A very busy Martin Luther King Jr. Day

John Fea   |  January 15, 2024

I can’t remember such a busy–at least in terms of news–January 15th. I’m on a research trip in a southern city that is treating a few inches of snow as if it was some kind of natural disaster, so it looks like I’ll be sitting back and taking it all in.

Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. I hope you have off from work. Take some time and read something about King or the Civil Rights Movement. Here are a few suggestions from Current.

It’s also Iowa caucuses night. The 2024 presidential election season has officially begun. The story is the weather. How many Iowans will come out to caucus tonight in sub-zero temperatures? The last Des Moines Register poll has Donald Trump with a huge lead. The real battle is for second place: Nikki Haley vs. Ron DeSantis. Last week I offered a possible post-Iowa scenario.

It appears that Trump is getting worried about Haley even as he claimed that Jimmy Carter is a “happy man” now that his wife Rosalynn is dead. Trump’s victory margin tonight will be telling. Will he get more than 50% of the votes in Iowa?

NFL fans are looking forward to two games today. The Steelers-Bills game was postponed from yesterday due to a snowstorm in Buffalo. The Eagles and Bucs play tonight in Tampa. I am a football fan, but I am also saddened that for most Americans these games are the most important events of the day.

Stay tuned.
