Should I Take a Family Vacation or Go to the Bible in American Life Conference?

John Fea   |  May 30, 2014 2 Comments

The Center for the Study of Religion and American Culture at IUPUI is hosting the “Conference on the Bible in American Life“ from August 6-8 in Indianapolis.   Since I am now working on a history of the American Bible Society I thought it would be a great conference to attend.  Unfortunately, it will be held during the week of my family vacation.

If you are free (and have a budget), I would encourage you to consider going.  Speakers include Matthew Sutton, Jason Bivins, Paul Harvey, Paul Gutjahr, Christopher Cantwell, Arlene Sanchez Walsh, Sylvester Johnson, Mark Noll (plenary address), Linford Fisher, Beth Schweiger, Emerson Powery (my Messiah College colleague!), and Edward Blum.  I also wish I could hear Liana Lupas and Mary Cordato of the American Bible Society (ABS) discuss the history of family Bibles in America.  I am working closely with Mary on my ABS history.

Never thought I'd write a sentence like this, but this conference looks so. dang. tempting. If I can find a way, if I can swing it, I think I just might try and show up for this.
