Evangelical roundup for April 29, 2021

John Fea   |  April 29, 2021

What is happening in Evangelicalland?

Love your neighbor. Get vaccinated.

You should know about John Stott. He would have been 100 this week.

Beth Allison’s Barr’s The Making of Biblical Womanhood is blowing-up the evangelical internet:

This book #makingbiblicalwomanhood is now available everywhere. It is one of the most talked about podcasts we have released and one of the best books I’ve read this year. Thanks for your brilliance and boldness @bethallisonbarr 💥 so many abuse survivors are saying “thank you!” pic.twitter.com/t0saZRTulM

— Nicole Braddock Bromley (@Nicole_Bromley) April 27, 2021

Well, I never imagined to be higher than NT Wright, ever….#makingbiblicalwomanhood pic.twitter.com/1JUmC1JGHh

— Beth Allison Barr, PhD (@bethallisonbarr) April 26, 2021

I cannot put this down! In my mind I keep saying 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ this explains soooo much. #eyeswideopennow @bethallisonbarr pic.twitter.com/LE4uF9khoY

Not everyone is happy about Beth’s new book:

The Preventing Grace podcast on Beth Barr's The Making of Biblical Womanhood begs the question: Why is C4SO Canon Theologian Scot McKnight pushing it?https://t.co/ENO94wSjI6#ACNA

— WannabeAnglican (@WannabeAnglican) April 27, 2021

Anne and I discuss Beth Allison Barr’s new book, “The Making of Biblical Womanhood,” in which Dr. Barr seeks to deconstruct complementarianism, underscoring the ways that Dr. Barr misrepresents Christian doctrine & twists the scriptures. https://t.co/6Y93i7SGqa

— Matt Kennedy (@lambeth981) April 26, 2021

PS: This is why no one ever should have had to read past the title "A Year of Biblical Womanhood" to know that the book would be a fraud.

And why you know any "pastor" who would say "Try Jesus for 60 days" also understands nothing about conversion (https://t.co/oSIU9dqLk4).

— Dan Phillips (inspired by a largely true story) (@BibChr) April 26, 2021

Today’s blast from the past:

I wonder what Owen Strachan will think about Greg Thornbury’s new book:

Karl Marx is the architect of the movement to destroy Western civilization and, ultimately, Christian influence in the West. He was a deeply evil man, and his ideas have had far more influence than Hitler's.

Marxism is the doctrine of demons. https://t.co/vfC9j3G4RJ

— Owen Strachan (@ostrachan) April 26, 2021

White House press secretary Jen Psaki had a run-in with David Brody of Christian Broadcasting Network. It did not go very well for Brody:

Psaki: Do you think tens of millions of people are concerned about him not meeting with Kevin McCarthy? pic.twitter.com/UmdysVn4e6

— Acyn (@Acyn) April 26, 2021

If you are an Evangelical trying to get your fellow Evangelical’s vaccinated please be careful out there:

How's your Monday going? Mine started with having to file a police report in response to the increasing number of threats I'm getting for encouraging white evangelicals to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

Australia has a Pentecostal prime minister.

This guy from Liberty University’s Standing for Freedom Center apparently does not believe that we can learn anything from “worldly philosophies.” He apparently has no clue that most of Christian theology draws heavily upon pagan philosophers such as Aristotle, Plato, etc.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2@D_B_Harrison pic.twitter.com/IXJnZHHNRm

CNN’s most recent piece on evangelicals and the vaccine is not too different from a previous CNN piece.

Albert Mohler is talking about drag queens:

The Unimaginable Becomes Reality: When a Drag Queen Becomes the Latest Candidate for Ministry in Your Church, You've Completely Abandoned the Christian Tradition #TheBriefing https://t.co/mrILa88Xfr

— Albert Mohler (@albertmohler) April 28, 2021

Evangelicals care about racial reconciliation.

Rene Padilla, RIP

Eric Metaxas and his guest Patrick Coffin attack Pope Francis. “He’s a left-leaning South American Jesuit…He’s a bad Pope.” This guy sounds like John Adams when he said, “If ever any Congregation of Men could merit, eternal Perdition on Earth and Hell…it is the Company of Loiola (Loyala).

