Mike Pence was the first 2024 GOP presidential candidate to speak at the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s “Road to Majority” conference this weekend. Pence’s walkout music was Kid Rock’s “Born Free.” The applause was sparse.

After listening to this speech it is clear that Pence’s appeal to evangelical voters will center on:
- His conversion experience in the 1970s at an evangelical Christian music festival at Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky. In this speech he delivers on all the right evangelical talking points. He quotes John 3:16. He tells the story of how he went forward at an altar call. He says he accepted “Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and savior and my life has never been the same.” Pence wants the audience to know that he is one of them.
- How Joe Biden and the “radical left” have “weakened this country at home and abroad.” Biden has given us: “a crisis at the border,” high inflation, crime in major cities, a rising national debt, the “disastrous” withdrawal from Afghanistan; “radical ideologies” in school classrooms where students are taught to “hate our history”; and woke corporations who “punish” consumers in the name of “left-wing social justice.”
- Advancing his understanding of American “freedom” defined by lower taxes, limited spending, “compassionate” reforms to the “entitlement and welfare state,” the achievement of American energy independence, the end political partisanship in the Department of Justice, school choice, the banning of transgender surgery for kids under the age of 18, and the defense of religious liberty (here he takes a shot at the LA Dodgers for their “anti-Catholic bigotry and hate”).
- Abortion. Pence notes that the Road to Majority conference is taking place one year after the Roe v. Wade reversal. According to Pence, this is “God’s timing.” Pence connects his pro-life convictions to his evangelical conversion. He quotes Psalm 139: 13 and reminds the audience that as vice-president he “played a small role” in getting the three Supreme Court justices nominated who would eventually overturn Roe. Here is his takeaway line: “The call of life is the calling of our time and we must not rest and we must not relent until we restore the sanctity of life to the center of American law in every state in this country.” He calls upon his fellow GOP candidates to support a national ban on abortion before 15 weeks “as a minimum nationwide standard.”

Pence is clearly the most evangelical candidate of the GOP bunch and he will likely get some support among conservative evangelicals who do not go to the events like the Road to Majority conference. But his brand of evangelical politics sounds too much like the evangelical politics of the George W. Bush days. That era of evangelical politics is long gone. It no longer has the power to lift a candidate out of a GOP primary.
