What happened on day 1 of the 2023 Southern Baptist Convention’s annual meeting?

John Fea   |  June 13, 2023

Some of the best religion reporters in the business are in New Orleans this week. Here is what they have to say about what happened on the first day of the meeting. These tweets are (roughly) in chronological order (morning to evening).

There are a lot of Baptists here. The SNC annual meeting is getting started pic.twitter.com/6DMqyi1iQJ

lots of singing this morning pic.twitter.com/zLJGJVDfH9

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

It's not even 8 am, and we're sounding the trumpets at the first day of the Southern Baptist annual meeting. #SBC23 pic.twitter.com/gcpA20ZFyT

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

This morning's bulletin is the first time we're seeing the resolutions going before #SBC23. Topics include: replanting, care for pastors, AI, immigration, women, church offices, gender transitions, conscience rights.

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

And we're off at the SBC meeting.

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

The annual meeting comes to order with the banging of the Bunyan gavel, made of wood from the jail where John Bunyan was imprisoned. (And not a gavel owned by slaveholders! https://t.co/HlBSh3g2hf) #SBC23

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

I have a good seat.

SBC president @bartbarber welcomes the messengers. #SBC23 pic.twitter.com/W2ANqh2LrB

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

Registration secretary update: 11,720 messengers have checked in here in New Orleans. #SBC23

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

President Bart Barber tells messengers they will need their a Bible, ballot, and maybe a stress ball. So far there are 11,720 messengers registered pic.twitter.com/37tV3tujFQ

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

And now we have motions

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

Wasting no time! We're already at motions for new business. Just motions right now, no discussion. #SBC23

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

There's also a motion to overrule the resolutions committee and bring out a resolution on the abolition of abortion.

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

Now a motion to give ERLC the ministry assignment to deal with abuse.

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

And a motion to bar trustees from running for president of SBC entities.

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

Cheers and whistles for a motion to release security footage show the interactions between 2022 presidential Mike Stone and ā€œa certain abuse survivorā€ in Nashville by noon today.

Stone is running for president again, and the messenger alleges he has been slandered. #SBC23

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

Now there's a motion to release security footage from the Nashville convention—regarding on incident involving Mike Stone and an abuse survivor.

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

Now a resolution to make the SBC entities fill out a 990 and provide that information to the public – but not to file that 990 with the SBC. (They are not required to do so at this point.)

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

Now there's a motion to investigate churches that have LGBT ministries for being out of friendly cooperation.

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

Just FYI– this is the tweet that the motion referred to. https://t.co/r0oOyyQWYf

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

We have our first woman speaking from the floor.

She files a motion taking issue with Southeastern's handing of Tom and Jennifer Buck's allegations. She runs out the final minutes of the new motion time describing the issue. #SBC23

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

Convention offers a standing ovation for the Metro Nashville police chaplain, a Southern Baptist, who was involved in the response to the Nashville shooting. #SBC23

Accessibility note: In one section of the meeting hall, there's a sign language interpreter and a screen with closed captions. #SBC23 pic.twitter.com/IqKZYGNm5b

For context: "More than $1.5M was spent on the on-campus presidential home, including renovations and furnishings. That included an espresso machine costing more than $11,000, about $60,000 for Christmas decorations and more than $25,000 for artwork." https://t.co/Gx0nmJTGiy

Baptists are the biggest Protestant group in Ukraine. The leaders of SBC missions and relief efforts are discussing deepening partnership and support for churches in the region—120 projects impacting 1.5 million people. #SBC23

The IMB president is wearing a custom baseball jersey pic.twitter.com/62lpcVrRdV

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

Paul Chitwood just took a shot at Samaritan's Purse shoeboxes and other mission groups that spent "more on marketing" than missions.

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

Paul Chitwood, head of the @IMB_SBC asks for more money to send more missionaries. Takes a shot at non-Baptist agencies– and the Samaritan's Purse shoeboxes– for spending too much on marketing,

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

Paul Chitwood refers to the SBC's international missions force as "the home team."

