Evangelical roundup for March 24, 2022

John Fea   |  March 24, 2022

What is happening in Evangelical land?

What is going on at Calvin University?

Two former female employees at Christianity Today talk about the Mark Galli sexual harassment allegations.

Dan Silliman, the Christianity Today reporter who broke the Mark Galli story, talks to Slate.

Eric Metaxas and conservative writer Heather McDonald on “phantom racism.” Metaxas called it a “beautiful term.”

Evangelical jeremiads.

How soccer spread evangelicalism in Brazil.

Mark Galli was right to call out Trump. Mark Galli was wrong for the culture he fostered at Christianity Today. A writer at James Robison’s website The Stream can’t grasp this kind of complexity.

Samaritan’s Purse continues its good work:

This morning, the @SamaritansPurse DC-8 departed North Carolina with 19 tons of cargo which included medical supplies and hygiene kits. This is our 5th airlift in response to the crisis in #Ukraine. Please continue to pray for those we are helping in this region. pic.twitter.com/IZLNvcLzKg

Worcester College in Oxford, England canceled an upcoming Christian conference after student activists complained that pamphlets and speakers advocated for gay conversion therapy.

Blast from the past:

Christianity Today asks: “Why haven’t there been any evangelicals on the Supreme Court?” I addressed this on NPR a few years ago.

The director of Liberty University’s Standing for Freedom Center on critical race theory (or at least what he thinks it is) as a “covert assailant” on the church.

Two anti-woke Southern Baptist conservatives will be nominated for president of the denomination.

The Federalist critiques David French.

Vimeo vs. Daystar Television.

Trump court journalist David Brody on Trump’s chances in 2024:

this also squares with anecdotal evidence I’ve observed from my interactions with Evangelicals. To be clear, if POTUS45 runs in 2024 he’ll still be popular with evangelicals but there is a growing sense that since he left office, he’s slipped SLIGHTLY with evangelicals. Also…

— David Brody (@DBrodyReports) March 21, 2022

he would be running against Biden in a General Election after a disastrous presidency. That will obviously help. Bottom Line: he CAN NOT take evangelicals for granted in a 2024 run. If he does, he’ll lose.

Katy Perry vs. Flame

A megachurch pastor says Putin is the “New Hitler” and “Gog”

Interesting thread on Eric Metaxas’s visit to John Brown University in 2020:

We invited Metaxas to debate David French about whether Christians, in 2020, should vote for Trump. This seemed like a more interesting question than in 2016, given that Trump actually had a record to run on. 2/12

Our office got a lot of feedback from concerned students/alumni about his visit, citing his past comments and apparent assault. I had little issue with his past words (debate and discredit, if you can), but we answered a lot of emails/had a lot of conversations that week. 4/12

— Daniel Bennett (@danielrbenn) March 17, 2022

Metaxas was polite enough at dinner, but I couldn't shake the thought that he was not prepared for robust discussions. E.g., one student asked him his thoughts on that summer's Bostock case, which read SOGI into Title VII. Big case! Metaxas said he wasn't familiar with it. 6/12

— Daniel Bennett (@danielrbenn) March 17, 2022

At another point Metaxas said that if Biden was elected, we may not be able to have conservations or debates like the one we were having that night. Like, seriously. He said this. 8/12

— Daniel Bennett (@danielrbenn) March 17, 2022

This is all to say nothing of Metaxas's words and conduct following the 2020 election, which have been unhinged and completely disconnected from reality. In retrospect, I'm embarrassed to have helped give him a platform at our university. 10/12

— Daniel Bennett (@danielrbenn) March 17, 2022

So, Eric, if you're reading this, we hope you'll consider returning the honorarium we paid you. Your conscience shouldn't be burdened by the damaging work we're doing. You have my email. 12/12

Evangelical pro-family organizations rake in a LOT of money.

The flagship Vineyard congregation (John Wimber’s church in Anaheim) leaves the Vineyard

Brian Houston, pastor of Hillsong Australia, steps down after allegations of sexual misconduct.

Marsha Blackburn, an evangelical U.S. Senator from Tennessee, asked Ketanji Brown Jackson to define the word “woman.” All hell broke loose in conservative Evangelical land:

Whether she realizes it or not, by declaring, ā€œI’m not a biologist,ā€ Ketanji Brown Jackson is tacitly admitting that gender is biological and that biology is both the starting point and ending point in defining what a ā€˜woman’ (or ā€˜female’) is. She knows the truth—as do we all. https://t.co/q2tl9vJxgG

— Darrell B. Harrison* (@D_B_Harrison) March 23, 2022

Here’s why Judge Jackson’s refusal to define ā€œwhat is a womanā€ is disqualifying.

My latest for @newsmax https://t.co/A3XsTiQPkf

— Jenna Ellis (@JennaEllisEsq) March 23, 2022

If you don’t know what a woman is, how can you represent one? Wokism is literally destroying old fashioned identity politics.

— Ryan Helfenbein (@RHelfenbein) March 24, 2022

"Her answers to these questions raise concerns about whether she has been so indoctrinated by progressive ideologies that she has somehow been stripped of a basic understanding of natural law and objective truth." https://t.co/DEbUKtszl0 pic.twitter.com/ym1GBokVYr

— Standing for Freedom Center (@freedomcenterlu) March 23, 2022

Today, Ketanji Brown Jackson couldn’t define what a woman is. She said she’s not a biologist. You don’t have to be a biologist. Definition of a woman: ā€œan adult female human being…. an individual of the sex that produces ova.ā€ This should be disqualifying. #Biology

— David Brody (@DBrodyReports) March 24, 2022

I have no idea what this means:

Consider how many baby boys will never be husbands and baby girls will never have husbands because of the future rulings of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson. THAT is what should cause you to have something in your eye.#ChangetheDirection https://t.co/1QubqxpR6Q
