Why evangelicals still need Jonathan Edwards.

The World Evangelical Alliance co-sponsors a UN human rights forum organized by the Islamic Republic.

The DeSantis campaign dropped $95,000 to attend and advertise at Bob Vander Plaats Family Leadership Summit in Iowa last month. Apparently this is the going rate to get on Vander Plaat’s stage.

Rick Warren on hypocrisy:

One way to spot a real believer vs a hypocrite:

Real ones get upset by how often WE fail to display God’s 10 Commandments in our OWN lives.

Hypocrites get more upset by how OTHERS fail to display them in public areas.

YOU can display them by how you act, talk & treat others. pic.twitter.com/UyIvUmo7iC

Shane is at the Parliament of the World Religions:

Absolutely thrilled to be part of the Parliament of the World’s Religions — joining thousands of folks from all over the world this week in Chicago. An 80-year-old evangelical on why Trump is best for America.

Disgraced megachurch pastor Mark Driscoll on the Charlie Kirk show: “Everybody who’s coming out of Bible college, seminary, everybody who’s coming out of some sort of established political party is just a neutered, compromised beta-male. And we need more Elijahs.” More here:

I really enjoyed sitting down with Mark Driscoll. I don't know how anyone who loves the Lord and the Word doesn’t like him. One of the best interviews we’ve done in a long time – listen! pic.twitter.com/s2LChONcRY

Is Christian music “rotting“?

Blame it on egalitarian women (with a response from Beth Moore):

Tom, I know you did not just blame Aimee Byrd for a pastor’s adultery. If he promoted the book at all, he could’ve had a personal stake in it, using it to publicly reframe a relationship rightly raising eyebrows. Somehow always gotta be a woman to blame for a pastor’s downfall.

Social justice is not biblical because it calls on government to do something. Allie Beth Stuckey may want to read more about, for example, how the church and localities failed to address Jim Crow. Yes, the government had to intervene on the side of biblical justice. Frankly, it is sad this is the best the world’s largest Christian university in the world, Liberty University, can offer on Christian political engagement.

Read the Standing for Freedom at Liberty University twitter account and then reflect on whether “spreading the Gospel” is its top priority:

Spreading the Gospel should be our top priority.

A theobro on the state of the Southern Baptist Church:

How many people worship at a Southern Baptist Church on a given Sunday? The numbers are going down.

2019 — 5.2 million
2022 — 3.8 million

How many baptisms?

2019 — 235,748

The POTUS as a “minister of God.” (But remember, the Christian Right often tells us, we are choosing a president, not a pastor):

Sean also has a beef with Russell Moore and David French:

And Sean uses the tragedy in Hawaii to take a shot at Biden (with a great response from Yethalee):

Sean. Run over there and get a photo of you praying over the banyan tree. You won’t be in the way.

Ryan Helfenbein, the director of Liberty University’s Standing for Freedom Center, gets it right. Yup:

“The gospel is not something partial or piecemeal: it takes in the whole life, the whole of history, the whole world. It tells us about creation and the final judgment and everything in between.”

This was an especially interesting Evangelical Roundup (Aug. 14,23). I don’t go on Twitter so I appreciate the repeat of some of the dialogue from there. I chuckled a bit. Beth Moore’s comment all up used a southern phrase, “God love you, Honey,” in her response to Tom Buck.

I am an Evangelical Christian, so my thought responses varied to the content. I fell gratitude Gratitude for an Evangelical Organization that participated in Iran’s conference.

    Thank you.

Thanks Susan. I do these roundups for several reasons:

    1. Folks like you who are not on Twitter can see what is going on.
    2. I am writing a three volumes on evangelicals and politics in the 21st century and these roundups will help me go back and write the third book.
    3. I am trying to offer a service to people who observe evangelicalism.

You may notice that I work hard to show the complexity of evangelical Christian. You will always find what I see as the good dimensions of evangelicalism above the “Blast from the Past” video.

Thanks again for reading and supporting CURRENT!