Just a baseball metaphor (messengers also given IMB pennants), but it used to be that the North American Mission Board was the "Home Mission Board" and IMB was the "Foreign Mission Board." #SBC23 https://t.co/LOaZsRvCdX

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

And we get a vaccine-related question for Chitwood.

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

Paul Chitwood says that SBC missionaries have been vaccinated for decades. "We did bury missionaries due to COVID."

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

Messenger asks if IMB's Paul Chitwood wants to apologize for requiring missionaries to receive the COVID-19 vaccine—and pay for any long-term effects (myocarditis).

He says vaccination allowed IMB to remain in countries where it was required. #SBC23 https://t.co/SLamWzdc5M

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

Chitwood: "Missionaries have to have their eyes on their work to report it" and recent audits by IMB staff have confirmed it. https://t.co/s4sc1r8zj0

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

Many Southern Baptists tell me this is their favorite part of the whole annual meeting—when they commission and send missionaries.

Each introduce themselves, describe their call, and ask for prayer. #SBC23 pic.twitter.com/Nm476o9a3E

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

Now a bunch of new missionaries are telling their stories. This really is a big thing for the SBC– it's where most of the $$ goes. Lots of women speaking during this presentation.

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

interesting that Poland — one of the most religious nations in Europe– is getting a couple of missionaries.

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

"God has called us and two of our five children" … Obviously this couple is having their adult/grown children join them, but it sounds like "Our toddler has rejected God's call and we're leaving him behind."

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

They don't show the faces of missionaries moving to closed countries or places where there are security risks. A majority of these faceless couples are bound for Asia and the Middle East but also Europe and the Americas. #SBC23

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

IMB offers prayers in five languages, including sign, for the missionaries being sent out. #SBC23

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

This song haunts my life. pic.twitter.com/vKbjMltgkc

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

"I'm complementarian but I ain't stupid," SBC president @bartbarber, in telling messengers that he will cut his sermon short in order to go to lunch with his wife.

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

"Sometimes, God's peace giving presence can be hard to find in the midst of our fellowship," @bartbarber

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

"Coffee is bitter water, for bitter people, facing bitter times," said @bartbarber, drawing a laugh during the SBC meeting. "I think I just lost the election." he added with a smile.

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

Barber introduces the theme of his address: aesthetics.
"Your aesthetic is what drives you to dwell on one thing versus another. And God is calling us to dwell on the right things," Barber said. #SBC23

— Liam Adams (@liamsadams) June 13, 2023

"This world is full of speech and action that strip the dignity and honor from people. We should not have
a taste for that." @bartbarber

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

Barber talks about purity culture and how it's important because it's not just about sexual abstinence but also an opposition to pornography. #SBC23

— Liam Adams (@liamsadams) June 13, 2023

Barber also responded to criticism from those in the SBC (opposition conservatives) for being a "company man" who gives/praises giving to the Cooperative Program budget.
"Why do we get mad when people commend the good in our family of churches?" Barber said. #SBC23

— Liam Adams (@liamsadams) June 13, 2023

"God's trying to accomplish something far more fundamentally important than spin control and public relations." @bartbarber

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

In a story that is locally rooted and addresses issues of racial discrimination and poverty, Barber talks about Louis Armstrong.
"What is most remarkable…is he saw the beauty in us despite how he treated," Barber said. #SBC23

— Liam Adams (@liamsadams) June 13, 2023

Discussing the churches appealing their ouster this afternoon (Saddleback, Fern Creek and Freedom Church), Barber said, "Any time our convention parts way with our churches, let us not applaud." #SBC23

— Liam Adams (@liamsadams) June 13, 2023

"It doesn’t matter if naysayers call you a 'company man.' Yes, have the courage to call a spade a spade. But also have the courage to call a masterpiece God’s masterpiece," Barber said in closing. "There’s so much beauty around us. Keep looking, Southern Baptists. Keep looking."

