Evangelical roundup for March 27, 2023

John Fea   |  March 27, 2023

Oral Roberts and Elvis

What is happening in Evangelical land?

Russell Moore on a potential Trump indictment in the Donald Trump-Stormy Daniels hush money case in New York:

If I were on a jury in this case, I would have a moral obligation to put aside the reality that (as I’ve said repeatedly for the last seven years) I don’t believe Donald Trump is fit for office. Instead, I would have to look at whether the hush money was actually paid and concealed; whether that is, in fact, a crime; whether the intent was to commit a crime; and every other consideration that goes into an impartial judging of the case.

Jimmy Carter and defining evangelicals

Evangelicals and the global church: “The face of Christianity is undergoing a fundamental transformation.”

Christian writer and teacher Karen Swallow Prior is leaving Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. She responds to theobro trolling:

Honestly, most of the time I just feel embarrassed and sad for these men.

They don’t even know how they tell on themselves, and no one in their lives cares enough or is skilled enough to guide them. Or they are being exploited by grifters.

This is the real masculinity crisis.

— Karen Swallow Prior (Notorious KSP at The Priory) (@KSPrior) March 22, 2023

Trump’s indictment won’t matter to most conservative evangelicals. Many will still vote for him 2024.

Defending Oprah:

Many of you understand when I say: If God is white, then goodness, nobility, trustworthiness and leadership are normatively white.

Well, if God has gonads, then goodness, nobility, trustworthiness, power, leadership are normatively male. Genesis 1:27 thinks not.…

Is Donald Trump “on the wrong side of the Religious Right?” Some good reporting in Tim Alberta’s piece, but I think he places too much emphasis on Trump’s comments on pro-lifers in the wake of the 2022 midterms.

The donut church is opening in Chicagoland.

Beth Moore is killing copperheads. Go for the head!

Sister Eves, there’s snakes in this world. Don’t fool around. Go straight for their heads.

DC Talk’s drummer and Mercy Me’s sound man die.

Samaritan’s Purse heads to Mississippi and Alabama.

Blast from the past:

Ugandan evangelicals and anti-LGBTQ laws.

Mark Robinson: North Carolina’s conservative evangelical lieutenant governor.

Netanyahu assures evangelicals that evangelical missionaries will not get prison time for sharing their faith in Israel.

Al Mohler re-ups his attack on David French:

Once again, “The Parable of David French.” This is how conservatism dies. https://t.co/fAYEI87QyR

Franklin Graham finds common ground with atheist Richard Dawkins. Here is Graham on his FB page:

I usually don’t take sides with an atheist—but on this issue, I agree 100%. Richard Dawkins said the push by LGBTQ activists to discredit the reality of two biological sexes is “utter nonsense.” They’re even trying to “de-gender” our language. Richard told Piers Morgan Uncensored, “there are two sexes, and that’s all there is to it.” They also talked about how our woke culture is bullying people who are bold enough to stand with the scientific fact of two sexes. Of course, science reflects what the Bible clearly says, “God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them” (Genesis 1:27). Period. That’s it. I appreciate him taking a stand for this truth, and I hope you will join me in praying that like the Apostle Paul on the road to Damascus, Richard Dawkins’ eyes will be opened to the truth of the Gospel and God’s love for him.

Carl Trueman criticizes Wellesley College’s decision to allow women who identify as men and nonbinary students.

William Wolfe speaks for the Liberty University Standing for Freedom Center. Whatever one thinks bout transgenderism, for the sake of these roundups it’s good to know that Wolfe is a mouthpiece for the conservative evangelical university in Lynchburg.

It looks like Liberty University’s Standing for Freedom Center has a constitutional scholar on its staff:

I wonder how many Liberty University students listen to Phil Vischer’s Holy Post podcast. I am guessing A LOT:

This is the kind of binary thinking and anti-intellectualism that comes out of Liberty University’s Standing for Freedom Center:

John Hagee’s “pro-Israel machine.”

More reporting on the fate of The Kings College from the right-wing Daily Signal.

Can prayer regrow toes?

Owen wants to “seek the truth in love”:

Ranking worship songs.

David French drives the evangelical MAGA crowd nuts:

All right, I will let this go after this. But it is also extremely telling that French will go to great lengths to defend drag performances (which are by nature sexual fetish) as free speech but will minimize & explain away actual gov’t censorship by proxy on social media. https://t.co/LwCdGMD8eO

— Megan Basham (@megbasham) March 25, 2023

Interesting take from the president of the Southern Baptist Convention:

Because of what I believe to be the meaning of “husband of one wife,” I would not feel free to remarry if my wife were to pass away before I did. https://t.co/XOjEZmrdCR

Chick-fil-A is expanding and Focus on the Family loves it.

Wilson County, Tennessee sues Greg Locke’s church for “excessive noise.”

Lance prays in tongues to protect Trump. Biden gets no prayers.

MAGA cultist Lance Wallnau and thousands of right-wing Christians pray in tongues to protect Trump from arrest, as well as from "every witchcraft curse, vex, spell that has been launched against him." pic.twitter.com/WgzTkLdzqB

Lance is getting nervous about 2024:

CAN WE WIN?
I’m seriously concerned about Maricopa AZ, and Philadelphia PA, and Maddison WIS, and Fulton GA. The Dems have rigged the path to the Presidency. I don’t think we will ever have a path again to the White House unless this is fixed!

Early bloggers affiliated with The Gospel Coalition.

“Live animals” and “incredible visuals”:

Only two weeks away from our Easter production đź’Ş We will have multiple opportunities for you and your family to join us for "Easter: The Live Experience," with live animals, inspiring music and incredible visuals. Everyone is welcome to come to this free event! pic.twitter.com/Erm7vNq5qg

How long will the Christian Right continue to make this argument as people die from gun violence? Apparently guns is one of the “God-given rights” that is now part of the Family Research Council agenda:

92 percent of violent acts are carried out without a gun.

At the end of the day, it’s not the instrument in people’s hands that’s the problem. It’s the condition of the heart. @NEWSMAX https://t.co/HNVjovfhSF

Robert Jeffress hanging out with employees of The Christian Post:

First Things magazine is now platforming Eric Metaxas.

Metaxas and Roger Stone solve all the world’s problems:

Metaxas and Michelle Bachmann on Trump’s potential indictment for sending hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels:

It was “EPIC”:

BREAKING: Trump tells patriotic Americans 'you will be vindicated' in EPIC Texas rally speechhttps://t.co/rK0DsaUxsX
