Evangelical roundup for June 8, 2023

John Fea   |  June 8, 2023

Martin Lloyd Jones and John Stott, circa 1960s

What is happening in Evangelical land:

Deconstructing Molly Worthen’s conversion.

Joel Looper reviews Daniel G. Hummel, The Rise and Fall of Dispensationalism.

Where do Reformed evangelicals go after the death of Tim Keller?

Can evangelicalism be revitalized?:

Is evangelical renewal possible?

More on the death of Elizabeth Sherrill.

A Seattle congregation leaves the Evangelical Covenant Church over LGBTQ issues.

American evangelicals were behind this. Some evangelicals are still behind it:

Rick Warren continues his efforts to get Saddleback Church back into the Southern Baptist Convention. But is he using Adrian Rogers accurately?:

I was a member at Bellevue under Dr. Rogers. I was on staff at Bellevue under Dr. Rogers. I was sent out as a church planter by Bellevue under Dr. Rogers. I wrote my PhD dissertation on Dr. Rogers. I spent time hanging out with Dr. Rogers's in his office at Bellevue. I can tell… https://t.co/pxsjoigoCR

The president of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary is not happy with Warren:

In @ 25 yrs of ministry in the SBC, I've never seen such an energetic, kamikaze mission on our own confession of faith by an erstwhile leading pastor.

It's as remarkable as it is sad. And, for the record, truth AND mission matter to me & virtually every Southern Baptist I know. https://t.co/eLkcdah9Lc

— Jason Keith Allen (@jasonkeithallen) June 7, 2023

For centuries Baptists have been a confessional people-united by truth, motivated by mission.

With love and respect Pastor Warren, please stop misguiding the masses. Just because you've changed your convictions doesn't mean we should compromise ours. https://t.co/IFD7AoMVOs

— Jason Keith Allen (@jasonkeithallen) June 6, 2023

And Tommy Kidd:

Hi, historian here. Can we stop the ahistorical claims about Baptists "originally" being against creeds/confessions?

Creeds and confessions have _always_ been a central part of Baptist life since the 1600s. And yes, their content has often been a matter of debate.

And Ed Stetzer brings some humor:

J.D. Greear weighs-in on the Warren/Saddleback controversy.

Who will Southern Baptists support in the GOP primary in 2024?

Shane on Sean:

Christian means “Christ-like.”
He commanded us not to judge others. He blessed the meek and the merciful. He said we will be known for love. He called religious bigots a “brood of vipers.” He welcomed the excluded and marginalized.

There is nothing Christlike about this, Sean… pic.twitter.com/nXu3b1ijH4

Women pastors in the Christian and Missionary Alliance.

Polish evangelicals gather.

The “room where it happened.” Stay tuned, we will have historian Larry Eskridge on The Way of Improvement Leads Home Podcast soon to place Greg Laurie’s “Jesus Revolution” movie in historical context:

People don’t like evangelicals. Does that hinder the spread of the Gospel?

Beth Moore on “purity culture” and the Shiny Happy People documentary:

Here’s the convoluted part and what I was too tired to get into last night. If any of you have read my memoir, you know the name of it is “all my knotted up life.” Here’s a perfect example of what I mean by my knotted up thinking. Main reason I wasn’t drawn to BG or the Duggar’s?

— Beth Moore (@BethMooreLPM) June 5, 2023

But as I look back, my gut was often (not always!) right but because those who held a more fundamentalist view were what I perceived as godlier, holier, better or more righteous than I and had a FAR better track record, I felt like all they’d bring out in me was more guilt.

the sparkly clean ones who got it right. I was already disqualified. Already done too many stupid things and wasn’t even finished yet. I was part of the Christian immoral minority, not the moral majority. My kind were the Shiny Unhappy People. I mean, incest seeped through the

The unhealthy part of me truly believed the main reason I was creeped out by those circles was well-earned shame. At the same time, a healthier part of me reacted with the hair standing up on the back of my neck. I’d seen churchy hypocrisy close up. I’d seen it used as a cover.

were my realities. The boundaries around my life were mown down so early that it would take years and a long steady act of God to rebuild them.

OK, I need to get ready for work but I want to point out one last thing first. I didn’t realize how much influence that whole Gothard

— Beth Moore (@BethMooreLPM) June 5, 2023

Amanda and Melissa never did. Lol. And I wasn’t a very effective enforcer.

