Eight pro-Trump U.S. Senators will oppose all Biden nominees and major Democratic legislation

John Fea   |  May 31, 2024

Mike Lee (R-UT), J.D. Vance (R-OH), Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), Eric Schmitt (R-MO), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Rick Scott (R-FL), Roger Marshall (R-KS), and Marco Rubio (R-FL) just released the following statement.

The White House has made a mockery of the rule of law and fundamentally altered our politics in un-American ways. As a Senate Republican conference, we are unwilling to aid and abet this White House in its project to tear this country apart. To that end, we will not 1) allow any increase to non-security related funding for this administration, or any appropriations bill which fund partisan lawfare; 2) vote to confirm this administration’s political and judicial appointees; and 3) allow expedited consideration and passage of Democrat legislation or authorities that are not directly relevant to the safety of the American people.

A couple of thoughts:

  1. I assume the “mockery of the rule of law” remark relates to the Trump hush money conviction. I am not sure what Joe Biden had to do with this trial.
  2. The statement is not specific about how Biden “fundamentally altered our politics in un-American ways.” Of course some would say that our politics were “altered in un-American ways” when Donald Trump came down the escalator to announce his candidacy in 2015.
  3. The statement is not specific about how Biden is trying to “tear this country apart.” (See the last sentence of point #2 above.)
  4. Have these Senators ever voted to “confirm this administration’s political and judicial appointees?”
  5. Notice the use of “Democrat” to the describe the opposition party. See historian Lawrence Glickman on this.

See how all 100 U.S. Senators responded to the Trump conviction here.

Truly an awful GOP statement. It’s called “Congress” because those in it are supposed to come together and discuss, not boycott.

This is why the Founders were afraid of political parties. Members of Congress must have the whole country in view, not a party, a base (whatever that means) or some other subset of the United States. These Senators are only a small part of the Senate.
