The shooting today at a Nashville Christian school: Some early responses

John Fea   |  March 27, 2023

The Covenant School is an elementary school affiliated with Covenant Presbyterian Church, a congregation in the Presbyterian Church in America. (Since the shooting this morning, Covenant Presbyterian Church appears to have taken down its website.) The school is a member of the Independent Schools of the Nashville Area and the Southern Association of Independent Schools.

The shooter was identified as Audrey Hale. The 28-year-old Hale is a former student at the school and, according to Nashville Police Chief John Drake, identified as transgender.

Nashville’s police chief says there was a manifesto and the trans identity of the killer factors in to the motive of the targeted killings. More details forthcoming: pic.twitter.com/QIjhQf3MpY

One of the victims was Hallie Scruggs. She was the 9-year-old daughter of Chad Scruggs, the pastor of Covenant Presbyterian Church

Another victim was Dr. Katherine Koonce, the head of the school. Koonce was a veteran Christian school administrator with a degree from Vanderbilt, Georgia State University, and Trevecca Nazarene. She hasn’t tweeted in a while, but you can get a sense of who she was here and here.

Here are some responses, many from the world of American evangelicalism:

Let’s begin with Andy Ogles, the guy who represents Covenant Presbyterian Church in the United States House of Representatives:

This is the Representative for the district where the Nashville shooting happened today – where two assault rifles were used to massacre 6 people… Guns have become a form of idolatry in America. https://t.co/vOgIthwmXF

— Shane Claiborne (@ShaneClaiborne) March 27, 2023

Here is Daniel Silliman’s reporting at Christianity Today.

Two things are worth mentioning about the following tweet. The first is a question: Will this shooting lead Marsha Blackburn to do anything about gun control? Second, there was some confusion about the denomination of Covenant Presbyterian Church. This tweeter is correct. The church is a member of the Presbyterian Church in America:

Come on, @washingtonpost, let's get this right: the school is associated with the Presbyterian Church in America, a much more conservative denomination than the older Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (which is also has more than twice the membership of the PCA. pic.twitter.com/xmXiLokw3E

Here is the entire Blackburn tweet:

Chuck & I are heartbroken to hear about the shooting at Covenant School in Nashville.

My office is in contact with federal, state, & local officials, & we stand ready to assist.

Thank you to the first responders working on site. Please join us in prayer for those affected.

— Sen. Marsha Blackburn (@MarshaBlackburn) March 27, 2023

By the way, Blackburn’s previous tweet was about gas stoves:

And the left marches on, one state at a timehttps://t.co/qvnf7UnWEy

Walter Kim, the president of the National Association of Evangelicals, was a Presbyterian Church in America pastor:

Another school shooting with beautiful lives lost. We grieve with the #CovenantSchool community, and ask that God would be near to those who mourn. We also pray for God's help to address gun violence. #Nashville

— National Association of Evangelicals (@NAEvangelicals) March 27, 2023

Joe Biden:

Franklin Graham asks for prayers:

As Nashville, Tennessee, grieves the loss of three children and three adults after a shooting at a private Christian school, #RRTchaplains are deploying to share God's love with this hurting community.

Would you pray for those affected by this tragedy?https://t.co/JNzapBkH6L

David French, who I believe attends a Presbyterian Church in America in the Nashville area:

Horrifying. Evil. The church and school are not far from me. I've been there multiple times. May God comfort the victims and their families. https://t.co/pHXxuTVBV0

Barack Obama. The women seen in this tweet was at the Highland Park, Illinois last summer:

We are failing our children. Guns are now the leading cause of death for children in the U.S.

Michelle and I mourn with the students and families of the Covenant School today. pic.twitter.com/8X9qKKzB9d

Here is the evangelical MAGA crowd:

William Wolfe is a graduate of a Presbyterian Church in America college:

It sure seems “really important” to Charlie:

UPDATE: USA Today corrects the record, says Nashville Police misgendered the Nashville school shooter, because that's what's really important. https://t.co/smRGSva7jt pic.twitter.com/FkVdl5LIJR

— Charlie Kirk (@charliekirk11) March 27, 2023

NYT: "A heavily armed WOMAN entered a Christian school in Nashville on Monday morning & fatally shot three 9-year-old children and three staff members before SHE was shot and killed by the police"

Suddenly, there's no interest from MSM in honoring someone's "preferred pronouns."

— Charlie Kirk (@charliekirk11) March 27, 2023

Instead of banning "assault rifles" we should ban gender affirming care for kids.

— Charlie Kirk (@charliekirk11) March 27, 2023

Sean Feucht is all over this story. (Former Pennsylvania gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano retweeted this Feucht tweet):

The demonic spirit behind the transgenderism movement is being exposed.

Only God can bring freedom.
Only God can bring healing.

— Sean Feucht (@seanfeucht) March 27, 2023

Huck is worried about making this a “political issue”:

Hard to imagine the pain and grief of the families. Sadly, some will make this a political issue before the names of the victims or the shooter or a motive is even known. https://t.co/X110dGpuEl

— Gov. Mike Huckabee (@GovMikeHuckabee) March 27, 2023

We’ll try to stay on top of this.
