Donald Trump and the Electoral College, circa 1999

John Fea   |  May 18, 2024

As most of you know, Donald Trump has never won a popular vote for President of the United States. In 2016, he lost the popular vote to Hillary Clinton by nearly three million votes. In 2020, he lost the popular to Joe Biden by more than seven million votes. It is likely that Trump will lose the popular vote again in 2024.

Trump won the presidency in 2016, and has a chance to win it again in 2024, because of the Electoral College. Again, none of this is news.

I was recently reading old newspapers and found a 1999 piece (see above) from syndicated columnist Betsy McCauhey Ross. (I read it in the October 10, 1999 edition of the Lexington Herald-Leader.) It shows that Trump was banking on the Electoral College back then as well. Notice the references to Trump as a potential “political kingmaker.”

Since the Electoral College does not function the way it was originally intentioned to function, maybe it is time to do away with it. It was meant for a time without political parties.
