Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council thinks so:
Sadly, this is the dominant form of evangelical political engagement these days. Politics as spiritual warfare.
Historians like to talk about “contingency”–the choices people make that shape the future. There were other political approaches–deeply rooted in Christian faith–that evangelicals might have followed. I hope to highlight some of them soon. Stay tuned.
It cut Jesus to the core when he was accused of being in league with the Devil. This is when he said that a house divided cannot stand. If we are going to get our house united it won’t be because we all think alike and want to solve problems in the same way. It will be possible if we resist demonization of the other and recognize our common humanity. Just this morning I read a quote from John Wesley: “Though we cannot think alike, may we not love alike? May we not be of one heart, though we are not of one opinion?” Demonization may be the work of Satan.
