I am not surprised. The GOP has been against the humanities for a while now. I suspect it has a lot to do with the fact they cannot control what the humanities are.
There's a case to be made for the NEH, but it's not self-evident. The impression on much of the right is that these are unaccountable clubs dispensing goodies to fellow liberals from the public trough.
Indeed, the humanities establishment attacking Paul Ryan for doing his job rather than defend the NEH as worthy in its own right furthers the impression that the NEH [and the NEA] are politicized tools of the left.
