Commonplace Book #213

John Fea   |  April 20, 2022

But we shall never have peace so long as we believe that fascism is an aberration only, or the organization of power only–made by the tyrants and controverted by the Red Army only–we shall never have peace until we see that each of us carries fascism within him or helps to build it every day–like the dark Satanic mills in our minds–fascism is the organization of all the negations–it is the hardening of all those invisible spheres “that were formed in fright.”

Alfred Kazin, Journals, June 17, 1943.

Note: “Dark Satanic mills is from William Blake’s Preface to Milton. “Formed in fright” is from Moby-Dick, chapter 42.
