Evangelical roundup for July 26, 2021

John Fea   |  July 26, 2021

What is going on Evangelicalland?:

If you can get behind the paywall, Beth Allison Barr and Kristin Kobes Du Mez were out on the town in Waco and The New Yorker covered it!

Evangelicals making a difference:

Critical race theory as kryptonite.

The attacks on McLean Bible Church pastor David Platt keep coming:

If you want to get a better sense of how extreme and unhinged some of the attacks on @plattdavid of @mcleanbible is, read this 17-page list of grievances. It’s representative of a broader malady in American evangelicalism.https://t.co/HCuWcYDRyg

— Peter Wehner (@Peter_Wehner) July 23, 2021

More on Platt here. What is going on at McLean Bible Church is happening in a lot of other places as well. David French weighs-in here.

Beth Moore and Shane Claiborne on the Platt controversy:

I had the same thought, Beth. If these people think David Platt is radical, just wait until they meet Jesus. https://t.co/XQbuTtDVcH

— Shane Claiborne (@ShaneClaiborne) July 21, 2021

Jim Wallis has some choice words for his fellow evangelicals:

Americans who choose not to get vaccinated are now infecting and killing themselves, families, and neighbors. Their fears & ignorance should be personally spoken to; but their divisive politics rejected, and they should be kept out of schools, jobs, & public transportation.

— Jim Wallis (@jimwallis) July 24, 2021

Republicans are no longer a political party; but rather a cult of a megalomaniac dictator who the military Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff has now compared to the Nazis. Republican lying about the election is killing democracy & their lies about vaccines are killing people.

The guy who co-wrote “Don’t Stop Believin’ has a new song out:

My husband Jonathan's new song "Oh Lord Lead Us" is officially out on all platforms!

Does this also apply to the “culture” of the GOP?:

Are Christians supposed to go along with cultural trends that contradict Scripture and the Christian faith? Absolutely not. The Bible is filled with faith warriors who exemplify holding fast to the faith, even when culture or law demands otherwise.@RepCloudTX pic.twitter.com/gBgROJmgmV

Blast from the past:

Evangelical Francis Collins tells his fellow evangelicals to GET VACCINATED!

This tweet says more about the author than evangelicalism. In his bio he calls himself a “common good conservative.” Apparently evangelicals who do not believe in inerrancy or do not reject identity politics are not part of his “common.” This sounds more like fundamentalism to me:

Evangelicalism is compromised not by explicit disavowals of biblical inerrancy and biblical sufficiency, but by implicit disavowals of both by the infusion of identity politics. We are marching to the culture's beat.

This is how 21st-century Christian institutions liberalize.

A former Christian college president and Trump-lover says no Christian can vote for Biden because he is a “liar,” pro-choice, pro-social justice, a misogynist, and pro-immigration. Oh yeah, let’s not forget about the high lumber prices. Everett Piper says that orthodox Christian affirms the “primary of Christ,” the “priority of scripture,” the “pursuit of truth,” and the “practice of wisdom.” We can argue about his definition of orthodoxy, but most progressive evangelicals I know believe all these things. Based on Piper’s definition, one could easily argue that HE is not a Christian because he supported the lies of Donald Trump and has not shown a whole lot of wisdom in his political engagement. If Piper is right, and “Jesus defines Christianity,” he better read his New Testament more carefully. Maybe he can start with the Sermon on the Mount. But wait– after telling his audience that the Bible , and the Bible alone, is the source of Christianity, he goes on to define Christianity by citing the extra-biblical Apostles and Nicean Creed. What a mess.

Dear woke evangelicals, Please stop calling yourselves Christians if you don’t believe in Christianity https://t.co/yMwkUGn1kI

Ken Starr’s alleged affair.

The Southern Baptist Convention defends DACA and the Dreamers

An evangelical leader asked evangelicals to get vaccinated. Here’s what happened:

Leading Evangelical (in the best sense of the term) Ed Stetzer made an appeal to get vaccinated. Here is a sampling of the negative responses. There were supportive comments as well. This is illustrative of the sad state of affairs and fear among many "people of faith." #COVID19 pic.twitter.com/UDVkyWERjA

Evangelical-Muslim dialogue:

Last week, The World Evangelical Alliance signed a statement of cooperation with the world’s largest Muslim organization.

The WEA called the partnership the product of deep theological dialogue, counter to the academic tendency to downplay truth claims. https://t.co/k8d8lWspMo

The Trump loves continues:

Still believe Joe Biden is the most popular president in US history?

I don’t.#TrumpRallyArizona pic.twitter.com/KLxO5InUMx

Evangelicals making a difference:

Prairie Hill Evangelical Free Church in Eden Prairie is now partnering with Prairie View Elementary (@EPS272) to provide meal bags this fall to kids facing food insecurity.

Don’t show-up at this guy’s church with a mask:

Radical right-wing pastor Greg Locke declares that if anyone in his congregation shows up to church wearing a mask, he'll kick them out. pic.twitter.com/9TUktdr3av

— Right Wing Watch (@RightWingWatch) July 25, 2021

Christian journalist David Brody with some more objective and unbiased reporting:

?? More Anti-Trumpers added to this “bi-partisan” sham committee. Yeah, @RepKinzinger & @Liz_Cheney aren’t biased at all. Got it. This Select Committee should be called the, “Unchecked Committee.” What a farce. At least make a good effort hiding the hypocrisy & agenda. https://t.co/YypqmlBjBv

— David Brody (@DBrodyReports) July 25, 2021

Now it appears that they are calling this “discrimination”:

Republicans push to ban "discrimination" against unvaccinated people https://t.co/AIhn46FWbe

— David Brody (@DBrodyReports) July 25, 2021

I am sure there were a lot of evangelicals in this crowd:

Crowd here in Maricopa is chanting “lock him up” for Fauci

— Jack Posobiec (@JackPosobiec) July 24, 2021

Just one million more!

All we need is 1 million more Christians to wake up and mobilize as a people behind a handful of bartering rams and this war can be won. Our enemy is ignorance. https://t.co/Zw3BkfZTOQ
