Public Fellows at the ACLS

John Fea   |  April 8, 2011 Leave a Comment

I like this program a lot.  In order to show that people with a Ph.D in the Humanities can being their training and talents to the public sector, the American Council of Learned Societies has started the “Public Fellows” program.  The ACLS will fund eight Ph.Ds to work for government agencies or in the non-profit sector for two years.  They will receive a decent salary with health benefits and have a professional mentor.

The participating agencies are the Association of America Universities, Council on Foundations, Institute for International Education, National Institute for Technology in Liberal Education, New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, and the U.S. Department of State.

Advocates for the humanities have been talking for a long time about the kinds of “transferable skills” that humanities students and scholars can bring to public life.  It is good to see an organization like the ACLS putting their money where there mouth is.
