Evangelical roundup for October 28, 2021

John Fea   |  October 28, 2021

What is happening in Evangelical land?

Carl Trueman talks more about “evangelical elites”:

Evangelical = Republican

An important reminder:

Folks, Liberty University is not representative of all “evangelicalism”. I’ve lived all over the country and reducing evangelicals to Jerry Falwell and Liberty is a gross distortion. Those who peddle this narrative are acting in bad faith. https://t.co/EC8K8wfxIw

— Daniel Strand (@DDFStrand) October 27, 2021

This is also worth considering:

A thing I think about a lot is how much ink was spilled in the mid-2010s on Wheaton College—the “Harvard of evangelicalism”—bc it was presumed it’s thought leaders swayed evangelicalism.

But by the Trump era, the real evangelical bellwether college became clear: Liberty U.

A “Christian worldview”

Actually, today’s Trotskyists are some of the strongest opponents of the 1619 Project and race-based identity politics. Mr. O’Fallon obviously doesn’t “know” their “playbook,” but mentioning Trotsky in a tweet is sure to rally the base.

And then, just like magic, the men that created the first Trotsky-esque entryism groups ten years ago that gradualistically pushed in CRT into evangelicalism will be speaking at conferences with the new entryism groups while pushing out those that…

know their playbook

Evangelical Halloween

These are the people who come to Charlie Kirk events. He will be at a megachurch near you this weekend. Kirk denounces killing people not because it’s wrong, but because such a claim “plays into all their plans”:

Not everyone likes John Hagee.

According to Liberty University, the Atlanta Braves’ appearance in the World Series is some kind of cosmic revenge:

After falling victim to cancel culture, the Atlanta Braves enjoy the ultimate revenge.https://t.co/KNs1bfo4Az

— Standing for Freedom Center (@freedomcenterlu) October 27, 2021

Just to clarify: “Making kids feel bad for being white” and Critical Race Theory are not the same thing:

“Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice denounced critical race theory during an appearance this week on ABC’s ‘The View,’ telling the show’s co-hosts that making ‘white kids feel bad for being white’ is not the way to empower black children.” https://t.co/BcrUpvYwwY

Alan Noble on “belonging to God“

They also thought the New Deal was socialist:

David Brody calls the Build Back Better Agenda, "the most powerful socialist trojan horse yet"@DBrodyReports: “We’re about to be trapped in a vicious cycle of government reliance with this socialist spending package.”https://t.co/i6uWvdjuOi

Evangelicals and the Council for National Policy.

Jack Hibbs just got off a phone call with Mike Pompeo:

An evangelical in the church of England.

Beth Moore talks about leaving the Southern Baptist Convention:

Patriot pastors. Also, Shane makes a cameo at Greg Locke’s church:

Interesting piece here by @Vegastenold @daithaigilbert @AmandaPisetzner @VICE @VICENews about Greg Locke and QAnon evangelicalism, with a little cameo 😉👊. https://t.co/CG7YdTlBMj pic.twitter.com/2qKkNAAJ8q

Reunited and it feels so good:

Glad to be back with my great friend @LouDobbs on his brand new podcast. Details on how to listen coming soon! pic.twitter.com/jrBdYznM0N

Is Jesus the only way?

An evangelical group sues the University of Houston-Clear Lake.

Katherine Hayhoe: Evangelical climate scientist.

Blast from the past:

Apparently “evangelicalism” is falling and “emergent” is rising.

The Holy Post tackles contemporary evangelicalism:

Rachel Held Evans continues to speak to the church.

I tend to side with Gardner here:

I think that religious leaders in the SBC, etc — beginning in late 70s, increasing in intensity over last 5 yrs, continuing today — killed Evangelicalism via their partisan political advocacy, desire for place and power, and hypocrisy & that this poll and others reflect it.

— Steve Gardner (@TheologySteve) October 26, 2021

Owen Strachan calls out another “false teacher.”

