Evangelical roundup for May 16, 2024

John Fea   |  May 16, 2024

What is happening in Evangelical land?

Evangelicals prefer to be defined religiously, not politically.

Two Christian Right representatives support aid to both Israel and Ukraine.

World Relief celebrates International Families Day:

This International Families Day, we reflect on the families displaced and separated by violence, poverty and injustice — both in the U.S. and across the world.

The National Association of Evangelicals champions creation care:

At the NAE, we believe that creation care is a vital part of our Christian witness.

Are evangelicals still evangelizing?

Tim Keller’s ministry to Africa

Beth Moore is praying for the Knicks:

There are some things we don’t see coming in our lives of faith like, for instance, today I just flat out prayed for the Knicks game tonight & my man Jalen Brunson. You don’t have to tell me there are actual important things to pray about. But it’s not like God only answers a…

Shane is still chopping guns:

We’ve been chopping up guns like crazy and making all kinds of stuff at the shop. Check out our website – we have a bunch of new things for sale and will add more soon! https://t.co/8l9fXgPgQ3

Venezuelan evangelicals vs. child abuse.

More on the PCA’s cancellation of David French.

Justin Giboney on Lindsay Graham on the atomic bomb:

A U.S. Senator still believes it was right to drop nuclear bombs on two Japanese cities.

Very little regard for certain human lives.

A longtime disciple of Francis Schaeffer on his mentor’s legacy.

Blast from the past:

Is Eric Metaxas the new Francis Schaeffer?:

"[Francis] Schaeffer’s book indicted the evangelical leadership class for abandoning historic Christianity in a quest for cultural acceptance… " SOUND FAMILIAR? Please share. https://t.co/QMfkSCnqNl pic.twitter.com/ltw6epgrTv

Some Brazilian evangelicals blame flooding on Madonna’s Celebration Tour.

Robert Jeffress is hosting a Fox & Friends:

.@foxandfriends is coming to First Dallas THIS Friday! Tune in to the whole program on @FoxNews Channel from 5-8am CT for a fun morning of recreation sports and breakfast with Fox at First! pic.twitter.com/8RexRCYQAG

The National Association of Evangelicals, The Trinity Forum, and Sojourners are participating in a conference on “practicing civic discipleship.’ The American Family Association is not happy about it.

I’ve been debunking this Rick Green’s claim for more than a decade.

Over and over again, Christian nationalists spread blatant falsehoods about the Founding Era and the Founding Fathers, prompting us to continually ask why, if their position is true, do they have to keep lying to try and “prove” it? https://t.co/cXGBEwjLV5

— Right Wing Watch (@RightWingWatch) May 14, 2024

Now THIS is Christian nationalism:

During a recent sermon, Christian nationalist pastor Joel Webbon said Americans are too cowardly and dumb to govern themselves and therefore "must be governed" by a Christian leader who will force everyone to "at least … pretend to be Christian." https://t.co/pjAMdavndj https://t.co/hzniooJDjh pic.twitter.com/gLUzVdnHBp

When you lose Jenna Ellis:

When I find myself agreeing with Mitt Romney…. That’s how far the GOP has fallen. https://t.co/oSUHWFDEIA

Liberty University is really milking the student unrest on university campuses. Ryan Helfenbein, the head of the Standing for Freedom Center, says that they are teaching Liberty students to not be victims. To what extent is Liberty University the mirror image of what is happening at Columbia and elsewhere?:

In recent weeks, @LibertyU has been making headlines for standing out amongst other universities. @RHelfenbein joined @AlisonOAN on @OANN to discuss what makes LU special. pic.twitter.com/Iu8SXbY2BN

— Standing for Freedom Center (@freedomcenterlu) May 14, 2024

And after Ryan Helfenbein goes on pro-Trump OAN to brag about how Liberty is developing thinkers (see above video), the Standing for Freedom Center website publishes this sloppy and generally incoherent historical piece comparing the French Revolution with “hate speech.”

Tulsi Gabbard tells Christian Broadcasting Network’s David Brody that the Democrats are on the side of evil:

NEW: Tulsi Gabard tells me the Democrat Party is on the side of evil. Christian Zionism 101:

Today marks 76 years of Israel’s independence. America's future is intertwined with Israel’s. How we respond to the role God has given us to stand with Israel in this moment may determine our nation’s future. pic.twitter.com/ImtVn5O5ZW

Trump-loving court evangelical Gary Bauer says he can’t trust anything BIDEN says:

Except for the Capitol Police on January 6?:

My deepest gratitude to the selfless men and women who wear a badge to protect and serve—and to those who have given their life in the line of duty. In this age of moral decay, lawlessness, and cultural chaos the need has never been greater and the job harder for law enforcement… pic.twitter.com/0AtmnF6Vpw

John Hagee has some words for Joe Biden:

President Biden claims he is a lifelong friend of the Jewish people and a Zionist. But these are empty words of cover for his lifelong war against the Jews. He has worked at break-neck speed to undermine Israel. America is flirting with the wrath of God. Wake up America! pic.twitter.com/kCeBaKxkX5

Al Mohler says Jerry Seinfeld is a “nihilist.”

Is Owen going soft?:

In their book on Christian Nationalism, Andrew Torba and Andrew Isker call for husbands to "take dominion" of their wives–but Scripture NOWHERE teaches this.

Christianity Today’s Emily Belz is covering the trial of Christian billionaire Bill Hwang. Daniel Silliman tweets some of the coverage:

What do you read at your trial when you're a Christian billionaire with a Christian investment firm accused of tens of billions of dollars in security fraud?

Bonhoeffer.

Is Taylor Swift the “demon god of Molech?”:

A "church" with services dedicated to Taylor Swift has rainbow flags outside and "fights for gender equality and women's rights (abortion)."

This is not a church. This is a shrine to the demon god of Molech. https://t.co/DnrB9QiKmq

A Texas megachurch tried to manipulate a local traffic study. Dishonesty and corruption in the name of Christ.
