We made it out to Pittsburgh for the 2011 Jubilee Conference sponsored by the Coalition for Christian Outreach. There are thousands of college students here at the Pittsburgh Convention Center to attend plenary addresses, breakout sessions, and concerts.
Tonight we heard Gabe Lyons, co-author of Unchristian: What a New Generation Really Thinks About Christianity…And Why it Matters. I hope to blog on his talk sometime soon.
Before the plenary, Byron Borger, the owner of Hearts and Minds Bookstore in Dallastown, PA and the official Jubilee bookseller, gave a rousing little talk about the importance of reading good Christian books. He suggested some titles that the college students in attendance might find worthwhile. I should also add that he gave a quick plug for Was America Founded as a Christian Nation: A Historical Introduction. Borger has a VERY impressive array of books here at Jubilee. This is not your average Christian bookstore. The display tables are filled with some wonderful titles in theology, history, politics, sociology, agrarianism, Biblical studies, etc…
(My daughter Allyson, who is with me on the trip, asked me if she could buy one of Byron’s 50% off Bibles. How can a Christian father turn her daughter down when she asks to buy a Bible?)
I also ran into Bob Robinson, an old friend from my days at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. Bob is now working for the Coalition for Christian Outreach and serving as a college pastor at an evangelical Quaker congregation in the Canton, Ohio area. I have appreciated Bob’s support for my work on his blog, Vanguard Church, and really appreciated what he wrote about an hour ago on his Facebook wall: “Im the first person on the planet to get an autographed copy of John Fea’s new book.” Its true. I signed a copy for him tonight at the book exhibit.
Here is a photo of Byron Borger’s display of my books, compliments of Bob Robinson’s Facebook page:
Tomorrow I lead two workshops. The first is on the spiritual dimension of studying history. The second is on the Christian America book.
Any chance you could blog a list of other titles that you thought worth looking at?
Jamie: The book exhibit was loaded with great stuff. Hearts and Minds Bookstore (check out their website and blog) is not your average bookstore. They specialize in Christian books for the thoughtful Christian reader like yourself.
