Claire Potter, the “Tenured Radical,” has posted some things that every graduate student needs to think about, whether he or she is new to grad school or a seasoned veteran. Here are a few of my favorites:
“Don’t fly with ballpoint pens in your luggage.” (This was not actually one of the “Ten Commandments,” but I thought it was very funny).
“Thou shalt have an excellent professional back-up plan.”
“Thou shalt become an excellent colleague.”
“Thou shalt join thy professional organization.”
“Thous shalt use the word discourse sparingly; likewise neoliberalism, and other theoretical catchphrases designed to obscure that thou has not fully thought through thine ideas.”
Thanks, Claire!