They also tell people not to get the vaccine because of fetal tissue and attack Anthony Fauci as an agent of the devil disguised as a “capitalist researcher.” Watch:

Metaxas wants the freedom not to take the vaccine, but he does not want to give private schools the right to teach “cultural Marxism.” (This, of course, assumes that “cultural Marxism is a thing and it is actually being taught in private schools).

Non-denominational Christians are on the rise:

The only Protestant denominational family to increase in size from 2008 to 2020 was non-denominational.

Baptists are down a percentage point, so are Methodists.

This only gives you an idea of relative size.

For everyone 1 Episcopalian, there are ~10 Baptists or 3 Methodists. pic.twitter.com/NV599jaxbH

What are evangelicals saying about Biden’s speech last night?

Biden is doing a lot of good this week. Funding summer lunch programs. Getting folks vaccinated. Sending aid to India. Raising the federal wage to $15…

Abolishing the federal death penalty, raising the refugee ceiling, & freeing Reality Winner would put it over the top!

— Shane Claiborne (@ShaneClaiborne) April 29, 2021

I can’t help clapping when Biden says the Rescue Plan will cut child poverty in half! How many years have many of us fought for that? #JointAddress

— Jim Wallis (@jimwallis) April 29, 2021

Empathy rings through this man. And it is real. Empathy should be bi-partisan. Spread that too. #JointAddress

— Jim Wallis (@jimwallis) April 29, 2021

Imago Dei makes it into the speech: https://t.co/2X2yMnu2hj #joebiden #imagodei

— John Fea (@JohnFea1) April 29, 2021

I am glad God sent Joe Biden into my life tonight Thank you Paula! :-):

I am praying for you tonight… God is sending the right people in your life for His purposes in the name of Jesus! He has covenant connections for your divine destiny- get ready for it! pic.twitter.com/ndEeePElaC

— Paula White-Cain (@Paula_White) April 29, 2021

Gary Bauer shared this Breitbart article and then wrote on his Facebook page: “I’m sure we’ll hear a lot of talk about unity during Biden’s address to the nation tonight. But for all of Biden’s talk, his radical agenda is only creating more division.”

Charlie Kirk really misses Trump:

RT if tonight is making you miss Trump more than ever

— Charlie Kirk (@charliekirk11) April 29, 2021

And this:

Joe Biden mentioned the "threat" of white supremacy & the death of George Floyd before he mentioned the border crisis. Priorities.

— Charlie Kirk (@charliekirk11) April 29, 2021

Jenna Ellis, the Liberty University “Standing for Freedom Center” fellow and former Trump lawyer, believes in truth:

Do you agree that truth exists & is discoverable? A lot of people disagree on everything. So? I’m interested in truth (not anyone else’s opinion) & identifying the True God. I’m interested in true virtue, not virtue signaling. I hope our President would be interested in Truth too

— Jenna Ellis (@JennaEllisEsq) April 29, 2021

She also believes this:

45 >>>>> 46*

*rigged

— Jenna Ellis (@JennaEllisEsq) April 29, 2021

David Brody likes to troll other journalists for what he believes to be their partisanship. OK:

Joe Biden is right when he says, "America is on the move again." The problem is the directional arrow. #BidenAddress pic.twitter.com/YxUWpKRAEo

— David Brody (@DBrodyReports) April 29, 2021

Back to Owen Strachan:

Imagine with me, if you will, a world where the President of the United States of America benevolently informs you that he is now allowing you to go outside.

— Owen Strachan (@ostrachan) April 28, 2021

And then 9 hours later he posts about grace. (Apparently it doesn’t apply to his neighbor who might be susceptible to COVID-19):

What if I told you that many professing Christians today give little attention to the disciplines of grace but give great attention to not being labeled a “fundamentalist”?

— Owen Strachan (@ostrachan) April 29, 2021

Michael Wear is right:

A Republican Party with Senator Scott in it is much better off, much healthier, than a Republican Party without him. And I want two strong, healthy and constructive political parties. But gosh the GOP just can't get there if they can't turn the page from Trump.