I’ve been reading Lance Wallnau for a few years now. He seems pretty anxious:

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. – Philippians 4:6:

— Lance Wallnau (@lancewallnau) October 24, 2021

An ousted VP at the National Religious Broadcasters lands a gig at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Is Charlie Kirk now a PETA supporter?:

People who fund the torture of dogs shouldn't be allowed to make medical decisions about how to raise your kids.

— Charlie Kirk (@charliekirk11) October 25, 2021

More on evangelical fracturing.

Good luck with that Samuel Rodriguez:

I loved tuning into @Global_Awake VOA 2021. This word hit me and I believe it’s the way of the future. “The age of solitary Christianity is officially over.” – @nhclc pic.twitter.com/EPFEMyz2Li

“Crack-smoking, demon-possessed leftists”: A Trump court evangelical runs for Congress.

History is complex, but David Barton only wants you to see one side. First, the letter Barton references in this tweet goes on to say: “[The Bible] contains more of my little Phylosophy than all the Libraries I have Seen; and Such Parts of it as I cannot reconcile to my little Phylosophy I postpone for future Investigation.” In a March 28, 1816 letter to his son, John Adams also said: :”An incarnate God!!! An eternal, self-existent omnipresent omniscient Author of this stupendous Universe suffering on a Cross!!! My Soul starts with horror, at the idea.”

— David Barton (@DavidBartonWB) October 27, 2021

I want to know how David Barton reconciles the Lincoln quote below with his latest performance at a California megachurch:

#truth pic.twitter.com/SdI8gVIr0A

— David Barton (@DavidBartonWB) October 27, 2021

Meanwhile, the Bartons are getting some of their Constitutional history from pro-insurrection congresswoman Lauren Boebert:

Mike Pence is living large.

I agree with Perkin’s commentary here, but I am not sure I understand the message the same way as Tony:

Thanks for having me. Was glad to share about the Lord's instructions to Paul in Acts 18:9. “And the Lord said to Paul one night in a vision, 'Do not be afraid, but go on speaking and do not be silent.'” https://t.co/bubA9CVMcN

— Tony Perkins (@tperkins) October 27, 2021

Again, amen! We must bear witness:

But the following night the Lord stood by him and said, "Be of good cheer, Paul; for as you have testified for Me in Jerusalem, so you must also bear witness at Rome." – Acts 23:11

Be encouraged by the promises of God – He keeps His word!

— Tony Perkins (@tperkins) October 27, 2021

Robert Jeffress is preaching two sermons on Romans 12:2.

Jack Graham is supporting his good friend:

My good friend @SarahHuckabee will soon be governor of Arkansas which makes me very happy for my birth state. https://t.co/KryPobplqx

— Jack Graham (@jackngraham) October 28, 2021

Evangelicals and desire.

Al Mohler gives advice to women:

How Should Young Women Pursue Education and Careers Without Succumbing To The Cultural Imperative Of ‘Career First, Babies Second’? — Dr. Mohler Responds To Letters From Listeners Of The Briefing #TheBriefing https://t.co/E25WhFfJQ4

— Albert Mohler (@albertmohler) October 22, 2021

Ohio Senate candidates debate at an event sponsored by the Center for Christian Virtue American Leadership Forum.

Tim Keller on Christians and the pursuit of power:

Summing Nietzsche: Not truth but power matters, and power goes to those whose followers feel the most ressentiment. If you are part of the outrage machine you are a pawn.

— Timothy Keller (1950-2023) (@timkellernyc) October 27, 2021

Evangelicals loving exvangelicals

Jim Wallis on Sinema and Manchin:

Senators Manchin and Sinema have put political self-interest ahead of the needs of the American public, particularly the poor. They value their careers more than citizens and lack courage, moral imagination, and leadership.

— Jim Wallis (@jimwallis) October 27, 2021

A case for Christian colleges

Owen Strachan on something called “Leftism”:

Leftism is a worldview.

Witness:

–Abortion holocaust (over 60,000,000 babies murdered)

–Desecration of religious liberty

–Norming of pagan sexuality

–Loss of societal borders

–Hostile to free market

–Ballooning of debt & government

Reject this worldview in FULL.