— Liam Adams (@liamsadams) June 13, 2023

Sermon has some references to SBC business, including disfellowshipping:

"If we must part company with churches who were once a part of us, let us not be those who applaud and revel in it. Rather, let us be those who are unafraid to say what is beautiful about those churches." https://t.co/luNvHXs54l

From SEBTS president @DannyAkin on the disfellowshipping of churches over female pastors: ā€œFor me, we didn’t leave Saddleback. Saddleback has left us.ā€ @baptist21 #SBC23

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

JD's the first to say exactly what I'm hearing from women: ā€œThere’s a lot of discouragement there because they’ve been turned into a battleground.ā€

ā€œWe’re focused on the qualified men part, the men part, but then there’s the whole *qualified* part.ā€ #SBC23

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

Another point: @jdgreear is worried that beyond nomenclature of women called pastors, some leaders are raising concerns around women, regardless of title, who perform "pastoral duties." So who determines what those are and whether they are inappropriate? #SBC21

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

Southern Seminary's @albertmohler worries about turning the SBC into an investigative body and adding more oversight when it's already got so much work to do.

"If the SBC dies soon, it may die of task forces." @baptist21 #SBC23

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

Last night's @9Marks event had a panel in consensus in favor of the amendment re: female pastors. This @baptist21 panel has some disagreement, with Mohler saying he's favor and Greear saying he's opposed. #SBC23

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

It's a pretty Bart Barber-friendly crowd at @baptist21, with fellow Texas pastor Jarrett Stephens—on the panel—saying he'll be the one to nominate Barber before the convention later today. #SBC23

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

There's been over 600 phone calls to the sexual abuse hotline, involving over 300 open cases in SBC churches, per an update from task force member @jarrettstephens.

ā€œThere is a lot of work to do, and we are just beginning.ā€ @baptist21 #SBC23

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

Southern Baptists at 445 ET today will vote on appeals by Rick Warren's Saddleback and Linda Popham (30-year SBC pastor in Kentucky) after they were tossed for having women pastors. This isn't hard data but every insider I've talked with says they will lose and remain OUT #SBC23

— Michelle Boorstein (@mboorstein) June 13, 2023

Southwestern prof Juan Sanchez responds to a question about the reports of financial turmoil at the school: "Southern Baptists deserve to have confidence in their institutions." @baptist21 #SBC21

Walking back into the convention center, people are handing out pamphlets on behalf of Rick Warren’s campaign for Saddleback’s appeal this afternoon. #SBC23 pic.twitter.com/zGBzz4mkqY

— Liam Adams (@liamsadams) June 13, 2023

He describes the financial board—made up of business people and not pastors—who safeguard against financial problems at his own seminary, Southern.

"Something's clearly broken in our (the SBC) governance system, or we wouldn't be having this discussion."

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

Here's the schedule for this afternoon (reminder, "miscellaneous business" is the appeals from the three churches): #SBC23 pic.twitter.com/WEq9mKmLIA

— Liam Adams (@liamsadams) June 13, 2023

The SBC had adopted what they believe to be the first denominational statement regarding ethical use of artificial intelligence—encouraging that it be used in "honest, transparent, and Christlike ways" #SBC23 pic.twitter.com/SnZ6mQcpIQ

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

For the grammar's sake, could someone considering this amendment—"God only calls men to serve in the office of pastor/elder/bishop"—do something about the placement of *only*?

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

So far, everybody's playing nice through the first 6 of 9 resolutions. No substantial disagreement or debate, and only one amended. #SBC23

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

Houston pastor @jarrettstephens nominates @bartbarber for a (customary) second year-long term as SBC president: "As a survivor of sexual abuse, I am grateful for how Bart has led us in the way of sexual abuse reform… he is not owed a second term but he has more than earned it."

