Tonight is the second presidential primary debate. Donald Trump will not be there. He really doesn’t have to be there. He has a massive lead in the polls. Why would any political adviser suggest that the former president attend this debate?
Right now, the other GOP candidates need to lay aside self-interest and ambition and do what they can to save the country from Trump. What if they all used tonight’s debate to go after Trump instead of promoting themselves and their candidacies? What if they talked about his impeachments, his indictments, his legal troubles, his business fraud, his immorality, and his narcissism. Two hours of non-stop Trump? What have they got to lose? (OK, Vivek Ramaswamy may have the VP slot to lose).
Tonight the GOP should unify to take Trump down and then see which candidate rises to get the nomination between now and March.
I know it won’t happen, but one can dream of a world in which the fate of the nation is more important than political ambition. While it may be unbecoming for a historian to say such a thing, I find myself more and more drawn to articles with headlines such as this.
