Evangelical roundup for August 2, 2021

John Fea   |  August 2, 2021

What is going on Evangelicalland?

Critical race theory is dividing evangelicalism.

Are evangelicals woke?

This Reformed Baptist thinks “woke evangelicalism” is an “abomination”:

Woke evangelicalism lacks genuine humility, true contriteness, and reverence for God's Word. As such, it is not acceptable to God. It's worship is morally akin to murder, cheap sacrifice, uncleanness, and idolatry. They have chosen abomination and evil in His sight. pic.twitter.com/amURLqTUxB

Billy Graham’s grandson is out of the hospital.

Evangelicals love Israel

Liberty University’s Standing for Freedom Center suggests that you should reconsider your place of employment if they are requiring a vaccination:

We originally posted this clip in May and warned our audience to start reconsidering where they are employed. ESPN, Disney, and Walmart have now said they will require their employees to be vaccinated and more companies will likely follow. (1) pic.twitter.com/ssvRlOFoUW

So much for Romans 13:

Our government shuttered us once, to the destruction of the livelihoods of millions of Americans. Locking the country down again would cripple us, potentially beyond recovery. Some would argue that that’s exactly the point. Either way, we must not comply.@DanCrenshawTX pic.twitter.com/JmvyY2Y6mG

This Southern Baptist pastor supports Tony Evans:

Had a visitor in my office who wanted me to ask you to probe deeper into the subject of CRT/KRT. You’ve struck a chord with evangelicalism of many stripes with the KRT theme. KRT ought be the centerpiece of evangelical philosophy & practice on race. Pastors want to discuss this.

And then there is this guy:

Just a normal Sunday at Global Vision Bible Church as right-wing pastor Greg Locke literally screams at his congregation "do not get vaccinated" while saying that only "crack-smoking, demon-possessed leftists" think Biden is the legitimate president. pic.twitter.com/humGnQnBoC

This is probably true:

Tho it’s fashionable to deride USA evangelicalism as racist/xenophobic/authoritarian maybe it’d be more fair & accurate to say USA evangelicalism as modern movement often lacks historic Christianity’s tools for effective social engagement.

Do evangelicals need a revival?

Blast from the past:

The South is the hub of the anti-abortion movement.

40% of white evangelicals believe that there is intelligent life beyond earth.

It looks like real Christians live outside the United States :-):

Congratulations @TRSchoenmaker on wining gold in the women’s 200-meter breaststroke! #TokyoOlympics https://t.co/zM0ylVIwhJ

— Franklin Graham (@Franklin_Graham) August 1, 2021

Interesting observation:

Thought: 2nd ed. of Christian Smith’s, Christian America? What Evangelicals Really Want, is needed. The complexities and diversities he found in the year 2000 would be only more so now—and would helpfully inform (transform?) much current scholarship on American evangelicalism.

Vaccination in the “Vegas for evangelicals“

It looks like I am not the only one who has noticed what David Brody is up to these days.

A “Judeo-Christian revolution”:

Ohio Republican Senate candidate Josh Mandel says the U.S. needs "a Judeo-Christian revolution": "We should be instilling God in the classroom, instilling God in the workplace, and in all aspects of society." pic.twitter.com/aBT3o2WkAr

Evangelical political success has led to the decline of white evangelicalism

Evangelicals are crowdfunding

Russell Moore talks about leaving his post with the Southern Baptist Convention with a copy of The Paris Review on his desk:

Well put, Daniel Silliman:

Owen Strachan's story, as told by Owen Strachan, to a sympathetic Daily Wire https://t.co/ox4xrhONVC

Evangelicals go to church:

Evangelicals today are more likely to attend church weekly than at any point in the last 46 years.

And, attendance among Black and Mainline Protestants is very steady.

In 1972, 45% of Catholics attended Mass weekly.
In 2018, 20% of Catholics attended Mass weekly. pic.twitter.com/mXlkboVCMK
