Evangelical roundup for July 8, 2021

John Fea   |  July 8, 2021

What is going on in Evangelicalland?

Is evangelicalism an “ethos“?

Do evangelicals have a theology of the church?

A good reminder:

Let’s just put it this way, American evangelicalism has a *big* problem with religious nationalism.

Civil religion is not the faith once delivered to the saints.

Ask an Evangelical!

Latino evangelicals turn toward Trumpism:

Must read by Eli Valentin on Latino/a Evangelical/Pentecostal return to Babylon—to the Trump white nationalism.https://t.co/KLR2IEaNfn

A conservative website doesn’t like that McLean Bible Church pastor David Platt “played the race card.” In other words, this website doesn’t like that Platt addressed the division in his congregation over critical race theory.

A Beeson Divinity School professor thinks the Southern Baptist Convention is now controlled by “elites” who are “woke.”

Conservatives are going hard against the supposed plagiarism of new SBC Ed Litton and his staff:

This is obviously a bigger scandal at Redemption Church and Evangelicalism as a whole than we initially expected.

Ed Litton's Co-Pastor, Taylor Anderson, Also Plagiarized JD Greear in a Romans 12 Sermonhttps://t.co/w5qMQdZB3E

Blast from the past:

British evangelical leader Joel Edwards has died. And here.

Bless your pastor!

What if everyone on the Christian Right put these ideas into practice in all areas of life:

Patrick Henry said, “Liberty necessitates concentration on other matters than mere civil governance. Whatsoever things are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report; and if there by any virtue, and if there be any praise, free men must think on these things.”

— James Robison (@revjamesrobison) July 7, 2021

Robison needs to balance Morris with James Madison in Federalist 10. Read it here and tell me if you agree:

Gov. Morris, who wrote the first draft of the Constitution & was instrumental in its acceptance, said, “The Constitution is not an instrument for government to restrain the people, it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government, lest it come to dominate our lives.”

Ed Stetzer is leaving Christianity Today:

Is there a theological reason for white evangelical racism?

Study: Evangelicals downplay their religious language when working with secular groups.

James Dobson and Robert Jeffress are discussing America’s “Christian founding”:

More stuff on how the Great Awakening “lit the fire” for the American Revolution. I’ve been writing a bit about this.

Was Promise Keepers successful in promoting racial reconciliation?

Theology in the midst of suffering:

A testimony: Evangelical theology (as I have learned it from Augustine, Luther, Calvin, Owen, Edwards, Bavinck) has enabled me to live with joy in the face of pancreatic cancer. So thankful for it (the theology) this morning.

— Timothy Keller (1950-2023) (@timkellernyc) July 6, 2021

Metaxas is still talking election fraud. This one gets crazy–MyPillow-guy-level crazy.

From Trump’s chief spiritual adviser. Hmmm…

Your comeback scares some people… 💪

— Paula White-Cain (@Paula_White) July 6, 2021

Greg Laurie explains revival. He was off to a decent start until he started-in with the nationalism stuff:

Esau McCaulley on race and evangelicalism

Hobby Lobby does this every year.

Lance Wallnau wants evangelicals to go deep:

It is remarkable that we heard Christians fumbling around because they didn’t like Trump’s tone or tweets. Go beneath personality, gender, skin color or looks. Go deeper than following the herd and being controlled by news cycles. pic.twitter.com/SigjOnhSea

— Lance Wallnau (@lancewallnau) July 7, 2021

Charlie Kirk goes on the defensive:

It's not enough to just oppose Critical Race Theory.

Republican governors, legislators, school board members, and parents need to play offense.

Push for the Bible to be taught in schools.

Push for prayer in schools.

Push for pro-America curriculums.

Put Marxists on defense.

— Charlie Kirk (@charliekirk11) July 6, 2021

And follows it up a few tweets later with this:

1 John 3:8

The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.

— Charlie Kirk (@charliekirk11) July 7, 2021

Tennessee senator Marsha Blackburn on critical race theory:

Critical race theory is a state-sponsored form of racism.https://t.co/OfXMebap7w

— Sen. Marsha Blackburn (@MarshaBlackburn) July 7, 2021

Grieving on the 4th of July

Another lawsuit for Liberty University
