Who are the people holding us back from full vaccination and where do they live?

John Fea   |  May 19, 2021

According to Dr. Sema Sgaier at The New York Times, they fall into four categories:

Covid Skeptics: They are the least likely to get vaccinated and most believe in some kind of conspiracy theory related to the vaccine. They are strongest in Arkansas, North Dakota, South Carolina, Alabama, and Wyoming. Vermont and Maryland have the fewest number of people in this category.

Cost Anxious: They worry about the time it takes to get vaccinated and the cost of the vaccination (it’s free). They are strongest in Mississippi, West Virginia, and Idaho. Vermont and Massachusetts have the fewest number of people in this category.

System Distrusters: They don’t trust the healthcare system to treat them fairly. Most are people of color. They are strongest in Georgia. Maryland, Michigan, and Louisiana. Vermont, Utah, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, North Dakota, Hawaii, and Minnesota have the fewest number of people in this category.

The Watchful: They are holding-out to see how their friends respond to the vaccine. They are strongest in Delaware, Hawaii, Rhode Island, and Wyoming. Vermont, New Hampshire, and Utah have the fewest number of people in this category.