I truly wish we were all at a Townhall right now talking about this stuff. It’s so convoluted, isn’t it??? Because, here is the thing. I believe in Jesus Christ, the light of the world. I believe sin

— Beth Moore (@BethMooreLPM) June 5, 2023

Religious fundamentalism that holds girls & women responsible for protecting the boys & men from sin is a shelter for predators of the worst kind. It is inevitably criminal & an insult to true religion & to the name of Jesus Christ, Lord and Savior, with whom children were SAFE.

Blast from the past:

“Your vote could change the nation“–says every conservative evangelical during every election year.

Christian nationalism in Canada.

Par for the course for David and Tim Barton. This is NOT true about the founders’ understanding of the First Amendment.

Christian nationalist pseudo-historians David and Tim Barton assert that First Amendment's freedom of religion provision only applies to those who "worship the God of the Bible." pic.twitter.com/yVdIzw8sVf

Christian nationalism in Wyoming.

The “better angels” campaign?:

Mike Pence is officially running for president. I’m calling his presidential run the, “Better Angels” campaign. EXCELLENT kickoff video. Note: not one shot of Trump and him together and then this line: “Our party and our country need a leader that will appeal, as Lincoln said, to… pic.twitter.com/G1IVFmORFg

— David Brody (@DBrodyReports) June 7, 2023

Another sexual assault case in the Southern Baptist congregation.

Ted Cruz opposes the Ugandan law criminalizing homosexuality with the death penalty. Tom Ascol supports it:

I don’t know all the details of this controversy, but the fact that Karen Swallow Prior says that Tom Buck is “abusive” and a “bully” and she is “literally afraid” of him is revealing and squares with what I have seen of Buck on Twitter. Watch (the “abuse” and “bully” line comes in the first minute of the second video posted below):

One of the biggest lies told by @KSPrior was that we asked her to shop @jenniferbuck65’s rough draft around to get it published. This video shows we never asked her that and that Karen introduced the idea of a publisher to Jennifer. The second biggest lie is that KSP sent it to… pic.twitter.com/JtDlsav80i

Most of what you see in this video has not been made public until now. We do so, because @SEBTS told us to.

Some of what you will see in this video is:

1) @kswhitfield’s actions during the time that @JenniferBuck65’s rough draft was released to news outlets. It includes Keith… pic.twitter.com/f28zLsAxga

When the Standing for Freedom Center at Liberty University needs some expertise on the founding fathers they bring in this guy to talk about George Washington:

What would the Founding Fathers think of modern-day pastors? pic.twitter.com/bB9imqNzVg

Communism is coming?:

Or is it?:

“It’s the only country that’s not just a country,” Adams explains. “It’s an idea, an ideal, a value system. America is about individualism, not collectivism. God, not government. Faith, not secularism.” @NickAdamsinUSA https://t.co/TAGaasdOvB

— Standing for Freedom Center (@freedomcenterlu) April 14, 2020

I think Jack Hibbs is referencing Pride Month with these tweets. Also, what is the relationship between PRIDE and being a celebrity pastor?:

PRIDE leads to conflict. – Proverbs 13:10

— Jack Hibbs (@RealJackHibbs) June 4, 2023

PRIDE ends in humiliation. – Proverbs 29:23

— Jack Hibbs (@RealJackHibbs) June 4, 2023

Tony Perkins is happy to see Pence enter the race. Of course the more candidates who enter the GOP primary the better chance Trump has of winning the nomination. Is this what Perkins wants?:

Good to see another GOP candidate enter the 2024 presidential race who has faith in God and hope for America. Thank you for running, @mike_pence. https://t.co/bS5HiF0j1j

— Tony Perkins (@tperkins) June 7, 2023

Franklin feels betrayed by capitalism:

With more companies & brands pandering to the radical left & becoming hostile toward Biblical values, it’s refreshing to see someone willing to speak up & take action. NBA player @JJudahIsaac takes a bold stand for his faith & is launching an anti-woke brand called UNITUS. I hope…

Nathan Finn takes the bait on the “right or wrong side of history” debate.

Albert Mohler is upset about Uber drivers getting 5 ratings.