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

Willy Rice nominates Georgia pastor Mike Stone, saying, ā€œMike knows the time and he knows what to doā€ and lamenting how ā€œa cancel culture has replaced a gospel culture.ā€ #SBC2023

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

I believe this is the case: https://t.co/47F5Z4zYC5 https://t.co/e18qjUoklC

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

The Barber-Stone presidential vote is happening by written ballot, so we won't know the results right away. Stay tuned while the counting happens. #SBC2023

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

And now the voting has begun for SBC president

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

The first time I've seen a wave break out at an SBC meeting #SBC23 pic.twitter.com/YzmwWbAVbL

And the wave dies pic.twitter.com/eHxpjFeZWN

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

NOW: SBC hears appeals from Saddleback and Fern Creek Baptist Church, who were tossed out in February for having women pastors. LIVE: https://t.co/iz9LJGpmzY

— Michelle Boorstein (@mboorstein) June 13, 2023

The first appeal comes from the female pastor of Fern Creek Baptist: ā€œWe believe that the Bible allows women to serve in the ways that you do not all agree, but we should be able to partner together.ā€ #SBC23 https://t.co/qlLScYuAvJ

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

"I am personally more conservative than most Southern Baptist pastors I know," Popham says.

She says she doesn't agree with the "extreme Calvinists" or those who closed during COVID, but she doesn't want to kick them out. #SBC23 https://t.co/KjqEx6qT7r

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

Round of applause for @albertmohler who is giving the EC's counter-argument to the appeal re: Fern Creek.

"The issue of a woman serving as a pastor is an issue of fundamental biblical authority that violates the doctrine and the order of the Southern Baptist Convention." #SBC23

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

More background on Fern Creek and all the attention on women pastors https://t.co/SPvDNq3nBZ

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

Also, a series of SBC leaders, including Paul Chitwood, who was head of the Kentucky Baptist Convention before going to the IMB, preached at Fern Creek while the church had a woman pastor

Freedom's Donald Stewart is arguing that the pastor who was allegedly abusive (though they say that's not true) has stepped aside and another pastor is leading them now https://t.co/r4ac0AuYcm

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

A Florida church was kicked out of the SBC for calling a pastor with a history of sexual misconduct with women under his care. The pastor resigned but is still a leader. @deaninserra speaks for the the SBC EC and says they are not in friendly cooperation.

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

Dean Inserra, representing the EC, says Freedom's claims are false and that the church did appoint a pastor who had been found through an investigation to have "confirmed and admitted sexual misconduct."

Inserra claims that the church is posturing with the pastor's resignation. https://t.co/wzJh0Sux73

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

Miconduct by a pastor with a church member is increasingly seen as abuse of power. But a number of SBC pastors and leaders disagree. Some more background on this issue. https://t.co/IYuzCBJRK6

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

here goes Warren pic.twitter.com/CbFimnr4oH

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

Rick Warren says: ā€œI am asking you to act like a Southern Baptist, who have historically agreed to disagree, in order to act on a common mission.ā€

Ask that they ā€œtreat egalitarian baptists with the same grace you showed the Calvinists.ā€ #SBC23

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

And the mic is cut on Rick Warren.

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

Warren cites Mohler from 2000, saying the limits in the Baptist Faith & Mission did not apply to assistant pastors. Mohler says Warren is wrong.

SBC messengers reelect Texas pastor Bart Barber to a second term as president https://t.co/0EuhESa550 via @RNS

PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION RESULTS #SBC23 pic.twitter.com/IE8prDz6om

— Liam Adams (@liamsadams) June 13, 2023

Mike Stone loses for the second time in three years. And it's the third time loss in a row for a Conservative Baptist Network candidatehttps://t.co/0EuhESa550

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

Mike Stone ran on his opposition to the current approach to dealing with abuse. Barber supports those reforms and the current approach. https://t.co/0EuhESa550

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

Barber was elected for the first time last year as a folksy Texas pastor who tweets about his cows, who are named for historical SBC figures and who has fought for accountability as a SWBTS trustee.

