Special Evangelical roundup: The Trump verdict

John Fea   |  May 30, 2024

Donald Trump was convicted on 34 felonies today. It’s only been a little more than an hour, but there are already plenty of early initial reactions from American evangelical Christians:

Warren Throckmorton:

Justice.

— Warren Throckmorton – Telling Jefferson Lies 🇺🇦 (@wthrockmorton) May 30, 2024

Ryan Helfenbein of Liberty University’s Standing for Freedom Center:

Pray for America 🇺🇸

“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”
Proverbs 16:18

— Ryan Helfenbein (@RHelfenbein) May 30, 2024

Worship leader Sean Feucht:

Trump just EASILY won the 2024 National election. Congratulations Mr. President👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

— Sean Feucht (@seanfeucht) May 30, 2024

Im just grateful to be in Montana today during this absolute madness happening to our country. 🙏🏽🇺🇸

PRAY FOR AMERICA.

— Sean Feucht (@seanfeucht) May 30, 2024

Russell Moore and responses to Moore:

The question is what it has always been- fit or unfit. And the answer was obvious all along. Character matters, still.

— Russell Moore (@drmoore) May 30, 2024

Amazing. You were so silent when Roe v Wade was overturned. But so quick to celebrate this?

Disgusting.

— William Wolfe 🇺🇸 (@William_E_Wolfe) May 30, 2024

Like someone once said…

“Russell Moore is a political operative.” https://t.co/Wmr7srNL1h

— Tom Buck (Five Point Buck) (@TomBuck) May 30, 2024

William Wolfe:

Red Wave coming in November

Trump should win in a landslide

And I’m going to do everything I can to help make that happen

As should every freedom-loving Christian in America

— William Wolfe 🇺🇸 (@William_E_Wolfe) May 30, 2024

Mike Johnson:

My statement on President Trump trial verdict:

Today is a shameful day in American history. Democrats cheered as they convicted the leader of the opposing party on ridiculous charges, predicated on the testimony of a disbarred, convicted felon. This was a purely political…

— Speaker Mike Johnson (@SpeakerJohnson) May 30, 2024

Denny Burk:

"What happened in that room comes at a cost. It comes at a cost of the rule of law."

-Jonathan Turley, George Washington University Law School pic.twitter.com/lhr5tuDUNE

— Denny Burk (@DennyBurk) May 30, 2024

Mike Huckabee:

Sad day for justice. For America. Joe Biden has successfully broken America.
More than ever, @realDonaldTrump must be re-elected. We can't have a government that targets political opponents in court. God help us!

— Gov. Mike Huckabee (@GovMikeHuckabee) May 30, 2024

Equally sad than a travesty of a "trial"-people celebrating this sham of a trial with a compromised, corrupt judge, a DA who manufactured charges. If this is what Dems want the courts and our country to become, they will rue the day.

— Gov. Mike Huckabee (@GovMikeHuckabee) May 30, 2024

Shane Claiborne:

Guilty on all counts. pic.twitter.com/jgo1W6wkMc

— Shane Claiborne (@ShaneClaiborne) May 30, 2024

Albert Mohler:

Well, it’s going to be a long night in the recording studio and in the writing process. There is a lot to talk about here, and incredibly important questions will have to be confronted. But let’s all pray for our beloved country at this critical moment.

— Albert Mohler (@albertmohler) May 30, 2024

Gary Bauer:

A disgusting travesty of justice!https://t.co/TYYGpG187I

— Eric Metaxas (@ericmetaxas) May 30, 2024

Charlie Kirk:

We must win. We must defeat these savages. Stand with Trump. Take back America. Get to work. pic.twitter.com/Mzs4eS9PdR

— Charlie Kirk (@charliekirk11) May 30, 2024

I support Trump MORE after this crap.

We must win.

— Charlie Kirk (@charliekirk11) May 30, 2024

Today's sham verdict shows Democrats are still seeking retribution from Trump ruining Hillary's glass ceiling party in 2016. They started this vile cycle, and they act shocked and appalled when Trump tells us he will be our retribution.

Stay peaceful, our revenge is coming.

— Charlie Kirk (@charliekirk11) May 30, 2024

I’ll try to add more as they come in.

UPDATE, May 30, 2024 at 7:07pm

Robert Jeffress has more to say. Actually, Trump was convicted by a jury:

.@realDonaldTrump was not convicted because of the evidence but because of his rising poll numbers which are scaring the left spitless.

— Dr. Robert Jeffress (@robertjeffress) May 30, 2024

Jenna Ellis:

Two things can be true at once:

1. This is a political verdict
2. The GOP shouldn’t play rigged games

We should have nominated DeSantis and we still should nominate DeSantis. https://t.co/slV725sTGa

— Paula White-Cain (@Paula_White) May 30, 2024

James Dobson:

This is a tragic day for America. The guilty verdict issued hours ago against former President Donald Trump is a clear abuse of our justice system. This politically motivated and stacked trial is what we have come to expect in communist China—not in the United States of America. pic.twitter.com/lRMMcANz0J

A response to Russel Moore:

And where was/is your righteous indignation over the manifest corruption of Biden and Hillary? Have you even said one positive word about the overturning of Roe v Wade yet? What about your lies about Mike Stone?

Character matters indeed.

— Justin Peters (@JustinPetersMin) May 30, 2024

And another response to Moore:

You’re the editor-in-chief of a publication promotes progressive “Christianity.”

You’re not credible, sir.

— Samuel Sey (@SlowToWrite) May 31, 2024

James Lankford:

Millions of Americans’ believe our justice system was weaponized, from start to finish for political gain, including deciding sentencing days before the biggest campaign event—the RNC convention in Milwaukee.

— Josh Hawley (@HawleyMO) May 30, 2024

This is America under Democrat rule: prosecuting political opponents whether it’s pro-life Americans or a former President

— Josh Hawley (@HawleyMO) May 30, 2024

Ralph Reed:

Dwight McKissic:

I miss the days in evangelicalism where the motto was: “Character Matters”. I miss the days where they touted: “the

As a convicted felon by a jury, and assuming that the mildest penalty would be probation that would last beyond the November election, will Trump be allowed to vote in Florida?

  2. Richard says

So-called evangelicals and their support for Trump. How sad.

  3. Ron says

    May 30, 2024 at 6:46 pm

None of these Christian Trump defenders deny any facts in the case. He paid off a porn star so that voters would not hear her story just after the Access Hollywood tape was made public. Then he and his associates hid the payment as legal fees. This is the person God wants us to vote into our presidency? Even if the trial was politically motivated by the New York District Attorney it had to be argued before a jury that the defense helped to choose. The prosecution evidently did a much better job in making its case. Isn’t that how our justice system is supposed to work? Has anyone been able to point out Biden’s fingerprints in having the case move forward? Calling something a sham does not make it a sham.

  4. Gregory says

    May 30, 2024 at 7:42 pm

As near as I can tell from something that I read a half hour ago and lost the link, Trump can vote in Florida as a convicted felon if he’s not incarcerated during voting. As he was convicted in New York, his eligibility to vote in Florida depends upon the laws where he was convicted. In New York, you can vote as a convicted felon if you’re not incarcerated during the election.

  5. Gregory says

For some reason, another white-collar criminal who once held high office, Sprio Agnew, came to mind.
