Evangelical roundup for June 3, 2021

John Fea   |  June 3, 2021

What is going on in Evangelicalland?

Paige Patterson believes a “lynch mob” is after him.

Russell Moore get a new gig as “Minister in Residence” at a non-Southern Baptist Church that is part of the Acts 29 network. Adelle banks has the story at RNS.

Oh wow. Russell Moore has left the SBC personally, not just professionally. @ImmanuelNash is a great church. Founded by @rayortlund. @BarnabasPiper is on staff there too. This is pretty big news in American Evangelicalism. https://t.co/rnGH6xYCOi

— Alan Cross (@AlanLCross) June 2, 2021

At least one Baptist is not happy about Moore’s new position at a church that endorses the baptism of infants:

It communicates volumes that someone who was a paid employee of the SBC for 20+ years and an entity head for nearly a decade has abandoned a central theological tenet of what it means to be Baptist.

— Tom Buck (@TomBuck) June 2, 2021

Being a Baptist means you believe that credo-baptism is the only way someone can be accepted into membership of a local church.

"Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water… it is prerequisite to the privileges of church membership & to the Lord’s Supper."BFM2000

Young evangelicals are walking away from Israel.

Paul Matzko explains evangelical opposition to critical race theory. Here is the first tweet in his long thread:

Have you heard about the white evangelical backlash against critical race theory? Let me explain.

First, it's important to note that this is just the latest manifestation of a running conflict within American evangelicalism.

— Paul Matzko (@PMatzko) May 29, 2021

Ed Stetzer tells his fellow evangelicals to get the vaccine.

For Darryl Hart, the real progressives are pastors in the Presbyterian Church of America:

You don't think this would have anything to do with the new history of evangelicalism or progressive evangelical (read PCA) pastors, do you? https://t.co/8VvSFeSl8Q

Beware of those LGBTQ flags flying at the US Embassy to the Vatican:

Can you imagine believing that a rainbow flag is the true moral evil of our time? And then using that to excuse Christians for using the Bible to prop up a racist, misogynist, bullying serial liar as God’s chosen one? Behold! This is what passes for intellect in evangelicalism. https://t.co/kp4b666N8p

— Jonathan Merritt (@JonathanMerritt) June 2, 2021

Rob Schenk is still thinking about leaving evangelicalism.

More wisdom from Timothy Keller:

Politics helps to cement cultural changes, but it typically does not lead them.

Scot McKnight’s free course on Jesus.

I think a lot of us are aware of this, which is part of the reason why we voted for him:

I wonder if “Evangelicals for Biden” realize that they helped elect a Critical Race Theorist for President. https://t.co/9d47nT7OaE

Slacktivist has some questions about the “mark of the beast“

Here’s the guy who played Hercules. Not sure what he is talking about or who “they” is:

They know a society of strong men would never have allowed what’s happening right now. That’s why they attacked masculinity first.

— Kevin Sorbo (@ksorbs) June 2, 2021

A multiracial evangelical family navigates a White evangelical world.

Evangelical conspiracy theorist Eric Metaxas continues to call Joe Biden a “fake president” who was “not elected.” Metaxas thinks Trump will be reinstated as president based on his conversations with Mike “MyPillow Guy” Lindell and “constitutional scholar” Jenna Ellis. He says “when you’re told to shut-up, don’t shut-up.”

YouTube just booted Metaxas’s show. He tells his listeners not to get the vaccine and says he will now talk “all the time” about how Biden stole the election. He also saved a turtle and tried to save a sunfish in Ocean City, New Jersey.

One more piece on BJ Thomas.

Today’s blast from the past:

Russell Moore talks about QAnon on CNN

A Baylor professor on LGBTQ issues at his university

Former Trump attorney and Liberty University Standing for Freedom Center former fellow (still listed on the website) Jenna Ellis is not giving-up hope:

We are working on solutions. President Trump will never give up on us—We The People—and neither will I. I told him I will always advocate for him and for our great country. ??

— Jenna Ellis (@JennaEllisEsq) June 2, 2021

Anti-vaxxer Greg Locke is dividing families

Is Lance Wallnau running out of things to cover?

And after Garlow set this 65-year-old man straight about Donald Trump, the man got down on his knees and accepted Jesus as savior. Here is Garlow on FB:

Tonight in a restaurant, the approx 65 year old man was talking quite loud at the next table. It was obvious he was trying to impress the seemingly younger woman with him. He proceeded to say – loudly – that Trump and Netanyahu were terrible and did not care about the homeless and children – and all conservatives didn’t either. He prattled on like this what seemed like forever. I bit my tongue.

Finally we finished our meal. He had reached the “stupid quota” with me. As we were ready to leave, I walked over to him and said, “I could not help but overhear your conversation.” (Duh!) “I just wanted to share with you that I have been with President Trump 7 times and Prime Minister Netanyahu 3 times, and I have found them to be extremely compassionate individuals.” (The loud talking man now had a “deer in the headlight” look.).

I continued – with a smile on my face, and in with a tone of respect and courtesy, “And did you know that President Trump established nearly 9,000 ‘Opportunity Zones’ in inner cities, and brought private (not public money – as the man had also complained about government spending) into the blighted urban areas, and was able to raise the socio-economic levels in so many areas. And, on top of that, this part of the Federal government was run by a San Diegan” (who had moved to TX, then DC). I continued, “Now the last thing we want is a political argument in a restaurant, so it’s okay if you disagree with me.” (At this point, the younger woman was half-way smiling, and dropped her head), “but I thought you might want to know the truth.” He appeared to be speechless. At that exact moment, their food arrived. “Hey, your food is here (me smiling). Have a great meal.” And I was gone. (But I kept calm and talked with a respectful smile on my face.) If this was a date, and he was trying to impress the younger woman, I sure would have liked to have heard the “rest of the story.” But anyway, people are so…interesting!

Franklin remembers the first court evangelical:

Today would have been President John F. Kennedy's birthday. He’s pictured here with my father @BillyGraham in 1962. #Throwback pic.twitter.com/qz6jncKj3n

Julie Roys reports on a 2005 “gang rape” at Liberty University.

In our last roundup we shared this video. Here is a response from a former Willow Creek attendee.
