherwood.
When someone makes a decision such as President Biden made. There is likely not just one factor leading to that decision. He did not rusch into the decision as some would have liked. If he had the same people who have colorful was to express their disdain; thought he waited too long and should have decided sooner. Others launched in to why they are unhappy he recommended that VP Harris be the runner for Runner for President.
Pressure or not; President Biden had the right to consider his options. A lot of people called for him to step down. How many of them actually addressed this directly with Biden. Others, who have served with him and whom he has trust probably advised him. I was disappointed with his decision but as he made this decision, I’d like to think he did it for reasons beyoun his personal reason and did look out for the common good. He had to struggle with his pride, but who doesn’t? In the end, he decided and made the announcement through social media. I rather liked that. I heard about it when one of my daughters texted. I liked that too. With social media, his announcement could be heard and a small sliver of time before the media, and anyone else could start tearing his decision apart, brag, sell books. Considering all the praying about this decision, I find it easier to stop looking at the candidates, and spend more time considering that challenges of this time.

Do Southern Baptist pastors learn how to think? Or, do they learn knee jerk reactions in seminary?
