Martin Luther: Heritic? |
I just ran across this post today and found it very interesting. I am not going to debate whether or not these figures are really evangelicals, but the post does raise some interesting questions about the kind of conversations we have been having here about the definition of “mainstream evangelicalism.”
Andy Gill, a student at Princeton Theological Seminary, lists six Christians who are often claimed by evangelicals but uphold doctrines that would place them on the outside of the evangelicalism championed by the very people who claim them.
C.S. Lewis
Martin Luther
St. Augustine
William Barclay
John Stott
Billy Graham
Find out why here. Is it time for an evangelical magisterium to oust these “heretics?” A bit of an oxymoron, isn’t it?
Be sure to add Dietrich Bonhoeffer in there as well. He's popular among Evangelicals — in part due to the Metaxas piece — but in theology was pretty close to Bultmann!
