Evangelical roundup for May 30, 2022

John Fea   |  May 30, 2022

What is happening in Evangelical land?

Shane Claiborne and Doug Pagitt at the NRA prayer breakfast:

More of Shane’s commentary from the NRA meeting:

The police came quicker to kick us out of the NRA prayer meeting than to confront the shooter in Uvalde.

Let that sink in.

Our country is better at protecting the NRA and its guns than our kids.

Southern Baptists release the names of sexual abusers. Coverage here.

Lecrae talks about “deconstructing” one’s Christian faith.

Jim Wallis on guns and Ulvade:

Just debated a US Christian gun proponent on BBC who says Jesus calls us to self defense. He used distortions, distractions, and lies trying to keep the focus off the guns which is where we must keep our focus. Mental health is everywhere & isn’t to blame for massacres-guns are.

— Jim Wallis (@jimwallis) May 28, 2022

This American gun enthusiast has a picture of himself on his church altar under a cross holding his assault rifle. In our debate, he said the Texas shooter had enough time to kill all the kids with hammers, so guns are irrelevant. Anyone heard of a hammer massacre?

— Jim Wallis (@jimwallis) May 28, 2022

Buffalo police said they were “outgunned” by the shooter. We learned today that the Ulvalde Texas shooter’s AR-15 fearfully held off a dozen cops while children were slowly murdered by a Weapon of War that anyone & anytime can buy-even an evil 18 year old kid. We MUST stop this.

Evangelicals on same-sex weddings in the Church of Scotland.

More on the financial crisis facing evangelical seminaries.

Jamie Smith calls for the repeal of the Second Amendment:

We’ve taken too long. Habitualities built up over a 200 year history will not be undone by tweaks on policy and half measures.

We need the collective will to repeal the 2nd Amendment and confiscate guns.

Only Mammon and our idols prevent us from doing so.

Burn them down.

The University of Northwestern, an evangelical college in Roseville, Minnesota, addresses (or doesn’t address) racial inequality.

Samaritan’s Purse is in Ulvade, Texas:

We also have a Mobile Ministry Center on site, & this is a place law enforcement can come for support & prayer. They too have gone through so much. Pray for the people of Uvalde. Would you also pray for our chaplains, that God would use them during this difficult time. pic.twitter.com/A9OtSfYRRg

An evangelical pastor calls for gun control.

On NRA “thoughts and prayers“

An Evangelical Presbyterian congregation turns 200.

The president of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary calls for gun control:

I am a convictional conservative who has voted a straight Republican ticket since I began voting in 1976. Having made that clear, it is time to pass some common sense gun control laws that respect the 2nd amendment & protect our children. In fact, it should have already happened!

— Daniel Akin (@DannyAkin) May 27, 2022

Max Lucado to the Southern Baptist laity: “No one would blame you for walking away from the church”

A pastor’s daughter sues the Southern Baptist Convention and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary after “tortuous abuse” by her father.

Blast from the past:

A Southern Baptist criticizes the denomination’s sexual abuse report.

Trump “Big Lie” lawyer Jenna Ellis on the “woke” Bible:

According to the woke version of the Bible, maybe. https://t.co/guibCKV1Gi

— Jenna Ellis (@JennaEllisEsq) May 29, 2022

The CEO of Bethel Music has resigned.

Trump evangelicals are trying to unseat Oklahoma GOP Senator James Lankford, a rock-solid conservative evangelical:

Lance Wallnau on the Ulvade shooting:

Trump court journalist David Brody:

America is not homophobic. We are “Jesus-phobic.” That’s the REAL problem.

— David Brody (@DBrodyReports) May 29, 2022

More evangelical leaders respond to the Ulvade shooting.

Eric Metaxas and Che Ahn talk about the “global shaking” that will lead to spiritual revival:

Ouch!:

Deeply disappointed in Johnny Hunt's response to SBC report, and struck by parallels to Ravi Zacharias's 12-3-2017 statement. #SBCtoo pic.twitter.com/3PGt9tr82d

— Ruth Malhotra (@RuthMalhotra) May 28, 2022

Tom Buck believes that the SBC survivors “are being used”:

I’ll say it!

The biggest danger to survivors in the SBC are many of the people telling survivors right now that they care for them the most.

Survivors are being used by the current power structure to smear people of the past so they can retain their power in the present.

— Tom Buck (Five Point Buck) (@TomBuck) May 27, 2022

The real problem in the SBC isn’t me, G3, or Josh Buice – It’s the hypocrites still in charge who tell everyone they care about reform while they use survivors to retain their own power. The use of survivors for political gain is the “Pandora’s box” I’ve been talking about.

And a response:

Robert Jeffress invited disgraced seminary president Paige Patterson to speak at this church after Patterson’s name is all over the SBC sexual abuse report released one week ago.

I am thunderstruck. Absolutely inexcusable and enraging. https://t.co/gRd5qMMH1X

— Russell Moore (@drmoore) May 28, 2022

It looks like Sean believes “toxic masculinity” is a good thing:

This is what courage looks like. This is what “toxic masculinity” looks like. We need more of this in America. pic.twitter.com/F848JWrHHn

There’s an NRA ‘prayer’ breakfast? Why haven’t we heard of this blasphemy before now? (I guess no real Christian was willing to confront it… shame on me/us)

J: I was also very surprised to learn this. Are they praying for God to protect their God-given right to own an assault rifle?