Here's the story from then: https://t.co/QkctYf1MEi

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

And @PastorMikeStone congratulates @bartbarber https://t.co/vqXgFtPArv

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

A motion from @jrwhitehead to have SBC entities— to essentially have them provide the same information that other charities. It's referred to the Executive Committee.

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

The election of @bartbarber means another year of vidoes of Lottie Mooon and Bully Graham from the ranch in Texas

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

A group of motions are ruled out of order, including a release of security video and to bring out an abortion related resolution. There is an appeal going on.

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

The Mike Stone security footage motion is ruled out of order—there was no way to even consider in the deadline of noon today—but the messenger is appealing the decision and may present a new motion. #SBC23

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

Right now, @bartbarber is show why religion reporters call him to explain SBC polity.

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

It looks like a motion to bring out an abortion-related resolution will be voted on.

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

For this business section, a group of former SBC presidents are waiting to speak and introduce a new motion. #SBC23 pic.twitter.com/jbyQVeKCZ7

— Liam Adams (@liamsadams) June 13, 2023

A long motion to study exactly what women can do in the SBC.

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

New motions again!

First one proposes changing the requirement that SBC churches "closely identify" with the BFM to being "in accordance with." #SBC23

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

If you're keeping track, we have had one motion about increasing abuse response (adding to it ERLC duties) and one about restricting already-approved response (removing website category), and now several resolutions and motions related to pastoral roles and women. #SBC23

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

I'll be curious to see the reaction and discussion around the abuse reform implementation task force because it feels like any momentum the SBC had around abuse is slowing.

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

There have been a couple references to transgender identity, and now a messenger proposes amending the faith statement to address biological gender and gender identity. #SBC23

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

And now a COVID-vaccine related motion– the second on to claim that missionaries were harmed by the vaccine.

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

A former SBC president, @drjamesmerritt, asks for a task force on how to deal with the issue of friendly cooperation. He's standing in front of a group of former SBC presidents. Followed by pastor from Massachusetts asking for the EC to help the SBC get along

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

Former SBC president @drjamesmerritt, surrounded by fellow leaders including @EdLitton, proposes appointing a year-long task force on article 3.1 re: cooperation of churches. #SBC23

(Similar proposal here: https://t.co/cx6LreUF65)

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

This motion is very similar to what pastor Clint Pressley said before #SBC23 he would bring to the floor (šŸ‘‡). But Clint announced this morning he was withdrawing that motion. https://t.co/w4ReFYDES3

— Liam Adams (@liamsadams) June 13, 2023

And the most popular SBC motion on history— a messenger from Oklahoma wants a future convention to be set in Hawaii. Enormous cheers.

— Bob Smietana (@bobsmietana) June 13, 2023

One of the only women to make a motion from the floor moves to host an SBC annual meeting in Maui, Hawaii, and everyone cheers wildly and waves their yellow ballots. 🌺🌺🌺 #SBC23

— kate shellnutt (@kateshellnutt) June 13, 2023

Next: a major schedule change to move the Abuse Reform Implementation Task Force report until tomorrow morning. #SBC23

— Liam Adams (@liamsadams) June 13, 2023

NEXT: Election of first vice president.
Nominees are Louisiana pastor Gevan Spinney, Oklahoma pastor Dusty Deevers and Louisiana pastor Jay Adkins. #SBC23

— Liam Adams (@liamsadams) June 13, 2023

Votes by written ballot. And that concludes our business for the day. Other events going on tonight. #SBC23

— Liam Adams (@liamsadams) June 13, 2023

Both publicly and behind the scenes, these women have been calling for accountability for years, and I don't think the awareness of the issue now would come about without them. https://t.co/JtcC2qlvCR

Thanks for commenting, Richard. There are dozens of places you can read a couple of paragraphs on the SBC. I do a lot of curating (as opposed to longer form writing) at my blog. I’ve been doing it for over a decade and there is an audience for it. People read posts like this because they want to take a deeper dive into matters. I get it though– it’s not for everyone.
